Human Robot Interface for Assistive Grasping
This work describes a new human-in-the-loop (HitL) assistive grasping system
for individuals with varying levels of physical capabilities. We investigated
the feasibility of using four potential input devices with our assistive
grasping system interface, using able-bodied individuals to define a set of
quantitative metrics that could be used to assess an assistive grasping system.
We then took these measurements and created a generalized benchmark for
evaluating the effectiveness of any arbitrary input device into a HitL grasping
system. The four input devices were a mouse, a speech recognition device, an
assistive switch, and a novel sEMG device developed by our group that was
connected either to the forearm or behind the ear of the subject. These
preliminary results provide insight into how different interface devices
perform for generalized assistive grasping tasks and also highlight the
potential of sEMG based control for severely disabled individuals.Comment: 8 pages, 21 figure
Open World Assistive Grasping Using Laser Selection
Many people with motor disabilities are unable to complete activities of
daily living (ADLs) without assistance. This paper describes a complete robotic
system developed to provide mobile grasping assistance for ADLs. The system is
comprised of a robot arm from a Rethink Robotics Baxter robot mounted to an
assistive mobility device, a control system for that arm, and a user interface
with a variety of access methods for selecting desired objects. The system uses
grasp detection to allow previously unseen objects to be picked up by the
system. The grasp detection algorithms also allow for objects to be grasped in
cluttered environments. We evaluate our system in a number of experiments on a
large variety of objects. Overall, we achieve an object selection success rate
of 88% and a grasp detection success rate of 90% in a non-mobile scenario, and
success rates of 89% and 72% in a mobile scenario
Autonomy Infused Teleoperation with Application to BCI Manipulation
Robot teleoperation systems face a common set of challenges including
latency, low-dimensional user commands, and asymmetric control inputs. User
control with Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) exacerbates these problems
through especially noisy and erratic low-dimensional motion commands due to the
difficulty in decoding neural activity. We introduce a general framework to
address these challenges through a combination of computer vision, user intent
inference, and arbitration between the human input and autonomous control
schemes. Adjustable levels of assistance allow the system to balance the
operator's capabilities and feelings of comfort and control while compensating
for a task's difficulty. We present experimental results demonstrating
significant performance improvement using the shared-control assistance
framework on adapted rehabilitation benchmarks with two subjects implanted with
intracortical brain-computer interfaces controlling a seven degree-of-freedom
robotic manipulator as a prosthetic. Our results further indicate that shared
assistance mitigates perceived user difficulty and even enables successful
performance on previously infeasible tasks. We showcase the extensibility of
our architecture with applications to quality-of-life tasks such as opening a
door, pouring liquids from containers, and manipulation with novel objects in
densely cluttered environments
Overcoming barriers and increasing independence: service robots for elderly and disabled people
This paper discusses the potential for service robots to overcome barriers and increase independence of
elderly and disabled people. It includes a brief overview of the existing uses of service robots by disabled and elderly
people and advances in technology which will make new uses possible and provides suggestions for some of these new
applications. The paper also considers the design and other conditions to be met for user acceptance. It also discusses
the complementarity of assistive service robots and personal assistance and considers the types of applications and
users for which service robots are and are not suitable
A Dynamic Localized Adjustable Force Field Method for Real-time Assistive Non-holonomic Mobile Robotics
Providing an assistive navigation system that augments
rather than usurps user control of a powered wheelchair
represents a significant technical challenge. This paper
evaluates an assistive collision avoidance method for a
powered wheelchair that allows the user to navigate safely
whilst maintaining their overall governance of the platform
motion. The paper shows that by shaping, switching and
adjusting localized potential fields we are able to negotiate
different obstacles by generating a more intuitively natural
trajectory, one that does not deviate significantly from the
operator in the loop desired-trajectory. It can also be seen
that this method does not suffer from the local minima
problem, or narrow corridor and proximity oscillation,
which are common problems that occur when using
potential fields. Furthermore this localized method enables
the robotic platform to pass very close to obstacles, such as
when negotiating a narrow passage or doorway
Suitable task allocation in intelligent systems for assistive environments
The growing need of technological assistance to provide support to
people with special needs demands for systems more and more efficient and with better performances. With this aim, this work tries to advance in a multirobot platform that allows the coordinated control of different agents and other elements in the environment to achieve an autonomous behavior based on the user’s needs or will. Comfort-Centered Design of a Lightweight and Backdrivable Knee Exoskeleton
This paper presents design principles for comfort-centered wearable robots
and their application in a lightweight and backdrivable knee exoskeleton. The
mitigation of discomfort is treated as mechanical design and control issues and
three solutions are proposed in this paper: 1) a new wearable structure
optimizes the strap attachment configuration and suit layout to ameliorate
excessive shear forces of conventional wearable structure design; 2) rolling
knee joint and double-hinge mechanisms reduce the misalignment in the sagittal
and frontal plane, without increasing the mechanical complexity and inertia,
respectively; 3) a low impedance mechanical transmission reduces the reflected
inertia and damping of the actuator to human, thus the exoskeleton is
highly-backdrivable. Kinematic simulations demonstrate that misalignment
between the robot joint and knee joint can be reduced by 74% at maximum knee
flexion. In experiments, the exoskeleton in the unpowered mode exhibits 1.03 Nm
root mean square (RMS) low resistive torque. The torque control experiments

A robot swarm assisting a human fire-fighter
Emergencies in industrial warehouses are a major concern for fire-fighters. The large dimensions, together with the development of dense smoke that drastically reduces visibility, represent major challenges. The GUARDIANS robot swarm is designed to assist fire-fighters in searching a large warehouse. In this paper we discuss the technology developed for a swarm of robots assisting fire-fighters. We explain the swarming algorithms that provide the functionality by which the robots react to and follow humans while no communication is required. Next we discuss the wireless communication system, which is a so-called mobile ad-hoc network. The communication network provides also the means to locate the robots and humans. Thus, the robot swarm is able to provide guidance information to the humans. Together with the fire-fighters we explored how the robot swarm should feed information back to the human fire-fighter.
