    Characterization of the Burst Stabilization Protocol for the RR/RR CICQ Switch

    Input buffered switches with Virtual Output Queueing (VOQ) can be unstable when presented with unbalanced loads. Existing scheduling algorithms, including iSLIP for Input Queued (IQ) switches and Round Robin (RR) for Combined Input and Crossbar Queued (CICQ) switches, exhibit instability for some schedulable loads. We investigate the use of a queue length threshold and bursting mechanism to achieve stability without requiring internal speed-up. An analytical model is developed to prove that the burst stabilization protocol achieves stability and to predict the minimum burst value needed as a function of offered load. The analytical model is shown to have very good agreement with simulation results.     Study of spread spectrum multiple access systems for satellite communications with overlay on current services

    The feasibility of using spread spectrum techniques to provide a low-cost multiple access system for a very large number of low data terminals was investigated. Two applications of spread spectrum technology to very small aperture terminal (VSAT) satellite communication networks are presented. Two spread spectrum multiple access systems which use a form of noncoherent M-ary FSK (MFSK) as the primary modulation are described and the throughput analyzed. The analysis considers such factors as satellite power constraints and adjacent satellite interference. Also considered is the effect of on-board processing on the multiple access efficiency and the feasibility of overlaying low data rate spread spectrum signals on existing satellite traffic as a form of frequency reuse is investigated. The use of chirp is examined for spread spectrum communications. In a chirp communication system, each data bit is converted into one or more up or down sweeps of frequency, which spread the RF energy across a broad range of frequencies. Several different forms of chirp communication systems are considered, and a multiple-chirp coded system is proposed for overlay service. The mutual interference problem is examined in detail and a performance analysis undertaken for the case of a chirp data channel overlaid on a video channel

    Robust and Traffic Aware Medium Access Control Mechanisms for Energy-Efficient mm-Wave Wireless Network-on-Chip Architectures

    To cater to the performance/watt needs, processors with multiple processing cores on the same chip have become the de-facto design choice. In such multicore systems, Network-on-Chip (NoC) serves as a communication infrastructure for data transfer among the cores on the chip. However, conventional metallic interconnect based NoCs are constrained by their long multi-hop latencies and high power consumption, limiting the performance gain in these systems. Among, different alternatives, due to the CMOS compatibility and energy-efficiency, low-latency wireless interconnect operating in the millimeter wave (mm-wave) band is nearer term solution to this multi-hop communication problem. This has led to the recent exploration of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless technologies in wireless NoC architectures (WiNoC). To realize the mm-wave wireless interconnect in a WiNoC, a wireless interface (WI) equipped with on-chip antenna and transceiver circuit operating at 60GHz frequency range is integrated to the ports of some NoC switches. The WIs are also equipped with a medium access control (MAC) mechanism that ensures a collision free and energy-efficient communication among the WIs located at different parts on the chip. However, due to shrinking feature size and complex integration in CMOS technology, high-density chips like multicore systems are prone to manufacturing defects and dynamic faults during chip operation. Such failures can result in permanently broken wireless links or cause the MAC to malfunction in a WiNoC. Consequently, the energy-efficient communication through the wireless medium will be compromised. Furthermore, the energy efficiency in the wireless channel access is also dependent on the traffic pattern of the applications running on the multicore systems. Due to the bursty and self-similar nature of the NoC traffic patterns, the traffic demand of the WIs can vary both spatially and temporally. Ineffective management of such traffic variation of the WIs, limits the performance and energy benefits of the novel mm-wave interconnect technology. Hence, to utilize the full potential of the novel mm-wave interconnect technology in WiNoCs, design of a simple, fair, robust, and efficient MAC is of paramount importance. The main goal of this dissertation is to propose the design principles for robust and traffic-aware MAC mechanisms to provide high bandwidth, low latency, and energy-efficient data communication in mm-wave WiNoCs. The proposed solution has two parts. In the first part, we propose the cross-layer design methodology of robust WiNoC architecture that can minimize the effect of permanent failure of the wireless links and recover from transient failures caused by single event upsets (SEU). Then, in the second part, we present a traffic-aware MAC mechanism that can adjust the transmission slots of the WIs based on the traffic demand of the WIs. The proposed MAC is also robust against the failure of the wireless access mechanism. Finally, as future research directions, this idea of traffic awareness is extended throughout the whole NoC by enabling adaptiveness in both wired and wireless interconnection fabric

    Leveraging Machine Learning Techniques towards Intelligent Networking Automation

    In this thesis, we address some of the challenges that the Intelligent Networking Automation (INA) paradigm poses. Our goal is to design schemes leveraging Machine Learning (ML) techniques to cope with situations that involve hard decision-making actions. The proposed solutions are data-driven and consist of an agent that operates at network elements such as routers, switches, or network servers. The data are gathered from realistic scenarios, either actual network deployments or emulated environments. To evaluate the enhancements that the designed schemes provide, we compare our solutions to non-intelligent ones. Additionally, we assess the trade-off between the obtained improvements and the computational costs of implementing the proposed mechanisms. Accordingly, this thesis tackles the challenges that four specific research problems present. The first topic addresses the problem of balancing traffic in dense Internet of Things (IoT) network scenarios where the end devices and the Base Stations (BSs) form complex networks. By applying ML techniques to discover patterns in the association between the end devices and the BSs, the proposed scheme can balance the traffic load in a IoT network to increase the packet delivery ratio and reduce the energy cost of data delivery. The second research topic proposes an intelligent congestion control for internet connections at edge network elements. The design includes a congestion predictor based on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and an Active Queue Management (AQM) parameter tuner. Similarly, the third research topic includes an intelligent solution to the inter-domain congestion. Different from second topic, this problem considers the preservation of the private network data by means of Federated Learning (FL), since network elements of several organizations participate in the intelligent process. Finally, the fourth research topic refers to a framework to efficiently gathering network telemetry (NT) data. The proposed solution considers a traffic-aware approach so that the NT is intelligently collected and transmitted by the network elements. All the proposed schemes are evaluated through use cases considering standardized networking mechanisms. Therefore, we envision that the solutions of these specific problems encompass a set of methods that can be utilized in real-world scenarios towards the realization of the INA paradigm
