Invariant template matching in systems with spatiotemporal coding: a vote for instability
We consider the design of a pattern recognition that matches templates to
images, both of which are spatially sampled and encoded as temporal sequences.
The image is subject to a combination of various perturbations. These include
ones that can be modeled as parameterized uncertainties such as image blur,
luminance, translation, and rotation as well as unmodeled ones. Biological and
neural systems require that these perturbations be processed through a minimal
number of channels by simple adaptation mechanisms. We found that the most
suitable mathematical framework to meet this requirement is that of weakly
attracting sets. This framework provides us with a normative and unifying
solution to the pattern recognition problem. We analyze the consequences of its
explicit implementation in neural systems. Several properties inherent to the
systems designed in accordance with our normative mathematical argument
coincide with known empirical facts. This is illustrated in mental rotation,
visual search and blur/intensity adaptation. We demonstrate how our results can
be applied to a range of practical problems in template matching and pattern

Passivity and synchronization of coupled complex-valued memristive neural networks
The coupled complex-valued memristive neural networks (CCVMNNs) are investigated in this study. First, we analyze the passivity of the proposed network model by designing an appropriate controller and using certain inequalities as well as Lyapunov functional method, and provide a passivity condition for the considered CCVMNNs. In addition, a criterion for guaranteeing synchronization of this kind of network is established. Finally, the effectiveness and correctness of the acquired theoretical results are verified by a numerical example
Structured Neural-PI Control with End-to-End Stability and Output Tracking Guarantees
We study the optimal control of multiple-input and multiple-output dynamical
systems via the design of neural network-based controllers with stability and
output tracking guarantees. While neural network-based nonlinear controllers
have shown superior performance in various applications, their lack of provable
guarantees has restricted their adoption in high-stake real-world applications.
This paper bridges the gap between neural network-based controllers and the
need for stabilization guarantees. Using equilibrium-independent passivity, a
property present in a wide range of physical systems, we propose neural
Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers that have provable guarantees of
stability and zero steady-state output tracking error. The key structure is the
strict monotonicity on proportional and integral terms, which is parameterized
as gradients of strictly convex neural networks (SCNN). We construct SCNN with
tunable softplus- activations, which yields universal approximation
capability and is also useful in incorporating communication constraints. In
addition, the SCNNs serve as Lyapunov functions, giving us end-to-end
performance guarantees. Experiments on traffic and power networks demonstrate
that the proposed approach improves both transient and steady-state

Exponential state estimation for competitive neural network via stochastic sampled-data control with packet losses
This paper investigates the exponential state estimation problem for competitive neural networks via stochastic sampled-data control with packet losses. Based on this strategy, a switched system model is used to describe packet dropouts for the error system. In addition, transmittal delays between neurons are also considered. Instead of the continuous measurement, the sampled measurement is used to estimate the neuron states, and a sampled-data estimator with probabilistic sampling in two sampling periods is proposed. Then the estimator is designed in terms of the solution to a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which can be solved by using available software. When the missing of control packet occurs, some sufficient conditions are obtained to guarantee that the exponentially stable of the error system by means of constructing an appropriate Lyapunov function and using the average dwell-time technique. Finally, a numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method
Deficits in agency in schizophrenia, and additional deficits in body image, body schema, and internal timing, in passivity symptoms
Individuals with schizophrenia, particularly those with passivity symptoms, may not feel in control of their actions, believing them to be controlled by external agents. Cognitive operations that contribute to these symptoms may include abnormal processing in agency as well as body representations that deal with body schema and body image. However, these operations in schizophrenia are not fully understood, and the questions of general versus specific deficits in individuals with different symptom profiles remain unanswered. Using the projected-hand illusion (a digital video version of the rubber-hand illusion) with synchronous and asynchronous stroking (500 ms delay), and a hand laterality judgment task, we assessed sense of agency, body image, and body schema in 53 people with clinically stable schizophrenia (with a current, past, and no history of passivity symptoms) and 48 healthy controls. The results revealed a stable trait in schizophrenia with no difference between clinical subgroups (sense of agency) and some quantitative (specific) differences depending on the passivity symptom profile (body image and body schema). Specifically, a reduced sense of self-agency was a common feature of all clinical subgroups. However, subgroup comparisons showed that individuals with passivity symptoms (both current and past) had significantly greater deficits on tasks assessing body image and body schema, relative to the other groups. In addition, patients with current passivity symptoms failed to demonstrate the normal reduction in body illusion typically seen with a 500 ms delay in visual feedback (asynchronous condition), suggesting internal timing problems. Altogether, the results underscore self-abnormalities in schizophrenia, provide evidence for both trait abnormalities and state changes specific to passivity symptoms, and point to a role for internal timing deficits as a mechanistic explanation for external cues becoming a possible source of self-body input
First order devices, hybrid memristors, and the frontiers of nonlinear circuit theory
Several devices exhibiting memory effects have shown up in nonlinear circuit
theory in recent years. Among others, these circuit elements include Chua's
memristors, as well as memcapacitors and meminductors. These and other related
devices seem to be beyond the, say, classical scope of circuit theory, which is
formulated in terms of resistors, capacitors, inductors, and voltage and
current sources. We explore in this paper the potential extent of nonlinear
circuit theory by classifying such mem-devices in terms of the variables
involved in their constitutive relations and the notions of the differential-
and the state-order of a device. Within this framework, the frontier of first
order circuit theory is defined by so-called hybrid memristors, which are
proposed here to accommodate a characteristic relating all four fundamental
circuit variables. Devices with differential order two and mem-systems are
discussed in less detail. We allow for fully nonlinear characteristics in all
circuit elements, arriving at a rather exhaustive taxonomy of C^1-devices.
Additionally, we extend the notion of a topologically degenerate configuration
to circuits with memcapacitors, meminductors and all types of memristors, and
