    An algebraic curve is defined as the zero set of a multivariate polynomial. We consider the problem of fitting an algebraic curve to a set of vectors given an additional set of vectors labelled as interior or exterior to the curve. The problem of fitting a linear curve in this way is shown to lend itself to a support vector representation, allowing non-linear curves and high dimensional surfaces to be estimated using kernel functions. The approach is attractive due to the stability of solutions obtained, the range of functional forms made possible (including polynomials), and the potential for applying well understood regularisation operators from the theory of Support Vector Machines

    Disjunctive normal shape models

    A novel implicit parametric shape model is proposed for segmentation and analysis of medical images. Functions representing the shape of an object can be approximated as a union of N polytopes. Each polytope is obtained by the intersection of M half-spaces. The shape function can be approximated as a disjunction of conjunctions, using the disjunctive normal form. The shape model is initialized using seed points defined by the user. We define a cost function based on the Chan-Vese energy functional. The model is differentiable, hence, gradient based optimization algorithms are used to find the model parameters

    PIMs and invariant parts for shape recognition

    Journal ArticleWe present completely new very powerful solutions t o two fundamental problems central to computer vision. 1. Given data sets representing C objects to be stored in a database, and given a new data set for an object, determine the object in the database that is most like the object measured. We solve this problem through use of PIMs ("Polynomial Interpolated Measures"), which, is a new representation integrating implicit polynomial curves and surfaces, explicit polynomials, and discrete data sets which may be sparse. The method provides high accuracy at low computational cost. 2. Given noisy 20 data along a curve (or 30 data along a surface), decompose the data into patches such that new data taken along affine transformation-s or Eucladean transformations of the curve (or surface) can be decomposed into corresponding patches. Then recognition of complex or partially occluded objects can be done in terms of invariantly determined patches. We briefly outline a low computational cost image-database indexing-system based on this representation for objects having complex shape-geometry

    Sampling and Reconstruction of Shapes with Algebraic Boundaries

    We present a sampling theory for a class of binary images with finite rate of innovation (FRI). Every image in our model is the restriction of \mathds{1}_{\{p\leq0\}} to the image plane, where \mathds{1} denotes the indicator function and pp is some real bivariate polynomial. This particularly means that the boundaries in the image form a subset of an algebraic curve with the implicit polynomial pp. We show that the image parameters --i.e., the polynomial coefficients-- satisfy a set of linear annihilation equations with the coefficients being the image moments. The inherent sensitivity of the moments to noise makes the reconstruction process numerically unstable and narrows the choice of the sampling kernels to polynomial reproducing kernels. As a remedy to these problems, we replace conventional moments with more stable \emph{generalized moments} that are adjusted to the given sampling kernel. The benefits are threefold: (1) it relaxes the requirements on the sampling kernels, (2) produces annihilation equations that are robust at numerical precision, and (3) extends the results to images with unbounded boundaries. We further reduce the sensitivity of the reconstruction process to noise by taking into account the sign of the polynomial at certain points, and sequentially enforcing measurement consistency. We consider various numerical experiments to demonstrate the performance of our algorithm in reconstructing binary images, including low to moderate noise levels and a range of realistic sampling kernels.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figure

    Surface patch reconstruction by touching

    This thesis studies the reconstruction of unknown curved surfaces in 3D through contour tracking. The implementation involves a 2-axis joystick sensor and a 4-DOF Adept robot. The joystick\u27s force sensing is combined with the Adept\u27s high positional accuracy to yield precise contact measurements.;A surface patch in 3D can be rebuilt by tracking along three concurrent curves on the surface. These data curves lie in different planes and are acquired via planar contour tracking. The Darboux frame at the curve intersection is first estimated to reflect the local geometry. Then polynomial fitting is carried out in this frame. Minimization of the total (absolute) Gaussian curvature of the surface fit effectively prevents unnecessary folding otherwise expected to result from the use of touching data. Experiments have demonstrated high accuracy of reconstruction

    2014 Spring.Numerical Algebraic Geometry (NAG) has recently seen significantly increased application among scientists and mathematicians as a tool that can be used to solve nonlinear systems of equations, particularly polynomial systems. With the many recent advances in the field, we can now routinely solve problems that could not have been solved even 10 years ago. We will give an introduction and overview of numerical algebraic geometry and homotopy continuation methods; discuss heuristics for preconditioning fewnomial systems, as well as provide a hybrid symbolic-numerical algorithm for computing the solutions of these types of polynomials and associated software called galeDuality; describe a software module of bertini named paramotopy that is scientific software specifically designed for large-scale parameter homotopy runs; give two examples that are parametric polynomial systems on which the aforementioned software is used; and finally describe two novel algorithms, decoupling and a heuristic that makes use of monodromy

    dissertationIn this dissertation, we advance the theory and practice of verifying visualization algorithms. We present techniques to assess visualization correctness through testing of important mathematical properties. Where applicable, these techniques allow us to distinguish whether anomalies in visualization features can be attributed to the underlying physical process or to artifacts from the implementation under verification. Such scientific scrutiny is at the heart of verifiable visualization - subjecting visualization algorithms to the same verification process that is used in other components of the scientific pipeline. The contributions of this dissertation are manifold. We derive the mathematical framework for the expected behavior of several visualization algorithms, and compare them to experimentally observed results in the selected codes. In the Computational Science & Engineering community CS&E, this technique is know as the Method of Manufactured Solution (MMS). We apply MMS to the verification of geometrical and topological properties of isosurface extraction algorithms, and direct volume rendering. We derive the convergence of geometrical properties of isosurface extraction techniques, such as function value and normals. For the verification of topological properties, we use stratified Morse theory and digital topology to design algorithms that verify topological invariants. In the case of volume rendering algorithms, we provide the expected discretization errors for three different error sources. The results of applying the MMS is another important contribution of this dissertation. We report unexpected behavior for almost all implementations tested. In some cases, we were able to find and fix bugs that prevented the correctness of the visualization algorithm. In particular, we address an almost 2 0 -year-old bug with the core disambiguation procedure of Marching Cubes 33, one of the first algorithms intended to preserve the topology of the trilinear interpolant. Finally, an important by-product of this work is a range of responses practitioners can expect to encounter with the visualization technique under verification
