    Essays on Integer Programming in Military and Power Management Applications

    This dissertation presents three essays on important problems motivated by military and power management applications. The array antenna design problem deals with optimal arrangements of substructures called subarrays. The considered class of the stochastic assignment problem addresses uncertainty of assignment weights over time. The well-studied deterministic counterpart of the problem has many applications including some classes of the weapon-target assignment. The speed scaling problem is of minimizing energy consumption of parallel processors in a data warehouse environment. We study each problem to discover its underlying structure and formulate tailored mathematical models. Exact, approximate, and heuristic solution approaches employing advanced optimization techniques are proposed. They are validated through simulations and their superiority is demonstrated through extensive computational experiments. Novelty of the developed methods and their methodological contribution to the field of Operations Research is discussed through out the dissertation

    Route, modulation format, MIMO and spectrum assignment in Flex-Grid/MCF transparent optical core networks

    In this paper, we target an optimal multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing (MIMO-DSP) assignment to super-channels affected by intercore crosstalk (ICXT) in multicore fiber (MCF) enabled transparent optical core networks. MIMO-DSP undoes ICXT effects, but can be costly with high core density MCFs. Hence, its implementation in the network must be carefully decided. We address our objective as a joint route, modulation format, MIMO and spectrum assignment (RMMSA) problem, for which integer linear programming formulations are provided to optimally solve it in small network scenarios. Moreover, several heuristic approaches are also proposed to solve large-scale problem instances with good accuracy. Their goal is to minimize both network spectral requirements and the amount of MIMO equalized super-channels, taking a crosstalk-free space division multiplexing (SDM) solution as a reference, for example, based on parallel single mode fibers [i.e., a multifiber (MF) scenario]. For our evaluation, we consider several state-of-the-art MCF prototypes and different network topologies. The obtained results, with the considered MCFs, disclose that in national backbone networks, the desirable percentage of super-channels with MIMO equalization to match the performance of an equivalent crosstalk-free SDM solution ranges from 0% to 36, while in continental-wide networks this range raises from 0% to 56%. In addition, in the case of a nonideal MIMO (with a 3 dB/km of crosstalk compensation), such percentages range from 0% to 28% and from 0% to 45% in national and continental-wide backbone networks, respectively, experimenting a performance gap up to 12% with respect to the MF reference scenario.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Mathematical Modelling for Load Balancing and Minimization of Coordination Losses in Multirobot Stations

    The automotive industry is moving from mass production towards an individualized production, in order to improve product quality and reduce costs and material waste. This thesis concerns aspects of load balancing of industrial robots in the automotive manufacturing industry, considering efficient algorithms required by an individualized production. The goal of the load balancing problem is to improve the equipment utilization. Several approaches for solving the load balancing problem are presented along with details on mathematical tools and subroutines employed.Our contributions to the solution of the load balancing problem are manifold. First, to circumvent robot coordination we have constructed disjoint robot programs, which require no coordination schemes, are more flexible, admit competitive cycle times for some industrial instances, and may be preferred in an individualized production. Second, since solving the task assignment problem for generating the disjoint robot programs was found to be unreasonably time-consuming, we modelled it as a generalized unrelated parallel machine problem with set packing constraints and suggested a tighter model formulation, which was proven to be much more tractable for a branch--and--cut solver. Third, within continuous collision detection it needs to be determined whether the sweeps of multiple moving robots are disjoint. Our solution uses the maximum velocity of each robot along with distance computations at certain robot configurations to derive a function that provides lower bounds on the minimum distance between the sweeps. The lower bounding function is iteratively minimized and updated with new distance information; our method is substantially faster than previously developed methods

    Theoretical and computational advances in finite-size facility placement and assignment problems

    The goal of this research is to develop fundamental theory and exact solution methods for the optimal placement of multiple, finite-size, rectangular facilities in presence of existing rectangular facilities, in a plane. Applications of this research can be found in facility layout (re)design in manufacturing, distribution systems, services (retail outlets, hospital floors, etc.), and printed circuit board design; where designing an efficient layout can save millions of dollars in operational costs. Main difficulty of this optimization problem lies in its continuous non-convex/non-concave feasible space, which makes it tough to escape local optimality. Through this research, novel approaches will be proposed which can be used to distill this continuous space into a finite set of candidate solutions, making it amenable to search for the global optimum. The first two parts of this research deal with establishing a unified theory for the finite-size facility placement problem and establishing the theory of dominance for pruning the sub-optimal solutions. Traditionally, the facility location/layout problems are modeled as the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP), which is strongly NP-hard. Also, for getting strong lower bounds in the dominance procedure, we may need to solve an instance of the NP-hard Quadratic Semi-Assignment Problem (QSAP). To this end, the third part of this research deals with investigating parallel and High Performance Computing (HPC) methods for solving the Linear Assignment Problem (LAP), which is an important sub-problem of the QAP. The final part of this research deals with investigating parallel and HPC methods for obtaining strong lower bounds and possibly solving large QAPs. Since QAP is known to be a computationally intensive problem, it should be noted that large in this context means problem instances with up to 30 facilities and locations

    PasMoQAP: A Parallel Asynchronous Memetic Algorithm for solving the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem

    Multi-Objective Optimization Problems (MOPs) have attracted growing attention during the last decades. Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) have been extensively used to address MOPs because are able to approximate a set of non-dominated high-quality solutions. The Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem (mQAP) is a MOP. The mQAP is a generalization of the classical QAP which has been extensively studied, and used in several real-life applications. The mQAP is defined as having as input several flows between the facilities which generate multiple cost functions that must be optimized simultaneously. In this study, we propose PasMoQAP, a parallel asynchronous memetic algorithm to solve the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem. PasMoQAP is based on an island model that structures the population by creating sub-populations. The memetic algorithm on each island individually evolve a reduced population of solutions, and they asynchronously cooperate by sending selected solutions to the neighboring islands. The experimental results show that our approach significatively outperforms all the island-based variants of the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm NSGA-II. We show that PasMoQAP is a suitable alternative to solve the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.     Efficiency of the solution representations for the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with makespan objective

    In this paper we address the classical hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with makespan objective. As this problem is known to be NP-hard and a very common layout in real-life manufacturing scenarios, many studies have been proposed in the literature to solve it. These contributions use different solution representations of the feasible schedules, each one with its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of them do not guarantee that all feasible semiactive schedules are represented in the space of solutions –thus limiting in principle their effectiveness– but, on the other hand, these simpler solution representations possess clear advantages in terms of having consistent neighbourhoods with well-defined neighbourhood moves. Therefore, there is a trade-off between the solution space reduction and the ability to conduct an efficient search in this reduced solution space. This trade-off is determined by two aspects, i.e. the extent of the solution space reduction, and the quality of the schedules left aside by this solution space reduction. In this paper, we analyse the efficiency of the different solution representations employed in the literature for the problem. More specifically, we first establish the size of the space of semiactive schedules achieved by the different solution representations and, secondly, we address the issue of the quality of the schedules that can be achieved by these representations using the optimal solutions given by several MILP models and complete enumeration.
