    LOCSET phase locking : operation, diagnostics, and applications

    The aim of this dissertation is to discuss the theoretical and experimental work recently done with the Locking of Optical Coherence via Single-detector Electronic-frequency Tagging (LOCSET) phase locking technique developed and employed here are AFRL. The primary objectives of this effort are to detail the fundamental operation of the LOCSET phase locking technique, recognize the conditions in which the LOCSET control electronics optimally operate, demonstrate LOCSET phase locking with higher channel counts than ever before, and extend the LOCSET technique to correct for low order, atmospherically induced, phase aberrations introduced to the output of a tiled array of coherently combinable beams. The experimental work performed for this effort resulted in the coherent combination of 32 low power optical beams operating with unprecedented LOCSET phase error performance of λ/71 RMS in a local loop beam combination configuration. The LOCSET phase locking technique was also successfully extended, for the first time, into an Object In the Loop (OIL) configuration by utilizing light scattered off of a remote object as the optical return signal for the LOCSET phase control electronics. Said LOCSET-OIL technique is capable of correcting for low order phase aberrations caused by atmospheric turbulence disturbances applied across a tiled array output

    HAPTIC AND VISUAL SIMULATION OF BONE DISSECTION

    Marco AgusIn bone dissection virtual simulation, force restitution represents the key to realistically mimicking a patient– specific operating environment. The force is rendered using haptic devices controlled by parametrized mathematical models that represent the bone–burr contact. This dissertation presents and discusses a haptic simulation of a bone cutting burr, that it is being developed as a component of a training system for temporal bone surgery. A physically based model was used to describe the burr– bone interaction, including haptic forces evaluation, bone erosion process and resulting debris. The model was experimentally validated and calibrated by employing a custom experimental set–up consisting of a force–controlled robot arm holding a high–speed rotating tool and a contact force measuring apparatus. Psychophysical testing was also carried out to assess individual reaction to the haptic environment. The results suggest that the simulator is capable of rendering the basic material differences required for bone burring tasks. The current implementation, directly operating on a voxel discretization of patientspecific 3D CT and MR imaging data, is efficient enough to provide real–time haptic and visual feedback on a low–end multi–processing PC platform.

    Information Bottleneck

    The celebrated information bottleneck (IB) principle of Tishby et al. has recently enjoyed renewed attention due to its application in the area of deep learning. This collection investigates the IB principle in this new context. The individual chapters in this collection: • provide novel insights into the functional properties of the IB; • discuss the IB principle (and its derivates) as an objective for training multi-layer machine learning structures such as neural networks and decision trees; and • offer a new perspective on neural network learning via the lens of the IB framework. Our collection thus contributes to a better understanding of the IB principle specifically for deep learning and, more generally, of information–theoretic cost functions in machine learning. This paves the way toward explainable artificial intelligence
