Kompetensi pembimbing syarikat bertauliah Sistem Latihan Dual Nasional (SLDN)

The effects of packing structure on the effective thermal conductivity of granular media: A grain scale investigation
Structural characteristics are considered to be the dominant factors in
determining the effective properties of granular media, particularly in the
scope of transport phenomena. Towards improved heat management, thermal
transport in granular media requires an improved fundamental understanding. In
this study, the effects of packing structure on heat transfer in granular media
are evaluated at macro- and grain-scales. At the grain-scale, a gas-solid
coupling heat transfer model is adapted into a discrete-element-method to
simulate this transport phenomenon. The numerical framework is validated by
experimental data obtained using a plane source technique, and the
Smoluschowski effect of the gas phase is found to be captured by this
extension. By considering packings of spherical SiO2 grains with an
interstitial helium phase, vibration induced ordering in granular media is
studied, using the simulation methods developed here, to investigate how
disorder-to-order transitions of packing structure enhance effective thermal
conductivity. Grain-scale thermal transport is shown to be influenced by the
local neighbourhood configuration of individual grains. The formation of an
ordered packing structure enhances both global and local thermal transport.
This study provides a structure approach to explain transport phenomena, which
can be applied in properties modification for granular media.Comment: 11 figures, 29 page
Piling and avalanches of magnetized particles
We performed computer simulations based on a two-dimensional Distinct Element
Method to study granular systems of magnetized spherical particles. We measured
the angle of repose and the surface roughness of particle piles, and we studied
the effect of magnetization on avalanching. We report linear dependence of both
angle of repose and surface roughness on the ratio of the magnetic dipole
interaction and the gravitational force (\emph{interparticle force ratio}).
There is a difference in avalanche formation at small and at large
interparticle force ratios. The transition is at . For
the particles forming the avalanches leave the system in a quasi-continuous
granular flow (\emph{granular regime}), while for the avalanches are
formed by long particle clusters (\emph{correlated regime}). The transition is
not sharp. We give plausible estimates for based on stability criteria.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
Combined 3D thinning and greedy algorithm to approximate realistic particles with corrected mechanical properties
The shape of irregular particles has significant influence on micro- and
macro-scopic behavior of granular systems. This paper presents a combined 3D
thinning and greedy set-covering algorithm to approximate realistic particles
with a clump of overlapping spheres for discrete element method (DEM)
simulations. First, the particle medial surface (or surface skeleton), from
which all candidate (maximal inscribed) spheres can be generated, is computed
by the topological 3D thinning. Then, the clump generation procedure is
converted into a greedy set-covering (SCP) problem.
To correct the mass distribution due to highly overlapped spheres inside the
clump, linear programming (LP) is used to adjust the density of each component
sphere, such that the aggregate properties mass, center of mass and inertia
tensor are identical or close enough to the prototypical particle. In order to
find the optimal approximation accuracy (volume coverage: ratio of clump's
volume to the original particle's volume), particle flow of 3 different shapes
in a rotating drum are conducted. It was observed that the dynamic angle of
repose starts to converge for all particle shapes at 85% volume coverage
(spheres per clump < 30), which implies the possible optimal resolution to
capture the mechanical behavior of the system.Comment: 34 pages, 13 figure
A discrete element method representation of an anisotropic elastic continuum
A method for modeling cubically anisotropic elasticity within the discrete element method is presented. The discrete element method (DEM) is an approach originally intended for modeling granular materials (sand, soil, and powders); however, recent developments have usefully extended it to model stochastic mechanical processes in monolithic solids which, to date, have been assumed to be elastically isotropic. The method presented here for efficiently capturing cubic elasticity in DEM is an important prerequisite for further extending DEM to capture the influence of elastic anisotropy on the mechanical response of polycrystals, composites, etc. The system demonstrated here uses a directionally assigned stiffness in the bonds between adjacent elements and includes separate schemes for achieving anisotropy with Zener ratios greater and smaller than one. The model framework is presented along with an analysis of the accessible space of elastic properties that can be modeled and an artificial neural network interpolation scheme for mapping input parameters to model elastic behavior
Dynamic development of hydrofracture
Many natural examples of complex joint and vein networks in layered sedimentary rocks are hydrofractures that form by a combination of pore fluid overpressure and tectonic stresses. In this paper, a two-dimensional hybrid hydro-mechanical formulation is proposed to model the dynamic development of natural hydrofractures. The numerical scheme combines a discrete element model (DEM) framework that represents a porous solid medium with a supplementary Darcy based pore-pressure diffusion as continuum description for the fluid. This combination yields a porosity controlled coupling between an evolving fracture network and the associated hydraulic field. The model is tested on some basic cases of hydro-driven fracturing commonly found in nature, e.g., fracturing due to local fluid overpressure in rocks subjected to hydrostatic and nonhydrostatic tectonic loadings. In our models we find that seepage forces created by hydraulic pressure gradients together with poroelastic feedback upon discrete fracturing play a significant role in subsurface rock deformation. These forces manipulate the growth and geometry of hydrofractures in addition to tectonic stresses and the mechanical properties of the porous rocks. Our results show characteristic failure patterns that reflect different tectonic and lithological conditions and are qualitatively consistent with existing analogue and numerical studies as well as field observations. The applied scheme is numerically efficient, can be applied at various scales and is computational cost effective with the least involvement of sophisticated mathematical computation of hydrodynamic flow between the solid grains
