    Promoting the use of reliable rate based transport protocols: the Chameleon protocol

    Rate-based congestion control, such as TFRC, has not been designed to enable reliability. Indeed, the birth of TFRC protocol has resulted from the need for a congestion-controlled transport protocol in order to carry multimedia traffic. However, certain applications still prefer the use of UDP in order to implement their own congestion control on top of it. The present contribution proposes to design and validate a reliable rate-based protocol based on the combined use of TFRC, SACK and an adapted flow control. We argue that rate-based congestion control is a perfect alternative to window-based congestion control as most of today applications need to interact with the transport layer and should not be only limited to unreliable services. In this paper, we detail the implementation of a reliable rate-based protocol named Chameleon and bring out to the networking community an ns-2 implementation for evaluation purpose

    SSthreshless Start: A Sender-Side TCP Intelligence for Long Fat Network

    Measurement shows that 85% of TCP flows in the internet are short-lived flows that stay most of their operation in the TCP startup phase. However, many previous studies indicate that the traditional TCP Slow Start algorithm does not perform well, especially in long fat networks. Two obvious problems are known to impact the Slow Start performance, which are the blind initial setting of the Slow Start threshold and the aggressive increase of the probing rate during the startup phase regardless of the buffer sizes along the path. Current efforts focusing on tuning the Slow Start threshold and/or probing rate during the startup phase have not been considered very effective, which has prompted an investigation with a different approach. In this paper, we present a novel TCP startup method, called threshold-less slow start or SSthreshless Start, which does not need the Slow Start threshold to operate. Instead, SSthreshless Start uses the backlog status at bottleneck buffer to adaptively adjust probing rate which allows better seizing of the available bandwidth. Comparing to the traditional and other major modified startup methods, our simulation results show that SSthreshless Start achieves significant performance improvement during the startup phase. Moreover, SSthreshless Start scales well with a wide range of buffer size, propagation delay and network bandwidth. Besides, it shows excellent friendliness when operating simultaneously with the currently popular TCP NewReno connections.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, 7 table

    Performance evaluation of multipath transport protocol in heterogeneous network environments

    Performance of multipath transport protocols is known to be sensitive to path asymmetry. The difference between each path in terms of bandwidth, delay and packet loss has a potential to significantly decrease the overall performance of a data flow carried over multiple asymmetric paths. In this paper, we evaluate and analyse reliable data transfer in Concurrent Multipath Transfer extension of Stream Control Transport Protocol (CMT-SCTP) under various conditions of network asymmetry, with a focus on the use case where 3G and Wi-Fi networks are simultaneously available. We identify various causes of performance degradation, review the impact of CMT-SACK extension under path asymmetry and show that the total achievable goodput of a reliable in-order data flow over multiple heterogeneous paths is ruled by the characteristics of the worst path as perceived by the transport protocol. To support our study, we derive a simple analytical model of the receiver window blocking and validate it via simulation

    TCP smart framing: a segmentation algorithm to reduce TCP latency

    TCP Smart Framing, or TCP-SF for short, enables the Fast Retransmit/Recovery algorithms even when the congestion window is small. Without modifying the TCP congestion control based on the additive-increase/multiplicative-decrease paradigm, TCP-SF adopts a novel segmentation algorithm: while Classic TCP always tries to send full-sized segments, a TCP-SF source adopts a more flexible segmentation algorithm to try and always have a number of in-flight segments larger than 3 so as to enable Fast Recovery. We motivate this choice by real traffic measurements, which indicate that today's traffic is populated by short-lived flows, whose only means to recover from a packet loss is by triggering a Retransmission Timeout. The key idea of TCP-SF can be implemented on top of any TCP flavor, from Tahoe to SACK, and requires modifications to the server TCP stack only, and can be easily coupled with recent TCP enhancements. The performance of the proposed TCP modification were studied by means of simulations, live measurements and an analytical model. In addition, the analytical model we have devised has a general scope, making it a valid tool for TCP performance evaluation in the small window region. Improvements are remarkable under several buffer management schemes, and maximized by byte-oriented schemes

    A survey of performance enhancement of transmission control protocol (TCP) in wireless ad hoc networks

Compared to wired networks, wireless ad hoc networks have some specific characteristics such as node mobility and a shared medium. Owing to these specific characteristics of wireless ad hoc networks, TCP faces particular problems with, for example, route failure, channel contention and high bit error rates. These factors are responsible for the performance degradation of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. The research community has produced a wide range of proposals to improve the performance of TCP in wireless ad hoc networks. This article presents a survey of these proposals (approaches). A classification of TCP improvement proposals for wireless ad hoc networks is presented, which makes it easy to compare the proposals falling under the same category. Tables which summarize the approaches for quick overview are provided. Possible directions for further improvements in this area are suggested in the conclusions.     Transport congestion events detection (TCED): towards decorrelating congestion detection from TCP

    TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) uses a loss-based algorithm to estimate whether the network is congested or not. The main difficulty for this algorithm is to distinguish spurious from real network congestion events. Other research studies have proposed to enhance the reliability of this congestion estimation by modifying the internal TCP algorithm. In this paper, we propose an original congestion event algorithm implemented independently of the TCP source code. Basically, we propose a modular architecture to implement a congestion event detection algorithm to cope with the increasing complexity of the TCP code and we use it to understand why some spurious congestion events might not be detected in some complex cases. We show that our proposal is able to increase the reliability of TCP NewReno congestion detection algorithm that might help to the design of detection criterion independent of the TCP code. We find out that solutions based only on RTT (Round-Trip Time) estimation are not accurate enough to cover all existing cases. Furthermore, we evaluate our algorithm with and without network reordering where other inaccuracies, not previously identified, occur

    Smart Acknowledgement Distributed Channel Access Scheme for TCP in MANETs

    TCP upon wireless networks is most challenging issue because of random losses and ACK interference. Also, TCP suffers from performance declination in terms of creating delay and overhead in network because of poor characteristics of wireless channel. In order to overcome these issues, we proposed a Smart Acknowledgement Distributed Channel Access (SADCA) scheme for TCP in MANETs. In the proposed scheme, first a separate Access Category (AC) for data less TCP acknowledgement packets is used and then it is assigned with highest priority. In this way, delay during transmission of packet can be reduced and also packet can be acknowledged immediately. Also, to increase the performance, delay window size can be adjusted by considering the parameters such as transmission rate, number of hops, and channel occupied ratio (COR).
