    Asymmetrical Half-join Method on Dual Vision Face Recognition

    This research proposes a model of face recognition using the method of joining two face images from left and right lens from a stereo vision camera namely half-join method. Half-join method is used in face image normalization processing. The proposed half-join method is a face images joining model, which is called asymmetrical half-join. In asymmetrical half-join method, a RoI (region of interest) of face image from left and right lenses are provided based on axis center of each eye in eye detection. The cropping of face image from asymmetrical half-join model has different width depends on eyes coordinate location. The proposed system shows that the asymmetrical half-join method can produce a better of face recognition rate. The experimental results show that the asymmetrical half-join method has a better recognition rate and computation time than single vision method and symmetrical half-join method

    Differential Evolution to Optimize Hidden Markov Models Training: Application to Facial Expression Recognition

    The base system in this paper uses Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) to model dynamic relationships among facial features in facial behavior interpretation and understanding field. The input of HMMs is a new set of derived features from geometrical distances obtained from detected and automatically tracked facial points. Numerical data representation which is in the form of multi-time series is transformed to a symbolic representation in order to reduce dimensionality, extract the most pertinent information and give a meaningful representation to humans. The main problem of the use of HMMs is that the training is generally trapped in local minima, so we used the Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm to offer more diversity and so limit as much as possible the occurrence of stagnation. For this reason, this paper proposes to enhance HMM learning abilities by the use of DE as an optimization tool, instead of the classical Baum and Welch algorithm. Obtained results are compared against the traditional learning approach and significant improvements have been obtained.</p

    Inferring Human Pose and Motion from Images

    As optical gesture recognition technology advances, touchless human computer interfaces of the future will soon become a reality. One particular technology, markerless motion capture, has gained a large amount of attention, with widespread application in diverse disciplines, including medical science, sports analysis, advanced user interfaces, and virtual arts. However, the complexity of human anatomy makes markerless motion capture a non-trivial problem: I) parameterised pose configuration exhibits high dimensionality, and II) there is considerable ambiguity in surjective inverse mapping from observation to pose configuration spaces with a limited number of camera views. These factors together lead to multimodality in high dimensional space, making markerless motion capture an ill-posed problem. This study challenges these difficulties by introducing a new framework. It begins with automatically modelling specific subject template models and calibrating posture at the initial stage. Subsequent tracking is accomplished by embedding naturally-inspired global optimisation into the sequential Bayesian filtering framework. Tracking is enhanced by several robust evaluation improvements. Sparsity of images is managed by compressive evaluation, further accelerating computational efficiency in high dimensional space

    This book provides an overview of state of the art research in Affective Computing. It presents new ideas, original results and practical experiences in this increasingly important research field. The book consists of 23 chapters categorized into four sections. Since one of the most important means of human communication is facial expression, the first section of this book (Chapters 1 to 7) presents a research on synthesis and recognition of facial expressions. Given that we not only use the face but also body movements to express ourselves, in the second section (Chapters 8 to 11) we present a research on perception and generation of emotional expressions by using full-body motions. The third section of the book (Chapters 12 to 16) presents computational models on emotion, as well as findings from neuroscience research.
