Efficient Wave-based Sound Propagation and Optimization for Computer-Aided Design

Acoustic phenomena have a large impact on our everyday lives, from influencing our enjoyment of music in a concert hall, to affecting our concentration at school or work, to potentially negatively impacting our health through deafening noises. The sound that reaches our ears is absorbed, reflected, and filtered by the shape, topology, and materials present in the environment. However, many computer simulation techniques for solving these sound propagation problems are either computationally expensive or inaccurate. Additionally, the costs of some methods are dramatically increased in design optimization processes in which several iterations of sound propagation evaluation are necessary. The primary goal of this dissertation is to present techniques for efficiently solving the sound propagation problem and related optimization problems for computer-aided design. First, we propose a parallel method for solving large acoustic propagation problems, scalable to tens of thousands of cores. Second, we present two novel techniques for optimizing certain acoustic characteristics such as reverberation time or sound clarity using wave-based sound propagation. Finally, we show how hybrid sound propagation algorithms can be used to improve the performance of acoustic optimization problems and present two algorithms for noise minimization and speech intelligibility improvement that use this hybrid approach. All the algorithms we present are evaluated on various benchmarks that are computer models of architectural scenes. These benchmarks include challenging environments for existing sound propagation algorithms, such as large indoor or outdoor scenes, structural complex scenes, or the prevalence of difficult-to-model sound propagation phenomena. Using the techniques put forth in this dissertation, we can solve many challenging sound propagation and optimization problems on the scenes in an efficient manner. We are able to accurately model sound propagation using wave-based approaches up to \SI{10}{\kilo\hertz} (the full range of human speech) and for the full range of human hearing (22kHz) using our hybrid approach. Our noise minimization methods show improvements of up to 13dB in noise reduction on some scenes, and we show a 71\% improvement in speech intelligibility using our algorithm.Doctor of Philosoph

Critical Aspects of Electric Motor Drive Controllers and Mitigation of Torque Ripple - Review

    Get PDF
Electric vehicles (EVs) are playing a vital role in sustainable transportation. It is estimated that by 2030, Battery EVs will become mainstream for passenger car transportation. Even though EVs are gaining interest in sustainable transportation, the future of EV power transmission is facing vital concerns and open research challenges. Considering the case of torque ripple mitigation and improved reliability control techniques in motors, many motor drive control algorithms fail to provide efficient control. To efficiently address this issue, control techniques such as Field Orientation Control (FOC), Direct Torque Control (DTC), Model Predictive Control (MPC), Sliding Mode Control (SMC), and Intelligent Control (IC) techniques are used in the motor drive control algorithms. This literature survey exclusively compares the various advanced control techniques for conventionally used EV motors such as Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDC), Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), and Induction Motors (IM). Furthermore, this paper discusses the EV-motors history, types of EVmotors, EV-motor drives powertrain mathematical modelling, and design procedure of EV-motors. The hardware results have also been compared with different control techniques for BLDC and SRM hub motors. Future direction towards the design of EV by critical selection of motors and their control techniques to minimize the torque ripple and other research opportunities to enhance the performance of EVs are also presented.publishedVersio

Exploiting Sparse Structures in Source Localization and Tracking

    Get PDF
This thesis deals with the modeling of structured signals under different sparsity constraints. Many phenomena exhibit an inherent structure that may be exploited when setting up models, examples include audio waves, radar, sonar, and image objects. These structures allow us to model, identify, and classify the processes, enabling parameter estimation for, e.g., identification, localisation, and tracking. In this work, such structures are exploited, with the goal to achieve efficient localisation and tracking of a structured source signal. Specifically, two scenarios are considered. In papers A and B, the aim is to find a sparse subset of a structured signal such that the signal parameters and source locations maybe estimated in an optimal way. For the sparse subset selection, a combinatorial optimization problem is approximately solved by means of convex relaxation, with the results of allowing for different types of a priori information to be incorporated in the optimization. In paper C, a sparse subset of data is provided, and a generative model is used to find the location of an unknown number of jammers in a wireless network, with the jammers’ movement in the network being tracked as additional observations become available

Development, Optimization and Clinical Evaluation Of Algorithms For Ultrasound Data Analysis Used In Selected Medical Applications.

The assessment of soft and hard tissues is critical when selecting appropriate protocols for restorative and regenerative therapy in the field of dental surgery. The chosen treatment methodology will have significant ramifications on healing time, success rate and overall long-time oral health. Currently used diagnostic methods are limited to visual and invasive assessments; they are often user-dependent, inaccurate and result in misinterpretation. As such, the clinical need has been identified for objective tissue characterization, and the proposed novel ultrasound-based approach was designed to address the identified need. The device prototype consists of a miniaturized probe with a specifically designed ultrasonic transducer, electronics responsible for signal generation and acquisition, as well as an optimized signal processing algorithm required for data analysis. An algorithm where signals are being processed and features extracted in real-time has been implemented and studied. An in-depth algorithm performance study has been presented on synthetic signals. Further, in-vitro laboratory experiments were performed using the developed device with the algorithm implemented in software on animal-based samples. Results validated the capabilities of the new system to reproduce gingival assessment rapidly and effectively. The developed device has met clinical usability requirements for effectiveness and performance

In-wheel motor vibration control for distributed-driven electric vehicles:A review

    Get PDF
Efficient, safe, and comfortable electric vehicles (EVs) are essential for the creation of a sustainable transport system. Distributed-driven EVs, which often use in-wheel motors (IWMs), have many benefits with respect to size (compactness), controllability, and efficiency. However, the vibration of IWMs is a particularly important factor for both passengers and drivers, and it is therefore crucial for a successful commercialization of distributed-driven EVs. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review and state-of-the-art vibration-source-analysis and -mitigation methods in IWMs. First, selection criteria are given for IWMs, and a multidimensional comparison for several motor types is provided. The IWM vibration sources are then divided into internally-, and externally-induced vibration sources and discussed in detail. Next, vibration reduction methods, which include motor-structure optimization, motor controller, and additional control-components, are reviewed. Emerging research trends and an outlook for future improvement aims are summarized at the end of the paper. This paper can provide useful information for researchers, who are interested in the application and vibration mitigation of IWMs or similar topics
