The 33th Annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing, held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in March of 1996, addressed the theme of "Digital Image Access & Retrieval." The papers from this conference cover a wide range of topics concerning digital imaging technology for visual resource collections. Optimization Beyond the Convolution: Generalizing Spatial Relations with End-to-End Metric Learning
To operate intelligently in domestic environments, robots require the ability
to understand arbitrary spatial relations between objects and to generalize
them to objects of varying sizes and shapes. In this work, we present a novel
end-to-end approach to generalize spatial relations based on distance metric
learning. We train a neural network to transform 3D point clouds of objects to
a metric space that captures the similarity of the depicted spatial relations,
using only geometric models of the objects. Our approach employs gradient-based
optimization to compute object poses in order to imitate an arbitrary target
relation by reducing the distance to it under the learned metric. Our results
based on simulated and real-world experiments show that the proposed method
enables robots to generalize spatial relations to unknown objects over a

Database Systems - Present and Future
The database systems have nowadays an increasingly important role in the knowledge-based society, in which computers have penetrated all fields of activity and the Internet tends to develop worldwide. In the current informatics context, the development of the applications with databases is the work of the specialists. Using databases, reach a database from various applications, and also some of related concepts, have become accessible to all categories of IT users. This paper aims to summarize the curricular area regarding the fundamental database systems issues, which are necessary in order to train specialists in economic informatics higher education. The database systems integrate and interfere with several informatics technologies and therefore are more difficult to understand and use. Thus, students should know already a set of minimum, mandatory concepts and their practical implementation: computer systems, programming techniques, programming languages, data structures. What Matters to You? Towards Visual Representation Alignment for Robot Learning
When operating in service of people, robots need to optimize rewards aligned
with end-user preferences. Since robots will rely on raw perceptual inputs like
RGB images, their rewards will inevitably use visual representations. Recently
there has been excitement in using representations from pre-trained visual
models, but key to making these work in robotics is fine-tuning, which is
typically done via proxy tasks like dynamics prediction or enforcing temporal
cycle-consistency. However, all these proxy tasks bypass the human's input on
what matters to them, exacerbating spurious correlations and ultimately leading
to robot behaviors that are misaligned with user preferences. In this work, we
propose that robots should leverage human feedback to align their visual
representations with the end-user and disentangle what matters for the task. We
propose Representation-Aligned Preference-based Learning (RAPL), a method for
solving the visual representation alignment problem and visual reward learning
problem through the lens of preference-based learning and optimal transport.
Across experiments in X-MAGICAL and in robotic manipulation, we find that
RAPL's reward consistently generates preferred robot behaviors with high sample
efficiency, and shows strong zero-shot generalization when the visual
representation is learned from a different embodiment than the robot's
Functional description of a command and control language tutor
The status of an ongoing project to explore the application of Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) technology to NASA command and control languages is described. The primary objective of the current phase of the project is to develop a user interface for an ITS to assist NASA control center personnel in learning Systems Test and Operations Language (STOL). Although this ITS will be developed for Gamma Ray Observatory operators, it will be designed with sufficient flexibility so that its modules may serve as an ITS for other control languages such as the User Interface Language (UIL). The focus of this phase is to develop at least one other form of STOL representation to complement the operational STOL interface. Such an alternative representation would be adaptively employed during the tutoring session to facilitate the learning process. This is a key feature of this ITS which distinguishes it from a simulator that is only capable of representing the operational environment
Abmash: Mashing Up Legacy Web Applications by Automated Imitation of Human Actions
Many business web-based applications do not offer applications programming
interfaces (APIs) to enable other applications to access their data and
functions in a programmatic manner. This makes their composition difficult (for
instance to synchronize data between two applications). To address this
challenge, this paper presents Abmash, an approach to facilitate the
integration of such legacy web applications by automatically imitating human
interactions with them. By automatically interacting with the graphical user
interface (GUI) of web applications, the system supports all forms of
integrations including bi-directional interactions and is able to interact with
AJAX-based applications. Furthermore, the integration programs are easy to
write since they deal with end-user, visual user-interface elements. The

Progressive Analytics: A Computation Paradigm for Exploratory Data Analysis
Exploring data requires a fast feedback loop from the analyst to the system,
with a latency below about 10 seconds because of human cognitive limitations.
When data becomes large or analysis becomes complex, sequential computations
can no longer be completed in a few seconds and data exploration is severely
hampered. This article describes a novel computation paradigm called
Progressive Computation for Data Analysis or more concisely Progressive
Analytics, that brings at the programming language level a low-latency
guarantee by performing computations in a progressive fashion. Moving this
progressive computation at the language level relieves the programmer of
exploratory data analysis systems from implementing the whole analytics
pipeline in a progressive way from scratch, streamlining the implementation of
scalable exploratory data analysis systems. This article describes the new
