    Get PDF
This paper presents a new method for determining the optimal sizing of standalone photovoltaic (PV) system in terms of optimal sizing of PV array and battery storage. A standalone PV system energy flow is first analysed, and the MATLAB fitting tool is used to fit the resultant sizing curves in order to derive general formulas for optimal sizing of PV array and battery. In deriving the formulas for optimal sizing of PV array and battery, the data considered are based on five sites in Malaysia, which are Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bharu, Ipoh, Kuching, and Alor Setar. Based on the results of the designed example for a PV system installed in Kuala Lumpur, the proposed method gives satisfactory optimal sizing results

Optimal sizing of C-type passive filters under non-sinusoidal conditions

In the literature, much attention has been focused on power system harmonics. One of its important effects is degradation of the load power factor. In this article, a C-type filter is used for reducing harmonic distortion, improving system performance, and compensating reactive power in order to improve the load power factor while taking into account economic considerations. Optimal sizing of the C-type filter parameters based on maximization of the load power factor as an objective function is determined. The total installation cost of the C-type filter and that of the conventional shunt (single-tuned) passive filter are comparatively evaluated. Background voltage and load current harmonics are taken into account. Recommendations defined in IEEE standards 519-1992 and 18-2002 are taken as the main constraints in this study. The presented design is tested using four numerical cases taken from previous publications, and the proposed filter results are compared with those of other published techniques. The results validate that the performance of the C-type passive filter as a low-pass filter is acceptable, especially in the case of lower short-circuit capacity systems. The C-type filter may achieve the same power factor with a lower total installation cost than a single-tuned passive filter

Optimal Sizing of Voltage Control Devices for Distribution Circuit with Intermittent Load

We consider joint control of a switchable capacitor and a D-STATCOM for voltage regulation in a distribution circuit with intermittent load. The control problem is formulated as a two-timescale optimal power flow problem with chance constraints, which minimizes power loss while limiting the probability of voltage violations due to fast changes in load. The control problem forms the basis of an optimization problem which determines the sizes of the control devices by minimizing sum of the expected power loss cost and the capital cost. We develop computationally efficient heuristics to solve the optimal sizing problem and implement real-time control. Numerical experiments on a circuit with high-performance computing (HPC) load show that the proposed sizing and control schemes significantly improve the reliability of voltage regulation on the expense of only a moderate increase in cost.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to HICSS'1

Optimal sizing of grid-connected rooftop photovoltaic and battery energy storage for houses with electric vehicle

A practical optimal sizing model is developed for grid-connected rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage (BES) of homes with electric vehicle (EV) to minimise the net present cost of electricity. Two system configurations, (1) PV-EV and (2) PV-BES-EV, are investigated for optimal sizing of PV and BES by creating new rule-based home energy management systems. The uncertainties of EV availability (arrival and departure times) and its initial state of charge, when arrives home, are incorporated using stochastic functions. The effect of popular EV models in the market is investigated on the optimal sizing and electricity cost of the customers. Several sensitivity analyses are adopted based on variations in the grid constrains, retail price and feed in tariff. Uncertainty analysis is provided based on the variations of insolation, temperature, and load to approve the optimal results of the developed model. A practical guideline is presented for residential customers in a typical grid-connected household to select the optimal capacity of PV or PV-BES system considering the model of EV. While the proposed optimization model is general and can be used for various case studies, real annual data of solar insolation, temperature, household\u27s load, electricity prices, as well as PV and BES market data are used for an Australian case study. The developed optimal sizing model is also applied to residential households in different Australian States

The optimal sizing and location of distributed generators (DG) remain crucial factors in their application for active power loss minimization as well as voltage profile improvement. This paper describes an analytical method for the optimal sizing and placement of DG in the Nigerian power network for active power loss minimization. The effectiveness of the proposed method showed a 6.2% reduction in active power losses on the 33kV Nigerian network (i.e. from 92.7MW to 87.0MW). The results showed an improvement in the voltage profile of that six load buses whose voltages were outside the statutory limit of 0.95 pu≤ Vi ≤ 1.05pu.

Optimal sizing of a parallel PHEV powertrain

Abstract—This paper introduces a novel method for the simultaneous optimization of energy management and powertrain component sizing of a parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem to minimize an objective function, which is a weighted sum of operational and component costs. The operational cost includes the consumed fossil fuel and electrical energy, whereas the component cost includes the cost of the battery, electric motor (EM), and internal combustion engine (ICE). The powertrain model includes quadratic losses for the powertrain components. Moreover, the combustion engine and the electric motor losses are assumed to linearly scale with respect to the size and the losses of baseline components. The result of the optimization is the variables of the global optimal energy management for every time instant and optimal component sizes. Due to the dependency of the result on the driving cycle, a long real-life cycle with its charging times is chosen to represent a general driving pattern. The method allows the study of the effect of some performance requirements, i.e., acceleration, top speed, and all-electric range, on the component sizes and total cost

A simple strategy to optimally design and manage a photovoltaic plant integrated with a storage system for different applications

    Get PDF
The main goal of the present paper is that of proposing a methodology for the optimal sizing of a Photovoltaic (PV) unit and a Storage (ST) device, basing on data concerning typical load and PV production profiles. To achieve this result, a set of simple requirements to manage the charging/discharging of the storage is firstly proposed. Then, the overall cost of the whole system is deduced as a function of two variables (PV and ST sizes) and minimized in order to find the optimal sizing of the system. Finally, an economic analysis is presented to determine whether or not the investment is profitable

Optimization of DC - DC boost converter using fuzzy logic controller

    Get PDF
DC-DC converters are electronic devices used to change DC electrical power efficiently from one voltage level to another. Operation of the switching devices causes the inherently nonlinear characteristic of the DC-DC converters including one known as the Boost converter. Consequently, this converter requires a controller with a high degree of dynamic response. Proportional-Integral- Differential (PID) controllers have been usually applied to the converters because of their simplicity. However, the main drawback of PID controller is unable to adapt and approach the best performance when applied to nonlinear system. It will sufer from dynamic response, produces overshoot, longer rise time and settling time which in turn will influenced the output voltage regulation of the Boost converter. Therefore, the implementation of practical Fuzzy Logic controller that will deal to the issue must be investigated. Fuzzy logic controller using voltage output as feedback for significantly improving the dynamic performance of boost dc-dc converter by using MATLAB@Simulink software. The design and calculation of the components especially for the inductor has been done to ensure the converter operates in continuous conduction mode. The evaluation of the output has been carried out and compared by software simulation using MATLAB software between the open loop and closed loop circuit between fuzzy logic control (FLC) and PID control. The simulation results are shown that voltage output is able to be control in steady state condition for DC-DC boost converter by using this methodology. Scope of this project limited only one types that is Triangle membership function for fuzzy logic control
