Parallel Algorithms for Summing Floating-Point Numbers
The problem of exactly summing n floating-point numbers is a fundamental
problem that has many applications in large-scale simulations and computational
geometry. Unfortunately, due to the round-off error in standard floating-point
operations, this problem becomes very challenging. Moreover, all existing
solutions rely on sequential algorithms which cannot scale to the huge datasets
that need to be processed.
In this paper, we provide several efficient parallel algorithms for summing n
floating point numbers, so as to produce a faithfully rounded floating-point
representation of the sum. We present algorithms in PRAM, external-memory, and
MapReduce models, and we also provide an experimental analysis of our MapReduce
algorithms, due to their simplicity and practical efficiency.Comment: Conference version appears in SPAA 201
Parallel Weighted Random Sampling
Data structures for efficient sampling from a set of weighted items are an important building block of many applications. However, few parallel solutions are known. We close many of these gaps both for shared-memory and distributed-memory machines. We give efficient, fast, and practicable algorithms for sampling single items, k items with/without replacement, permutations, subsets, and reservoirs. We also give improved sequential algorithms for alias table construction and for sampling with replacement. Experiments on shared-memory parallel machines with up to 158 threads show near linear speedups both for construction and queries
Theoretically Efficient Parallel Graph Algorithms Can Be Fast and Scalable
There has been significant recent interest in parallel graph processing due
to the need to quickly analyze the large graphs available today. Many graph
codes have been designed for distributed memory or external memory. However,
today even the largest publicly-available real-world graph (the Hyperlink Web
graph with over 3.5 billion vertices and 128 billion edges) can fit in the
memory of a single commodity multicore server. Nevertheless, most experimental
work in the literature report results on much smaller graphs, and the ones for
the Hyperlink graph use distributed or external memory. Therefore, it is
natural to ask whether we can efficiently solve a broad class of graph problems
on this graph in memory.
This paper shows that theoretically-efficient parallel graph algorithms can
scale to the largest publicly-available graphs using a single machine with a
terabyte of RAM, processing them in minutes. We give implementations of
theoretically-efficient parallel algorithms for 20 important graph problems. We
also present the optimizations and techniques that we used in our
implementations, which were crucial in enabling us to process these large
graphs quickly. We show that the running times of our implementations
outperform existing state-of-the-art implementations on the largest real-world
graphs. For many of the problems that we consider, this is the first time they
have been solved on graphs at this scale. We have made the implementations
developed in this work publicly-available as the Graph-Based Benchmark Suite

Adaptive MapReduce Similarity Joins
Similarity joins are a fundamental database operation. Given data sets S and
R, the goal of a similarity join is to find all points x in S and y in R with
distance at most r. Recent research has investigated how locality-sensitive
hashing (LSH) can be used for similarity join, and in particular two recent
lines of work have made exciting progress on LSH-based join performance. Hu,
Tao, and Yi (PODS 17) investigated joins in a massively parallel setting,
showing strong results that adapt to the size of the output. Meanwhile, Ahle,
Aum\"uller, and Pagh (SODA 17) showed a sequential algorithm that adapts to the
structure of the data, matching classic bounds in the worst case but improving
them significantly on more structured data. We show that this adaptive strategy
can be adapted to the parallel setting, combining the advantages of these
approaches. In particular, we show that a simple modification to Hu et al.'s
algorithm achieves bounds that depend on the density of points in the dataset
as well as the total outsize of the output. Our algorithm uses no extra
parameters over other LSH approaches (in particular, its execution does not
depend on the structure of the dataset), and is likely to be efficient in
practice
Cache-Oblivious Peeling of Random Hypergraphs
The computation of a peeling order in a randomly generated hypergraph is the
most time-consuming step in a number of constructions, such as perfect hashing
schemes, random -SAT solvers, error-correcting codes, and approximate set
encodings. While there exists a straightforward linear time algorithm, its poor
I/O performance makes it impractical for hypergraphs whose size exceeds the
available internal memory.
We show how to reduce the computation of a peeling order to a small number of
sequential scans and sorts, and analyze its I/O complexity in the
cache-oblivious model. The resulting algorithm requires
I/Os and time to peel a random hypergraph with edges.
We experimentally evaluate the performance of our implementation of this
algorithm in a real-world scenario by using the construction of minimal perfect
hash functions (MPHF) as our test case: our algorithm builds a MPHF of
billion keys in less than hours on a single machine. The resulting data
structure is both more space-efficient and faster than that obtained with the
current state-of-the-art MPHF construction for large-scale key sets
