Light field geometry of a standard plenoptic camera
The Standard Plenoptic Camera (SPC) is an innovation in photography, allowing for acquiring two-dimensional images focused at different depths, from a single exposure. Contrary to conventional cameras, the SPC consists of a micro lens array and a main lens projecting virtual lenses into object space. For the first time, the present research provides an approach to estimate the distance and depth of refocused images extracted from captures obtained by an SPC. Furthermore, estimates for the position and baseline of virtual lenses which correspond to an equivalent camera array are derived. On the basis of paraxial approximation, a ray tracing model employing linear equations has been developed and implemented using Matlab. The optics simulation tool Zemax is utilized for validation purposes. By designing a realistic SPC, experiments demonstrate that a predicted image refocusing distance at 3.5 m deviates by less than 11% from the simulation in Zemax, whereas baseline estimations indicate no significant difference. Applying the proposed methodology will enable an alternative to the traditional depth map acquisition by disparity analysis.European commisio
A Fourier-based Solving Approach for the Transport of Intensity Equation without Typical Restrictions
The Transport-of-Intensity equation (TIE) has been proven as a standard
approach for phase retrieval. Some high efficiency solving methods for the TIE,
extensively used in many works, are based on a Fourier-Transform (FT). However,
to solve the TIE by these methods several assumptions have to be made. A common
assumption is that there are no zero values for the intensity distribution
allowed. The two most widespread Fourier-based approaches have further
restrictions. One of these requires the uniformity of the intensity
distribution and the other assumes the collinearity of the intensity and phase
gradients. In this paper, we present an approach, which does not need any of
these assumptions and consequently extends the application domain of the TIE

based on a traveling-wave Mach¿Zehnder interferometer with two 500 μm long slow wave phase shifters. 40 Gb ∕ s
operation with 6.6 dB extinction ratio at quadrature and with an on-chip insertion loss of only 6 dB is shown. These
results confirm the benefits of slow light as a means to enhance the performance of silicon modulators based on the

Evaluation scheme for the design of high power single mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers
A very simple and efficient evaluation procedure is suggested for the design
of high power single mode VCSELs by reviewing the physical mechanisms that
governs mode transition and simplifying the computation steps. In addition, the
new structures are proposed and tested following the suggested evaluation
procedure. As a result, the proposed design exhibits much better stability of

Transformation bending device emulated by graded-index waveguide
We demonstrate that a transformation device can be emulated using a
gradient-index waveguide. The effective index of the waveguide is spatially
varied by tailoring a gradient thickness dielectric waveguide. Based on this
technology, we demonstrate a transformation device guiding visible light around
a sharp corner, with low scattering loss and reflection loss. The experimental

Nonlinear Effects in Multi-Photon Polaritonics
We consider theoretically nonlinear effects in a semiconductor quantum well
embedded inside a photonic microcavity. Two-photon absorption by a 2p exciton
state is considered and investigated; the matrix element of two-photon
absorption is calculated. We compute the emission spectrum of the sample and
demonstrate that under coherent pumping the nonlinearity of the two photon
