    Advanced sensors technology survey

    This project assesses the state-of-the-art in advanced or 'smart' sensors technology for NASA Life Sciences research applications with an emphasis on those sensors with potential applications on the space station freedom (SSF). The objectives are: (1) to conduct literature reviews on relevant advanced sensor technology; (2) to interview various scientists and engineers in industry, academia, and government who are knowledgeable on this topic; (3) to provide viewpoints and opinions regarding the potential applications of this technology on the SSF; and (4) to provide summary charts of relevant technologies and centers where these technologies are being developed

    Development of a wind turbine condition monitoring facility for drivetrain torsional dynamics investigations

    Maintenance can be performed according to one of two strategies, failure based or condition based. In most cases, where large and expensive assets such as wind turbines are operated on a continuous basis, condition based maintenance is preferred. However, condition based maintenance relies on the continuous and accurate gathering of condition-information of the particular machine and its various components. This dissertation reports the experimental and numerical work performed as part of the development of an experimental facility that will allow the development of condition monitoring techniques for wind turbines. This work is focussed on the torsional dynamics of a wind turbine setup. A physical setup, consisting of a 1.6 m diameter turbine, a 1:1. ̇ speed-multiplication gearbox, and a 24 Volt direct current generator is built. All of it is mounted within an open-return wind tunnel, which is also designed and built as part of this work. The following two cost-effective experimental techniques are used to measure the torsional natural frequencies: a shaft encoder tachometer from which instantaneous rotational frequency is obtained, and power signal analysis, where the generated voltage is recorded and analysed. It is shown how an algorithm developed by Diamond et al. (2016) is used for the shaft encoder geometry compensation. Frequency spectra based on Fourier transforms and short time Fourier transforms are used to identify harmonic frequencies. Both measurement techniques proves useful to identify not only natural frequencies of torsional vibration, but also various characteristic frequencies of the drivetrain such as shaft rotation, blade pass, gear mesh and generator armature. It is found that power signal analysis is more useful to identify the characteristic frequencies. Torsional dynamics of the drivetrain and its components are also investigated with the following two numerical methods: an eight-degree-of-freedom torsional Lumped Mass Model (LMM), and a three-dimensional Finite Element Model (FEM). Torsional mode shapes and frequencies are calculated with both methods and a good agreement is found in the lower four modes. Numerical results are then compared with the experimental results, where there is also good agreement in the lower four modes. Model updating is performed on the FEM and by changing the torsional stiffness of the flexible couplings, the difference between measured and calculated natural frequencies are reduced to less than 6 %. It is concluded that future models should address lateral vibration of the drivetrain and the support structure.     Improving the profitability, availability and condition monitoring of FPSO terminals

    The main focus of this study is to improve the profitability, availability and condition monitoring of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Floating Production Storage and Offloading platforms (FPSOs). Propane pre-cooled, mixed refrigerant (C3MR) liquefaction is the key process in the production of LNG on FPSOs. LNG liquefaction system equipment has the highest failure rates among the other FPSO equipment, and thus the highest maintenance cost. Improvements in the profitability, availability and condition monitoring were made in two ways: firstly, by making recommendations for the use of redundancy in order to improve system reliability (and hence availability); and secondly, by developing an effective condition-monitoring algorithm that can be used as part of a condition-based maintenance system. C3MR liquefaction system reliability modelling was undertaken using the time-dependent Markov approach. Four different system options were studied, with varying degrees of redundancy. The results of the reliability analysis indicated that the introduction of a standby liquefaction system could be the best option for liquefaction plants in terms of reliability, availability and profitability; this is because the annual profits of medium-sized FPSOs (3MTPA) were estimated to increase by approximately US296million,risingfromaboutUS296 million, rising from about US1,190 million to US1,485.98million,ifredundancywereimplemented.Thecost−benefitanalysisresultswerebasedontheaverageLNGprices(US1,485.98 million, if redundancy were implemented. The cost-benefit analysis results were based on the average LNG prices (US500/ton) in 2013 and 2014. Typically, centrifugal turbines, compressors and blowers are the main items of equipment in LNG liquefaction plants. Because centrifugal equipment tops the FPSO equipment failure list, a Condition Monitoring (CM) system for such equipment was proposed and tested to reduce maintenance and shutdown costs, and also to reduce flaring. The proposed CM system was based on a novel FFT-based segmentation, feature selection and fault identification algorithm. A 20 HP industrial air compressor system with a rotational speed of 15,650 RPM was utilised to experimentally emulate five different typical centrifugal equipment machine conditions in the laboratory; this involved training and testing the proposed algorithm with a total of 105 datasets. The fault diagnosis performance of the algorithm was compared with other methods, namely standard FFT classifiers and Neural Network. A sensitivity analysis was performed in order to determine the effect of the time length and position of the signals on the diagnostic performance of the proposed fault identification algorithm. The algorithm was also checked for its ability to identify machine degradation using datasets for which the algorithm was not trained. Moreover, a characterisation table that prioritises the different fault detection techniques and signal features for the diagnosis of centrifugal equipment faults, was introduced to determine the best fault identification technique and signal feature. The results suggested that the proposed automated feature selection and fault identification algorithm is effective and competitive as it yielded a fault identification performance of 100% in 3.5 seconds only in comparison to 57.2 seconds for NN. The sensitivity analysis showed that the algorithm is robust as its fault identification performance was affected by neither the time length nor the position of signals. The characterisation study demonstrated the effectiveness of the AE spectral feature technique over the fault identification techniques and signal features tested in the course of diagnosing centrifugal equipment faults. Moreover, the algorithm performed well in the identification of machine degradation. In summary, the results of this study indicate that the proposed two-pronged approach has the potential to yield a highly reliable LNG liquefaction system with significantly improved availability and profitability profiles

    Plenoptic Signal Processing for Robust Vision in Field Robotics

    This thesis proposes the use of plenoptic cameras for improving the robustness and simplicity of machine vision in field robotics applications. Dust, rain, fog, snow, murky water and insufficient light can cause even the most sophisticated vision systems to fail. Plenoptic cameras offer an appealing alternative to conventional imagery by gathering significantly more light over a wider depth of field, and capturing a rich 4D light field structure that encodes textural and geometric information. The key contributions of this work lie in exploring the properties of plenoptic signals and developing algorithms for exploiting them. It lays the groundwork for the deployment of plenoptic cameras in field robotics by establishing a decoding, calibration and rectification scheme appropriate to compact, lenslet-based devices. Next, the frequency-domain shape of plenoptic signals is elaborated and exploited by constructing a filter which focuses over a wide depth of field rather than at a single depth. This filter is shown to reject noise, improving contrast in low light and through attenuating media, while mitigating occluders such as snow, rain and underwater particulate matter. Next, a closed-form generalization of optical flow is presented which directly estimates camera motion from first-order derivatives. An elegant adaptation of this "plenoptic flow" to lenslet-based imagery is demonstrated, as well as a simple, additive method for rendering novel views. Finally, the isolation of dynamic elements from a static background is considered, a task complicated by the non-uniform apparent motion caused by a mobile camera. Two elegant closed-form solutions are presented dealing with monocular time-series and light field image pairs. This work emphasizes non-iterative, noise-tolerant, closed-form, linear methods with predictable and constant runtimes, making them suitable for real-time embedded implementation in field robotics applications
