    Strategies for sustainable socio-economic development and mechanisms their implementation in the global dimension

    The authors of the book have come to the conclusion that it is necessary to effectively use modern approaches to developing and implementation strategies of sustainable socio-economic development in order to increase efficiency and competitiveness of economic entities. Basic research focuses on economic diagnostics of socio-economic potential and financial results of economic entities, transition period in the economy of individual countries and ensuring their competitiveness, assessment of educational processes and knowledge management. The research results have been implemented in the different models and strategies of supply and logistics management, development of non-profit organizations, competitiveness of tourism and transport, financing strategies for small and medium-sized enterprises, cross-border cooperation. The results of the study can be used in decision-making at the level the economic entities in different areas of activity and organizational-legal forms of ownership, ministries and departments that promote of development the economic entities on the basis of models and strategies for sustainable socio-economic development. The results can also be used by students and young scientists in modern concepts and mechanisms for management of sustainable socio-economic development of economic entities in the condition of global economic transformations and challenges

    Design and characterization of a novel perfusion reactor for biopharmaceuticals production

    The demand for commercially valuable biopharmaceuticals able to treat different immunopathological diseases has accelerated in the last few decades. In recent years the industry has shifted the preferred mode of operation towards continuous strategies and has favoured the adoption of perfusion approaches for the cell culture step. In this mode successful perfusion process examples have reached up to 10-fold higher cell densities and product titres than fed-batch, while maintaining product quality at reduced costs. Perfusion processes are operated at high cell densities where cells are retained, while product and waste are continuously removed. This leads to different requirements in flow and mixing in comparison to lower cell density operations, potentially influencing the cellular production performance and therefore product quality. As the pharmaceutical industry is highly regulated, ensuring homogeneity in the bulk throughout the process is critical, while oxygen and mixing requirements of high cell density cultures must be continuously met. This paper presents the design and characterization of a novel 250 mL stirred tank reactor (STR) developed to work in perfusion mode. The results presented include the experimental measurement of the power consumption, the mixing analysis of the flow within the bioreactor which informs design consideration and scaling efforts and the biological data of the perfusion stage with an industrially relevant cell line producing an IgG monoclonal antibody. The characterization allows the operating window of the reactor to be established, resulting in increased productivity of intensified cultures

    Latecomers’ science-based catch-up in transition: the case of the Korean pharmaceutical industry

    This thesis investigates the 25-year transitional process of the Korean pharmaceutical industry from its initial focus on the imitative production of generic drugs to the development of new drugs. The catch-up dynamics of latecomer countries in science-intensive industries, such as the pharmaceutical industry, is an overlooked research topic in existing literature on innovation studies. This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of Korea’s science-intensive catch-up and applies an ‘exploration and exploitation’ framework to a latecomer setting and in a novel institutional and market context of the transitional phase. This thesis argues that the rate of change in the transition from imitating drugs to developing new drugs depends on the institutional and organisational mechanisms that enable a new form of technological learning, termed ‘exploratory learning’. This form of learning is often unfamiliar to firms in latecomer countries, whereas it is necessary for producing innovative drugs. That is, latecomers’ institutional and organisational promotion of exploratory learning is related to a ‘pattern change’ in the previously established institutional and organisational routines associated with imitative learning. The findings show that the rate of industrial transition in this sector was constrained by the problematic operation of S&T policies promoting key characteristics of exploratory learning, such as high-risk long-term learning as well as dense interactions between a diverse number of innovation actors. The findings also illuminate some latecomer firms’ initial difficulties in managing the new mode of technological learning, and in strategically applying that mode of learning to overcome the barriers to moving through the transitional phase towards producing competitive innovation. The thesis also suggests that the nature of drugs as integral products, deeply grounded in science, makes it difficult to effectively promote institutional and organisational transformations in favour of exploratory learning

    Managerial satisfaction with subsidiary performance; the influence of the parent MNE's capabilities and the subsidiary's environment

    Multinational enterprise performance is one of the most researched topics in the strategic management literature over the last thirty years. Despite the proliferation of studies, the dispute over the relation between firms’ international investment activities and corporate performance has not yet reached a consensus. This paper’s contribution is threefold. First, we focus on entry by West European multinational enterprises into Central and East European countries. Second, we develop a multi-theory argument, combining insights from transaction cost, new institutional, behavioral, resource-based and international strategy theories. Third, we estimate the determinants of managerial satisfaction with subsidiary performance with questionnaire data for a sample of 198 subsidiaries.

    Una nueva capa de protección a través de súper alarmas con capacidad de diagnóstico

    An alarm management methodology can be proposed as a discrete event sequence recognition problem where time patterns are used to identify the process safe condition, especially in the start-up and shutdown stages. Industrial plants, particularly in the petrochemical, energy, and chemical sectors, require a combined approach of all the events that can result in a catastrophic accident. This document introduces a new layer of protection (super-alarm) for industrial processes based on a diagnostic stage. Alarms and actions of the standard operating procedure are considered discrete events involved in sequences, where the diagnostic stage corresponds to the recognition of a special situation when these sequences occur. This is meant to provide operators with pertinent information regarding the normal or abnormal situations induced by the flow of alarms. Chronicles Based Alarm Management (CBAM) is the methodology used to build the chronicles that will permit to generate the super-alarms furthermore, a case study of the petrochemical sector using CBAM is presented to build the chronicles of the normal startup, abnormal start-up, and normal shutdown scenarios. Finally, the scenario validation is performed for an abnormal start-up, showing how a super-alarm is generated.Se puede formular una metodología de gestión de alarmas como un problema de reconocimiento de secuencia de eventos discretos en el que se utilizan patrones de tiempo para identificar la condición segura del proceso, especialmente en las etapas de arranque y parada de planta. Las plantas industriales, particularmente en las industrias petroquímica, energética y química, requieren una administración combinada de todos los eventos que pueden producir un accidente catastrófico. En este documento, se introduce una nueva capa de protección (súper alarma) a los procesos industriales basados en una etapa de diagnóstico. Las alarmas y las acciones estándar del procedimiento operativo son asumidas como eventos discretos involucrados en las secuencias, luego la etapa de diagnóstico corresponde al reconocimiento de la situación cuando ocurren estas secuencias. Esto proporciona a los operadores información pertinente sobre las situaciones normales o anormales inducidas por el flujo de alarmas. La gestión de alarmas basadas en crónicas (CBAM) es la metodología utilizada en este artículo para construir las crónicas que permitirán generar las super alarmas, además, se presenta un caso de estudio del sector petroquímico que usa CBAM para construir las crónicas de los escenarios de un arranque normal, un arranque anormal y un apagado normal. Finalmente, la validación del escenario se realiza para un arranque anormal, mostrando cómo se genera una súper alarma
