Measurement of SIFT operating system overhead
The overhead of the software implemented fault tolerance (SIFT) operating system was measured. Several versions of the operating system evolved. Each version represents different strategies employed to improve the measured performance. Three of these versions are analyzed. The internal data structures of the operating systems are discussed. The overhead of the SIFT operating system was found to be of two types: vote overhead and executive task overhead. Both types of overhead were found to be significant in all versions of the system. Improvements substantially reduced this overhead; even with these improvements, the operating system consumed well over 50% of the available processing time
Improved VHF direction finding system
Direction finding device operating at very high frequencies requires a loop antenna, mechanical rotation, and large structures. The system is applicable to an unmanned configuration. Direction information is extracted in the form of a direction cosine analog
The nature of operating flight loads and their effect on propulsion system structures
Past diagnostics studies revealed the primary causes of performance deterioration of high by-pass turbofan engines to be flight loads, erosion, and thermal distortion. The various types of airplane loads that are imposed on the engine throughout the lifetime of an airplane are examined. These include flight loads from gusts and maneuvers and ground loads from takeoff, landing, and taxi conditions. Clarification is made in definitions of the airframer's limit and ultimate design loads and the engine manufacturer's operating design loads. Finally, the influence of these loads on the propulsion system structures is discussed
BAG : Managing GPU as buffer cache in operating systems
This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of BAG, a system that manages GPU as the buffer cache in operating systems. Unlike previous uses of GPUs, which have focused on the computational capabilities of GPUs, BAG is designed to explore a new dimension in managing GPUs in heterogeneous systems where the GPU memory is an exploitable but always ignored resource. With the carefully designed data structures and algorithms, such as concurrent hashtable, log-structured data store for the management of GPU memory, and highly-parallel GPU kernels for garbage collection, BAG achieves good performance under various workloads. In addition, leveraging the existing abstraction of the operating system not only makes the implementation of BAG non-intrusive, but also facilitates the system deployment
The near wall effect of synthetic jets in a boundary layer
Copyright @ 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. An experimental investigation to analyse the qualitative near wall effect of synthetic jets in a laminar boundary layer has been undertaken for the purpose of identifying the types of vortical structures likely to have delayed separation on a 2D circular cylinder model described in this paper. In the first instance, dye visualisation of the synthetic jet was facilitated in conjunction with a stereoscopic imaging system to provide a unique quasi three-dimensional identification of the vortical structures. Secondly, the impact of synthetic jet structures along the wall was analysed using a thermochromic liquid crystal-based convective heat transfer sensing system in which, liquid crystals change colour in response to the thermal footprints of a passing flow structure. Of the different vortical structures produced as a result of varying actuator operating and freestream conditions, the footprints of hairpin vortices and stretched vortex rings revealed a marked similarity with the oil flow pattern of a vortex pair interacting with the separation line on the cylinder hence suggesting that either of these structures was responsible in delaying separation. Conditions were established for the formation of the different synthetic jet structures in non-dimensional parameter space
Probabilistic structural analysis algorithm development for computational efficiency
The PSAM (Probabilistic Structural Analysis Methods) program is developing a probabilistic structural risk assessment capability for the SSME components. An advanced probabilistic structural analysis software system, NESSUS (Numerical Evaluation of Stochastic Structures Under Stress), is being developed as part of the PSAM effort to accurately simulate stochastic structures operating under severe random loading conditions. One of the challenges in developing the NESSUS system is the development of the probabilistic algorithms that provide both efficiency and accuracy. The main probability algorithms developed and implemented in the NESSUS system are efficient, but approximate in nature. In the last six years, the algorithms have improved very significantly
Flooding attacks to internet threat monitors (ITM): Modeling and counter measures using botnet and honeypots
The Internet Threat Monitoring (ITM),is a globally scoped Internet monitoring
system whose goal is to measure, detect, characterize, and track threats such
as distribute denial of service(DDoS) attacks and worms. To block the
monitoring system in the internet the attackers are targeted the ITM system. In
this paper we address flooding attack against ITM system in which the attacker
attempt to exhaust the network and ITM's resources, such as network bandwidth,
computing power, or operating system data structures by sending the malicious
traffic. We propose an information-theoretic frame work that models the
flooding attacks using Botnet on ITM. Based on this model we generalize the
flooding attacks and propose an effective attack detection using Honeypots
Designing strain-balanced GaN/AlGaN quantum well structures: Application to intersubband devices at 1.3 and 1.55 mu m wavelengths
A criterion for strain balancing of wurtzite group-III nitride-based multilayer heterostructures is presented. Single and double strain-balanced GaN/AlGaN quantum well structures are considered with regard to their potential application in optoelectronic devices working at communication wavelengths. The results for realizable, strain-balanced structures are presented in the form of design diagrams that give both the intersubband transition energies and the dipole matrix elements in terms of the structural parameters. The optimal parameters for structures operating at lambda ~1.3 and 1.55 µm were extracted and a basic proposal is given for a three level intersubband laser system emitting at 1.55µm and depopulating via resonant longitudinal optical(LO)phonons (h omega(LO)approximate to 90 meV). © 2003 American Institute of Physics
