One-pass adaptive universal vector quantization
The authors introduce a one-pass adaptive universal quantization technique for real, bounded alphabet, stationary sources. The algorithm is set on line without any prior knowledge of the statistics of the sources which it might encounter and asymptotically achieves ideal performance on all sources that it sees. The system consists of an encoder and a decoder. At increasing intervals, the encoder refines its codebook using knowledge about incoming data symbols. This codebook is then described to the decoder in the form of updates on the previous codebook. The accuracy to which the codebook is described increases as the number of symbols seen, and thus the accuracy to which the codebook is known, grows
Locally adaptive vector quantization: Data compression with feature preservation
A study of a locally adaptive vector quantization (LAVQ) algorithm for data compression is presented. This algorithm provides high-speed one-pass compression and is fully adaptable to any data source and does not require a priori knowledge of the source statistics. Therefore, LAVQ is a universal data compression algorithm. The basic algorithm and several modifications to improve performance are discussed. These modifications are nonlinear quantization, coarse quantization of the codebook, and lossless compression of the output. Performance of LAVQ on various images using irreversible (lossy) coding is comparable to that of the Linde-Buzo-Gray algorithm, but LAVQ has a much higher speed; thus this algorithm has potential for real-time video compression. Unlike most other image compression algorithms, LAVQ preserves fine detail in images. LAVQ's performance as a lossless data compression algorithm is comparable to that of Lempel-Ziv-based algorithms, but LAVQ uses far less memory during the coding process
Rates of convergence in adaptive universal vector quantization
We consider the problem of adaptive universal quantization. By adaptive quantization we mean quantization for which the delay associated with encoding the jth sample in a sequence of length n is bounded for all n>j. We demonstrate the existence of an adaptive universal quantization algorithm for which any weighted sum of the rate and the expected mean square error converges almost surely and in expectation as O(√(log log n/log n)) to the corresponding weighted sum of the rate and the distortion-rate function at that rate
Data compression techniques applied to high resolution high frame rate video technology
An investigation is presented of video data compression applied to microgravity space experiments using High Resolution High Frame Rate Video Technology (HHVT). An extensive survey of methods of video data compression, described in the open literature, was conducted. The survey examines compression methods employing digital computing. The results of the survey are presented. They include a description of each method and assessment of image degradation and video data parameters. An assessment is made of present and near term future technology for implementation of video data compression in high speed imaging system. Results of the assessment are discussed and summarized. The results of a study of a baseline HHVT video system, and approaches for implementation of video data compression, are presented. Case studies of three microgravity experiments are presented and specific compression techniques and implementations are recommended
Approximation algorithms for wavelet transform coding of data streams
This paper addresses the problem of finding a B-term wavelet representation
of a given discrete function whose distance from f is
minimized. The problem is well understood when we seek to minimize the
Euclidean distance between f and its representation. The first known algorithms
for finding provably approximate representations minimizing general
distances (including ) under a wide variety of compactly supported
wavelet bases are presented in this paper. For the Haar basis, a polynomial
time approximation scheme is demonstrated. These algorithms are applicable in
the one-pass sublinear-space data stream model of computation. They generalize
naturally to multiple dimensions and weighted norms. A universal representation
that provides a provable approximation guarantee under all p-norms
simultaneously; and the first approximation algorithms for bit-budget versions
of the problem, known as adaptive quantization, are also presented. Further, it
is shown that the algorithms presented here can be used to select a basis from
a tree-structured dictionary of bases and find a B-term representation of the
given function that provably approximates its best dictionary-basis
representation.Comment: Added a universal representation that provides a provable
approximation guarantee under all p-norms simultaneousl
SAR data compression: Application, requirements, and designs
The feasibility of reducing data volume and data rate is evaluated for the Earth Observing System (EOS) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). All elements of data stream from the sensor downlink data stream to electronic delivery of browse data products are explored. The factors influencing design of a data compression system are analyzed, including the signal data characteristics, the image quality requirements, and the throughput requirements. The conclusion is that little or no reduction can be achieved in the raw signal data using traditional data compression techniques (e.g., vector quantization, adaptive discrete cosine transform) due to the induced phase errors in the output image. However, after image formation, a number of techniques are effective for data compression
