To make a nanomechanical Schr\"{o}dinger-cat mew
By an explicite calculation of Michelson interferometric output intensities
in the optomechanical scheme proposed by Marshall et al. (2003), an oscillatory
factor is obtained that may go down to zero just at the time a visibility
revival ought to be observed. Including a properly tuned phase shifter offers a
simple amendment to the situation. By using a Pockels phase shifter with fast
time-dependent modulation in one arm, one may obtain further possibilities to
enrich the quantum state preparation and reconstruction abilities of the
original scheme, thereby improving the chances to reliably detect genuine
quantum behaviour of a nanomechanical oscillator.Comment: For Proc. DICE-2010 (Castiglioncello), to be published in J. Phys.

Comparative Advertising: disclosing horizontal match information
Improved consumer information about (symmetric) products can lead to better matching but also higher prices, so consumer surplus can go up or down, while profits rise. With enough firm asymmetry though, the stronger firm's price falls with more information, so both effects benefit consumers. This is when comparative advertising is used, against a large firm by a small one. Comparative advertising, as it imparts more information, therefore helps consumers. While it also improves profitability of the small firm, overall welfare goes down because of the large loss to the attacked firm.comparative advertising, information, product differentiation, quality
How Emotions Affect Farm and Ranch Succession
Whenever a family has a discussion about agricultural estate planning, conversations can become emotionally charged. Stakes can be high and feelings can be hurt just by using the wrong words in a sentence. If things go south and parties are upset, they will likely withdraw from the dialogue or leave the gathering altogether.
When communications or negotiations break down, one way to help is to think about the five emotional blocks that need to be overcome if possible. They are: appreciation, affiliation, autonomy, status and role. Let\u27s examine each to see how these blockages can interfere with a family moving forward
Onset of entanglement
We have developed a theory of polymer entanglement using an extended
Cahn-Hilliard functional, with two extra terms. One is a nonlocal attractive
term, operating over mesoscales, which is interpreted as giving rise to
entanglement, and the other a local repulsive term indicative of excluded
volume interactions. We show how such a functional can be derived using notions
from gauge theory. We go beyond the Gaussian approximation, to the one-loop
level, to show that the system exhibits a crossover to a state of entanglement
as the average chain length between points of entanglement decreases. This
crossover is marked by critical slowing down, as the effective diffusion
constant goes to zero. We have also computed the tensile modulus of the system,
and we find a corresponding crossover to a regime of high modulus.Comment: 18 pages, with 4 figure
