Strongly Monotone Drawings of Planar Graphs
A straight-line drawing of a graph is a monotone drawing if for each pair of
vertices there is a path which is monotonically increasing in some direction,
and it is called a strongly monotone drawing if the direction of monotonicity
is given by the direction of the line segment connecting the two vertices.
We present algorithms to compute crossing-free strongly monotone drawings for
some classes of planar graphs; namely, 3-connected planar graphs, outerplanar
graphs, and 2-trees. The drawings of 3-connected planar graphs are based on
primal-dual circle packings. Our drawings of outerplanar graphs are based on a
new algorithm that constructs strongly monotone drawings of trees which are
also convex. For irreducible trees, these drawings are strictly convex
Cubic Partial Cubes from Simplicial Arrangements
We show how to construct a cubic partial cube from any simplicial arrangement
of lines or pseudolines in the projective plane. As a consequence, we find nine
new infinite families of cubic partial cubes as well as many sporadic examples.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
Dichotomy Results for Fixed-Point Existence Problems for Boolean Dynamical Systems
A complete classification of the computational complexity of the fixed-point
existence problem for boolean dynamical systems, i.e., finite discrete
dynamical systems over the domain {0, 1}, is presented. For function classes F
and graph classes G, an (F, G)-system is a boolean dynamical system such that
all local transition functions lie in F and the underlying graph lies in G. Let
F be a class of boolean functions which is closed under composition and let G
be a class of graphs which is closed under taking minors. The following
dichotomy theorems are shown: (1) If F contains the self-dual functions and G
contains the planar graphs then the fixed-point existence problem for (F,
G)-systems with local transition function given by truth-tables is NP-complete;
otherwise, it is decidable in polynomial time. (2) If F contains the self-dual
functions and G contains the graphs having vertex covers of size one then the
fixed-point existence problem for (F, G)-systems with local transition function
given by formulas or circuits is NP-complete; otherwise, it is decidable in
polynomial time.Comment: 17 pages; this version corrects an error/typo in the 2008/01/24

Steinitz Theorems for Orthogonal Polyhedra
We define a simple orthogonal polyhedron to be a three-dimensional polyhedron
with the topology of a sphere in which three mutually-perpendicular edges meet
at each vertex. By analogy to Steinitz's theorem characterizing the graphs of
convex polyhedra, we find graph-theoretic characterizations of three classes of
simple orthogonal polyhedra: corner polyhedra, which can be drawn by isometric
projection in the plane with only one hidden vertex, xyz polyhedra, in which
each axis-parallel line through a vertex contains exactly one other vertex, and
arbitrary simple orthogonal polyhedra. In particular, the graphs of xyz
polyhedra are exactly the bipartite cubic polyhedral graphs, and every
bipartite cubic polyhedral graph with a 4-connected dual graph is the graph of
a corner polyhedron. Based on our characterizations we find efficient
algorithms for constructing orthogonal polyhedra from their graphs.Comment: 48 pages, 31 figure
The 1/N expansion of colored tensor models
In this paper we perform the 1/N expansion of the colored three dimensional
Boulatov tensor model. As in matrix models, we obtain a systematic topological
expansion, with more and more complicated topologies suppressed by higher and
higher powers of N. We compute the first orders of the expansion and prove that
only graphs corresponding to three spheres S^3 contribute to the leading order
in the large N limit.Comment: typos corrected, references update
