PID control system analysis, design, and technology
Designing and tuning a proportional-integral-derivative
(PID) controller appears to be conceptually intuitive, but can
be hard in practice, if multiple (and often conflicting) objectives
such as short transient and high stability are to be achieved.
Usually, initial designs obtained by all means need to be adjusted
repeatedly through computer simulations until the closed-loop
system performs or compromises as desired. This stimulates
the development of "intelligent" tools that can assist engineers
to achieve the best overall PID control for the entire operating
envelope. This development has further led to the incorporation
of some advanced tuning algorithms into PID hardware modules.
Corresponding to these developments, this paper presents a
modern overview of functionalities and tuning methods in patents,
software packages and commercial hardware modules. It is seen
that many PID variants have been developed in order to improve
transient performance, but standardising and modularising PID
control are desired, although challenging. The inclusion of system
identification and "intelligent" techniques in software based PID
systems helps automate the entire design and tuning process to
a useful degree. This should also assist future development of
"plug-and-play" PID controllers that are widely applicable and
can be set up easily and operate optimally for enhanced productivity,
improved quality and reduced maintenance requirements
A Review on Energy Consumption Optimization Techniques in IoT Based Smart Building Environments
In recent years, due to the unnecessary wastage of electrical energy in
residential buildings, the requirement of energy optimization and user comfort
has gained vital importance. In the literature, various techniques have been
proposed addressing the energy optimization problem. The goal of each technique
was to maintain a balance between user comfort and energy requirements such
that the user can achieve the desired comfort level with the minimum amount of
energy consumption. Researchers have addressed the issue with the help of
different optimization algorithms and variations in the parameters to reduce
energy consumption. To the best of our knowledge, this problem is not solved
yet due to its challenging nature. The gap in the literature is due to the
advancements in the technology and drawbacks of the optimization algorithms and
the introduction of different new optimization algorithms. Further, many newly
proposed optimization algorithms which have produced better accuracy on the
benchmark instances but have not been applied yet for the optimization of
energy consumption in smart homes. In this paper, we have carried out a
detailed literature review of the techniques used for the optimization of
energy consumption and scheduling in smart homes. The detailed discussion has
been carried out on different factors contributing towards thermal comfort,
visual comfort, and air quality comfort. We have also reviewed the fog and edge
computing techniques used in smart homes
Fuzzy PD control of an optically guided long reach robot
This thesis describes the investigation and development of a fuzzy controller for a manipulator with a single flexible link. The novelty of this research is due to the fact that the controller devised is suitable for flexible link manipulators with a round cross section. Previous research has concentrated on control of flexible slender structures that are relatively easier to model as the vibration effects of torsion can be ignored. Further novelty arises due to the fact that this is the
first instance of the application of fuzzy control in the optical Tip Feedback Sensor (TFS) based configuration.
A design methodology has been investigated to develop a fuzzy controller suitable for application in a safety critical environment such as the nuclear industry. This methodology provides justification for all the parameters of the fuzzy controller including membership fUllctions, inference and defuzzification techniques and the operators used in the algorithm. Using the novel modified phase plane method investigated in this thesis, it is shown that the derivation of complete, consistent and non-interactive rules can be achieved. This methodology was successfully applied
to the derivation of fuzzy rules even when the arm was subjected to different payloads. The design approach, that targeted real-time embedded control applicat.ions from the outset, results in a controller implementation that is suitable for cheaper CPU constrained and memory challenged
embedded processors.
The controller comprises of a fuzzy supervisor that is used to alter the derivative term of a linear classical Proportional + Derivative (PD) controller. The derivative term is updated in relation to the measured tip error and its derivative obtained through the TFS based configuration. It is shown that by adding 'intelligence' to the control loop in this way, the performance envelope of the classical controller can be enhanced. A 128% increase in payload, 73.5% faster settling time and a reduction of steady state of over 50% is achieved using fuzzy control over its classical counterpart
Autonomous Vehicle Coordination with Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks
A coordinated team of mobile wireless sensor and actuator nodes can bring numerous benefits for various applications in the field of cooperative surveillance, mapping unknown areas, disaster management, automated highway and space exploration. This article explores the idea of mobile nodes using vehicles on wheels, augmented with wireless, sensing, and control capabilities. One of the vehicles acts as a leader, being remotely driven by the user, the others represent the followers. Each vehicle has a low-power wireless sensor node attached, featuring a 3D accelerometer and a magnetic compass. Speed and orientation are computed in real time using inertial navigation techniques. The leader periodically transmits these measures to the followers, which implement a lightweight fuzzy logic controller for imitating the leader's movement pattern. We report in detail on all development phases, covering design, simulation, controller tuning, inertial sensor evaluation, calibration, scheduling, fixed-point computation, debugging, benchmarking, field experiments, and lessons learned
Voltage Stabilization of A DC-Microgrid Using ANFIS Controller Considering Electrical Vehicles and Transient Storage
In this paper, we proposed a DC-microgrid with four main elements for Voltage
stabilization. This research also presented a cost function that will guarantee
the lifecycle of the EVs' battery because we use a Super Capacitor to damp the
transient Ripples of Bus Voltage. This DCMG has four main branches: Ballast,
Random Load, Random Source, and Stabilizer. The Random Source is photovoltaic,
and the Random Load includes consumers. The three first branches make the DCMG
go to the destabilization mode, and the last one has to stabilize its role in
this DCMG. The controller consists of a fuzzy inference system optimized using
PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm, so this controller adjusts the
duty cycle of three main branches in the stabilization branch of this DCMG. It
is a MIMO ANFIS controller, and we compared the results of this controller with
other controllers. In this research, we have designed three scenarios to verify
the results: production more than consumption, vice versa, and equality between
production and consumption. In this paper, the efficiency of this method --
using ANFIS controller -- in comparison with others -- using another type of
controller -- will evaluate under different operating conditions, production
and consumption inequality, and equality.Comment: 19 pages, 27 figure
REAL TIME FUZZY CONTROLLER FOR QUADROTOR STABILITY CONTROL
In this report, we develop an intelligent adaptive neuro-fuzzy controller by using adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) techniques. We begin by starting with a standard proportional-derivative (PD) controller and use the PD controller data to train the ANFIS system to develop a fuzzy controller. We then propose and validate a method to implement this control strategy on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware.
An analysis is made into the choice of filters for attitude estimation. These choices are limited by the complexity of the filter and the computing ability and memory constraints of the micro-controller. Simplified Kalman filters are found to be good at estimation of attitude given the above constraints.
Using model based design techniques, the models are implemented on an embedded system. This enables the deployment of fuzzy controllers on enthusiast-grade controllers. We evaluate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy in a model-in-the-loop simulation. We then propose a rapid prototyping strategy, allowing us to deploy these control algorithms on a system consisting of a combination of an ARM-based microcontroller and two Arduino-based controllers. We then use a combination of the code generation capabilities within MATLAB/Simulink in combination with multiple open-source projects in order to deploy code to an ARM CortexM4 based controller board.
We also evaluate this strategy on an ARM-A8 based board, and a much less powerful Arduino based flight controller. We conclude by proving the feasibility of fuzzy controllers on Commercial-off the shelf (COTS) hardware, we also point out the limitations in the current hardware and make suggestions for hardware that we think would be better suited for memory heavy controllers
