    Network Coding Tree Algorithm for Multiple Access System

    Network coding is famous for significantly improving the throughput of networks. The successful decoding of the network coded data relies on some side information of the original data. In that framework, independent data flows are usually first decoded and then network coded by relay nodes. If appropriate signal design is adopted, physical layer network coding is a natural way in wireless networks. In this work, a network coding tree algorithm which enhances the efficiency of the multiple access system (MAS) is presented. For MAS, existing works tried to avoid the collisions while collisions happen frequently under heavy load. By introducing network coding to MAS, our proposed algorithm achieves a better performance of throughput and delay. When multiple users transmit signal in a time slot, the mexed signals are saved and used to jointly decode the collided frames after some component frames of the network coded frame are received. Splitting tree structure is extended to the new algorithm for collision solving. The throughput of the system and average delay of frames are presented in a recursive way. Besides, extensive simulations show that network coding tree algorithm enhances the system throughput and decreases the average frame delay compared with other algorithms.     Hierarchical Up/Down Routing Architecture for Ethernet backbones and campus networks

    We describe a new layer two distributed and scalable routing architecture. It uses an automatic hierarchical node identifier assignment mechanism associated to the rapid spanning tree protocol. Enhanced up/down mechanisms are used to prohibit some turns at nodes to break cycles, instead of blocking links like the spannning tree protocol does. The protocol performance is similar or better than other turn prohibition algorithms recently proposed with lower complexity O(Nd) and better scalability. Simulations show that the fraction of prohibited turns over random networks is less than 0.2. The effect of root bridge election on the performance of the protocol is limited both in the random and regular networks studied. The use of hierarchical, tree-descriptive addresses simplifies the routing, and avoids the need of all nodes having a global knowleddge of the network topology. Routing frames through the hierarchical tree at very high speed is possible by progressive decoding of frame destination address, without routing tables or port address learning. Coexistence with standard bridges is achieved using combined devices: bridges that forward the frames having global destination MAC addresses as standard bridges and frames with local MAC frames with the proposed protocol.Publicad

    A Mobile Satellite Experiment (MSAT-X) network definition

    The network architecture development of the Mobile Satellite Experiment (MSAT-X) project for the past few years is described. The results and findings of the network research activities carried out under the MSAT-X project are summarized. A framework is presented upon which the Mobile Satellite Systems (MSSs) operator can design a commercial network. A sample network configuration and its capability are also included under the projected scenario. The Communication Interconnection aspect of the MSAT-X network is discussed. In the MSAT-X network structure two basic protocols are presented: the channel access protocol, and the link connection protocol. The error-control techniques used in the MSAT-X project and the packet structure are also discussed. A description of two testbeds developed for experimentally simulating the channel access protocol and link control protocol, respectively, is presented. A sample network configuration and some future network activities of the MSAT-X project are also presented

The design of medium access control (MAC) protocols has been traditionally an intense area of research due to their high impact on the overall performance of wireless communications. The majority of research activities in this field deal with different variations of protocols somehow based on ALOHA, either with or without listen before talk, i.e., carrier sensing multiple access. These protocols operate well under low traffic loads and low number of simultaneous devices. However, they suffer from congestion as the traffic load and the number of devices increase. For this reason, unless revisited, the MAC layer can become a bottleneck for the success of the IoT. In this paper, we provide an overview of the existing MAC solutions for the IoT, describing current limitations and envisioned challenges for the near future. Motivated by those, we identify a family of simple algorithms based on distributed queueing (DQ), which can operate for an infinite number of devices generating any traffic load and pattern. A description of the DQ mechanism is provided and most relevant existing studies of DQ applied in different scenarios are described in this paper. In addition, we provide a novel performance evaluation of DQ when applied for the IoT.
