    A Fair and In-Depth Evaluation of Existing End-to-End Entity Linking Systems

    Existing evaluations of entity linking systems often say little about how the system is going to perform for a particular application. There are four fundamental reasons for this: many benchmarks focus on named entities; it is hard to define which other entities to include; there are ambiguities in entity recognition and entity linking; many benchmarks have errors or artifacts that invite overfitting or lead to evaluation results of limited meaningfulness. We provide a more meaningful and fair in-depth evaluation of a variety of existing end-to-end entity linkers. We characterize the strengths and weaknesses of these linkers and how well the results from the respective publications can be reproduced. Our evaluation is based on several widely used benchmarks, which exhibit the problems mentioned above to various degrees, as well as on two new benchmarks, which address these problems

    Overview of the SPMRL 2013 shared task: cross-framework evaluation of parsing morphologically rich languages

    This paper reports on the first shared task on statistical parsing of morphologically rich languages (MRLs). The task features data sets from nine languages, each available both in constituency and dependency annotation. We report on the preparation of the data sets, on the proposed parsing scenarios, and on the evaluation metrics for parsing MRLs given different representation types. We present and analyze parsing results obtained by the task participants, and then provide an analysis and comparison of the parsers across languages and frameworks, reported for gold input as well as more realistic parsing scenarios

    Self-reference Upfront: A Study of Self-referential G\"odel Numberings

    In this paper we examine various requirements on the formalisation choices under which self-reference can be adequately formalised in arithmetic. In particular, we study self-referential numberings, which immediately provide a strong notion of self-reference even for expressively weak languages. The results of this paper suggest that the question whether truly self-referential reasoning can be formalised in arithmetic is more sensitive to the underlying coding apparatus than usually believed. As a case study, we show how this sensitivity affects the formal study of certain principles of self-referential truth

Participants were asked to build machine translation systems for any of 18 language pairs, to be evaluated on a test set of news stories. The main metric for this task is human judgment of translation quality. The task was also opened up to additional test suites to probe specific aspects of translation

    The square root of negative one: the influence of imaginary numbers on Nicanor Parra’s poem ‘El hombre imaginario’

    This article presents a new and necessary explication of ‘El hombre imaginario’, the most well-known poem of Nicanor Parra, by connecting the repetition of the word imaginario, which is central to the poem, to the symbol i—the square root of negative one—used to represent imaginary numbers. In this interpretation, the poem integrates a cold, sterile element of mathematics into the artful world of antipoetry so seamlessly that this element has gone unnoticed by critics—until now. In the poem, Parra, who was well acquainted with the symbol i—something that this paper carefully proves—uses the modifiers imaginario(s)/a(s) to transpose the meaning of words much in the same way that the symbol i, the imaginary unit, transposes the meaning of numbers. Accordingly, this article attempts to reveal the hidden algebra of the poem, opening an avenue for further interpretation
