DWNs have some periodic behaviours because of the daily seasonality of water demands and electrical energy price. The periodic terminal constraint and economic terminal cost are implemented in the EMPC controller design for the purpose of
achieving convergence. The feasibility of the proposed EMPC strategy when disturbances are considered is guaranteed by means of soft constraints implemented by using slack variables.
Finally, the comparison results in a case study of the D-Town water network is provided by applying the EMPC strategy with or without periodic terminal constraints.Accepted versio
Workload-Based Configuration of MEMS-Based Storage Devices for Mobile Systems
Because of its small form factor, high capacity, and expected low cost, MEMS-based storage is a suitable storage technology for mobile systems. However, flash memory may outperform MEMS-based storage in terms of performance, and energy-efficiency. The problem is that MEMS-based storage devices have a large number (i.e., thousands) of heads, and to deliver peak performance, all heads must be deployed simultaneously to access each single sector. Since these devices are mechanical and thus some housekeeping information is needed for each head, this results in a huge capacity loss and increases the energy consumption of MEMS-based storage with respect to flash.
We solve this problem by proposing new techniques to lay out data in MEMS-based storage devices. Data layouts represent optimizations in a design space spanned by three parameters: the number of active heads, sector parallelism, and sector size. We explore this design space and show that by exploiting knowledge of the expected workload, MEMS-based devices can employ all heads, thus delivering peak performance, while decreasing the energy consumption and compromising only a little on the capacity. Our exploration shows that MEMS-based storage is competitive with flash in most cases, and outperforms flash in a few cases
Efficient Data Compression with Error Bound Guarantee in Wireless Sensor Networks
We present a data compression and dimensionality reduction scheme for data
fusion and aggregation applications to prevent data congestion and reduce
energy consumption at network connecting points such as cluster heads and
gateways. Our in-network approach can be easily tuned to analyze the data
temporal or spatial correlation using an unsupervised neural network scheme,
namely the autoencoders. In particular, our algorithm extracts intrinsic data
features from previously collected historical samples to transform the raw data
into a low dimensional representation. Moreover, the proposed framework
provides an error bound guarantee mechanism. We evaluate the proposed solution
using real-world data sets and compare it with traditional methods for temporal
and spatial data compression. The experimental validation reveals that our
approach outperforms several existing wireless sensor network's data
compression methods in terms of compression efficiency and signal
reconstruction.Comment: ACM MSWiM 201
Numerical study on the internal flow field of a reversible turbine during continuous guide vane closing
The unsteady flow field in a reversible pump-turbine is investigated during the continuous load rejection using a 3D computational fluid dynamic analysis. Numerical calculations are carried out using the detached eddy simulation (DES) turbulence model and a new approach involving automatic mesh motion. In this way, the instability of the flow field is analyzed by continuously changing the guide vane openings from the best efficiency point (BEP). Unsteady flow characteristics are described by post-processing signals for several monitoring points including mass flow, torque, head and pressure in the frequency and time-frequency domains. The formation of vortices of different scales is observed from the origin to further enlargement and stabilization; the effect of the rotating structures on the flow passage is analyzed, and the influence of unsteady flow development on the performance of the turbine is investigated. Finally, the evolution during the period of load rejection is characterized in order to determine the hydrodynamic conditions causing the vibrations in the machine
