Dynamic Clustering in Object-Oriented Databases: An Advocacy for Simplicity
International audienceWe present in this paper three dynamic clustering techniques for Object-Oriented Databases (OODBs). The first two, Dynamic, Statistical & Tunable Clustering (DSTC) and StatClust, exploit both comprehensive usage statistics and the inter-object reference graph. They are quite elaborate. However, they are also complex to implement and induce a high overhead. The third clustering technique, called Detection & Reclustering of Objects (DRO), is based on the same principles, but is much simpler to implement. These three clustering algorithm have been implemented in the Texas persistent object store and compared in terms of clustering efficiency (i.e., overall performance increase) and overhead using the Object Clustering Benchmark (OCB). The results obtained showed that DRO induced a lighter overhead while still achieving better overall performance
Evaluating Merging Strategies for Sampling-based Uncertainty Techniques in Object Detection
There has been a recent emergence of sampling-based techniques for estimating
epistemic uncertainty in deep neural networks. While these methods can be
applied to classification or semantic segmentation tasks by simply averaging
samples, this is not the case for object detection, where detection sample
bounding boxes must be accurately associated and merged. A weak merging
strategy can significantly degrade the performance of the detector and yield an
unreliable uncertainty measure. This paper provides the first in-depth
investigation of the effect of different association and merging strategies. We
compare different combinations of three spatial and two semantic affinity
measures with four clustering methods for MC Dropout with a Single Shot
Multi-Box Detector. Our results show that the correct choice of
affinity-clustering combination can greatly improve the effectiveness of the
classification and spatial uncertainty estimation and the resulting object
detection performance. We base our evaluation on a new mix of datasets that
emulate near open-set conditions (semantically similar unknown classes),
distant open-set conditions (semantically dissimilar unknown classes) and the

Deformable Object Tracking Using Clustering and Particle Filter
Visual tracking of a deformable object is a challenging problem, as the target object frequently changes its attributes like shape, posture, color and so on. In this work, we propose a model-free tracker using clustering to track a target object which poses deformations and rotations. Clustering is applied to segment the tracked object into several independent components and the discriminative parts are tracked to locate the object. The proposed technique segments the target object into independent components using data clustering techniques and then tracks by finding corresponding clusters. Particle filters method is incorporated to improve the accuracy of the proposed technique. Experiments are carried out with several standard data sets, and results demonstrate comparable performance to the state-of-the-art visual tracking methods

Automatic X-ray Image Segmentation and Clustering for Threat Detection
Firearms currently pose a known risk at the borders. The enormous number of X-ray images from parcels, luggage and freight coming into each country via rail, aviation and maritime presents a continual challenge to screening officers. To further improve UK capability and aid officers in their search for firearms we suggest an automated object segmentation and clustering architecture to focus officers’ attentions to high-risk threat objects. Our proposal utilizes dual-view single/ dual-energy 2D X-ray imagery and is a blend of radiology, image processing and computer vision concepts. It consists of a triple-layered processing scheme that supports segmenting the luggage contents based on the effective atomic number of each object, which is then followed by a dual-layered clustering procedure. The latter comprises of mild and a hard clustering phase. The former is based on a number of morphological operations obtained from the image-processing domain and aims at disjoining mild-connected objects and to filter noise. The hard clustering phase exploits local feature matching techniques obtained from the computer vision domain, aiming at sub-clustering the clusters obtained from the mild clustering stage. Evaluation on highly challenging single and dual-energy X-ray imagery reveals the architecture’s promising performance
A Density-Based Approach to the Retrieval of Top-K Spatial Textual Clusters
Keyword-based web queries with local intent retrieve web content that is
relevant to supplied keywords and that represent points of interest that are
near the query location. Two broad categories of such queries exist. The first
encompasses queries that retrieve single spatial web objects that each satisfy
the query arguments. Most proposals belong to this category. The second
category, to which this paper's proposal belongs, encompasses queries that
support exploratory user behavior and retrieve sets of objects that represent
regions of space that may be of interest to the user. Specifically, the paper
proposes a new type of query, namely the top-k spatial textual clusters (k-STC)
query that returns the top-k clusters that (i) are located the closest to a
given query location, (ii) contain the most relevant objects with regard to
given query keywords, and (iii) have an object density that exceeds a given
threshold. To compute this query, we propose a basic algorithm that relies on
on-line density-based clustering and exploits an early stop condition. To
improve the response time, we design an advanced approach that includes three
techniques: (i) an object skipping rule, (ii) spatially gridded posting lists,
and (iii) a fast range query algorithm. An empirical study on real data
demonstrates that the paper's proposals offer scalability and are capable of
excellent performance
