    Location Awareness in Multi-Agent Control of Distributed Energy Resources

    The integration of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) technologies such as heat pumps, electric vehicles and small-scale generation into the electricity grid at the household level is limited by technical constraints. This work argues that location is an important aspect for the control and integration of DER and that network topology can inferred without the use of a centralised network model. It addresses DER integration challenges by presenting a novel approach that uses a decentralised multi-agent system where equipment controllers learn and use their location within the low-voltage section of the power system. Models of electrical networks exhibiting technical constraints were developed. Through theoretical analysis and real network data collection, various sources of location data were identified and new geographical and electrical techniques were developed for deriving network topology using Global Positioning System (GPS) and 24-hour voltage logs. The multi-agent system paradigm and societal structures were examined as an approach to a multi-stakeholder domain and congregations were used as an aid to decentralisation in a non-hierarchical, non-market-based approach. Through formal description of the agent attitude INTEND2, the novel technique of Intention Transfer was applied to an agent congregation to provide an opt-in, collaborative system. Test facilities for multi-agent systems were developed and culminated in a new embedded controller test platform that integrated a real-time dynamic electrical network simulator to provide a full-feedback system integrated with control hardware. Finally, a multi-agent control system was developed and implemented that used location data in providing demand-side response to a voltage excursion, with the goals of improving power quality, reducing generator disconnections, and deferring network reinforcement. The resulting communicating and self-organising energy agent community, as demonstrated on a unique hardware-in-the-loop platform, provides an application model and test facility to inspire agent-based, location-aware smart grid applications across the power systems domain

    Combined analysis of coupled energy networks

    Energy supply systems such as the electricity, natural gas, district heating and cooling networks are typically designed and operated independently of each other. The increasing use of technologies such as combined heat and power units, gas turbines, heat pumps and recently, power to gas systems are increasing the links between energy systems introducing technical and economic interactions. There is a significant interest from academics, industry and policy makers in different parts of the world to identify and realise the opportunities of integrating energy networks while avoiding any undesirable impacts. Analysis of the interdependencies between different energy systems requires powerful software models and analysis tools. However, there are no commercial tools available to date. The aim of this research is to develop a model for the combined steady state simulation and operation planning of integrated energy supply systems. As part of this thesis, three key components of the model were developed i.e., a) Optimal power dispatch of an integrated energy system: A real case study was used to demonstrate the economic benefits of considering the interactions between different energy systems in their design and operation planning. b) Simultaneous steady state analysis of coupled energy networks: An example of a coupled electricity, gas, district heating and district cooling network system was used to illustrate the formulation of equations and the iterative solution method. A case study was carried out to demonstrate the application of the method for integrated energy network analysis. c) Steady state analysis of gas networks with the distributed injection of alternative gases: A case study was carried out to demonstrate the impact of alternative gas injections on the pressure delivery and gas quality in the network

    Agent-based Modelling and Big Data: Applications for Maritime Traffic Analysis

    Agent based modeling (ABM) is a powerful tool for examining complex systems in many scientific applications, including maritime transport systems. Growing demands for freight transport and increased industry emphasis on reducing environmental impacts have heightened the focus on vessel and port efficiency. This research aimed to create a maritime route planning model to simulate vessel movement in all waterways. The goal of the ship routing model developed in this research was to develop a simulation tool capable of reproducing real world shipping routes useful for navigation planning, with emphasis on port scheduling and potential application for further use and exploration. A modified breadth-first search algorithm was implemented as a NetLogo ABM in this research. With increasing volumes of ship location monitoring data, new approaches are now possible for examining performance-based metrics and to improve simulations with more precise verification and analysis. A Satellite Automatic Identification System dataset with over 500,000 vessel logs travelling across the Pacific Ocean and into the Port of Metro Vancouver was used as the focal area for model development and validation in this study. Automatic identification system (AIS) is the global standard for maritime navigation and traffic management, and data derived from AIS messages can be used for calibrating simulation model scenarios. In this analysis, the results examined how changes in simulation parameters alter route choice behaviour and how effective large AIS datasets are for validating and calibrating model results. Using large AIS datasets, model results can be quantified to examine how closely they resemble real-time vessels in the same region. Heatmaps provide a data visualization tool that effectively uses large data sets and calculates how closely model results resemble AIS data from the same region. In the case of PMV, the Maritime Ship Routing Model (MSRM) was able to replicate path likeness with a high level of accuracy, generating realistic navigation paths between the many islands on the eastern side of southern Vancouver Island, B.C., a busy marine traffic region and sensitive ecological area. This research highlights the use of ABM as a powerful, user-friendly tool for developing maritime shipping models useful for port scheduling and route analysis. The results of this study emphasize the use of large data sets that are applicable, clean, and reliable as a crucial source for validating and calibrating the MSRM

    Investigation of the consumer electronics bus

    The objectives of this dissertation are to investigate the performance of the Consumer Electronics Bus (CEBus) and to develop a theoretical formulation of the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Contention Detection and Contention Resolution (CSMA/CDCR) with three priority classes protocol utilized by the CEBus A new priority channel assigned multiple access with embedded priority resolution (PAMA/PR) theoretical model is formulated. It incorporates the main features of the CEBus with three priority classes. The analytical results for throughput and delay obtained by this formulation were compared to simulation experiments. A close agreement has been found thus validated both theory and simulation models Moreover, the performance of the CEBus implemented with two physical media, the power line (PL) and twisted pair (TP) communication lines, was investigated by measuring message and channel throughputs and mean packet and message delays. The router was modeled as a node which can handle three priority levels simultaneously. Satisfactory performance was obtained. Finally, a gateway joining the CEBus to ISDN was designed and its perfor-mance was evaluated. This gateway provides access to ISDN-based services to the CEBus. The ISDN and CEBus system network architecture, gateway wiring, and data and signaling interface between the CEBus and ISDN were designed, analyzed, and discussed.
