Breaking Instance-Independent Symmetries In Exact Graph Coloring
Code optimization and high level synthesis can be posed as constraint
satisfaction and optimization problems, such as graph coloring used in register
allocation. Graph coloring is also used to model more traditional CSPs relevant
to AI, such as planning, time-tabling and scheduling. Provably optimal
solutions may be desirable for commercial and defense applications.
Additionally, for applications such as register allocation and code
optimization, naturally-occurring instances of graph coloring are often small
and can be solved optimally. A recent wave of improvements in algorithms for
Boolean satisfiability (SAT) and 0-1 Integer Linear Programming (ILP) suggests
generic problem-reduction methods, rather than problem-specific heuristics,
because (1) heuristics may be upset by new constraints, (2) heuristics tend to
ignore structure, and (3) many relevant problems are provably inapproximable.
Problem reductions often lead to highly symmetric SAT instances, and
symmetries are known to slow down SAT solvers. In this work, we compare several
avenues for symmetry breaking, in particular when certain kinds of symmetry are
present in all generated instances. Our focus on reducing CSPs to SAT allows us
to leverage recent dramatic improvement in SAT solvers and automatically
benefit from future progress. We can use a variety of black-box SAT solvers
without modifying their source code because our symmetry-breaking techniques
are static, i.e., we detect symmetries and add symmetry breaking predicates
(SBPs) during pre-processing.
An important result of our work is that among the types of
instance-independent SBPs we studied and their combinations, the simplest and
least complete constructions are the most effective. Our experiments also
clearly indicate that instance-independent symmetries should mostly be
processed together with instance-specific symmetries rather than at the
specification level, contrary to what has been suggested in the literature
Front-to-End Bidirectional Heuristic Search with Near-Optimal Node Expansions
It is well-known that any admissible unidirectional heuristic search
algorithm must expand all states whose -value is smaller than the optimal
solution cost when using a consistent heuristic. Such states are called "surely
expanded" (s.e.). A recent study characterized s.e. pairs of states for
bidirectional search with consistent heuristics: if a pair of states is s.e.
then at least one of the two states must be expanded. This paper derives a
lower bound, VC, on the minimum number of expansions required to cover all s.e.
pairs, and present a new admissible front-to-end bidirectional heuristic search
algorithm, Near-Optimal Bidirectional Search (NBS), that is guaranteed to do no
more than 2VC expansions. We further prove that no admissible front-to-end
algorithm has a worst case better than 2VC. Experimental results show that NBS
competes with or outperforms existing bidirectional search algorithms, and

The Single Row Facility Layout Problem: State of the Art
The single row facility layout problem (SRFLP) is a NP-hard problem concerned with the arrangement of facilities of given lenghs on a line so as to minimize the weighted sum of the distances between all the pairs of facilities. The SRFLP and its special cases often arise while modeling a large variety of applications. It was actively researched until the mid-nineties. It has again been actively studied since 2005. Interestingly, research on many aspects of this problem is still in the initial stages, and hence the SRFLP is an interesting problem to work on. In this paper, we review the literature on the SRFLP and comment on its relationship with other location problems. We then provide an overview of different formulations of the problem that appear in the literature. We provide exact and heuristic approaches that have been used to solve SRFLPs, and finally point out research gaps and promising directions for future research on this problem.
A Literature Review On Combining Heuristics and Exact Algorithms in Combinatorial Optimization
There are several approaches for solving hard optimization problems. Mathematical programming techniques such as (integer) linear programming-based methods and metaheuristic approaches are two extremely effective streams for combinatorial problems. Different research streams, more or less in isolation from one another, created these two. Only several years ago, many scholars noticed the advantages and enormous potential of building hybrids of combining mathematical programming methodologies and metaheuristics. In reality, many problems can be solved much better by exploiting synergies between these approaches than by “pure” classical algorithms. The key question is how to integrate mathematical programming methods and metaheuristics to achieve such benefits. This paper reviews existing techniques for such combinations and provides examples of using them for vehicle routing problems
TSP--Infrastructure for the Traveling Salesperson Problem
The traveling salesperson (or, salesman) problem (TSP) is a well known and important combinatorial optimization problem. The goal is to find the shortest tour that visits each city in a given list exactly once and then returns to the starting city. Despite this simple problem statement, solving the TSP is difficult since it belongs to the class of NP-complete problems. The importance of the TSP arises besides from its theoretical appeal from the variety of its applications. Typical applications in operations research include vehicle routing, computer wiring, cutting wallpaper and job sequencing. The main application in statistics is combinatorial data analysis, e.g., reordering rows and columns of data matrices or identifying clusters. In this paper, we introduce the R package TSP which provides a basic infrastructure for handling and solving the traveling salesperson problem. The package features S3 classes for specifying a TSP and its (possibly optimal) solution as well as several heuristics to find good solutions. In addition, it provides an interface to Concorde, one of the best exact TSP solvers currently available.
The complexity of searching implicit graphs
AbstractThe standard complexity classes of complexity theory do not allow for direct classification of most of the problems solved by heuristic search algorithms. The reason is that, almost always, these are defined in terms of implicit graphs of state or problem reduction spaces, while the standard definitions of all complexity classes are specifically tailored to explicit inputs.To allow for more precise comparisons with standard complexity classes, we introduce here a model for the analysis of algorithms on graphs given by vertex expansion procedures. It is based on previously studied concepts of “succinct representation” techniques, and allows us to prove PSPACE-completeness or EXPTIME-completeness of specific, natural problems on implicit graphs, such as those solved by A∗, AO∗, and other best-first search strategies
