Tomato Tomahto: European Perspectives on Information Science

International audience‘And oh, if we ever part, then that might break my heart’ (Gershwin and Gershwin, 1937).In the lyric, ‘tomato tomahto’, the marked, or explicitly differentiated term, is tomahto, corresponding more to the English rather than the United States pronunciation. The marked term of a contrast characteristically designates the exception or minor term and the distinctions contained in the unmarked term may be implicitly, and incompletely, understood. Analogously, information science has often been implicitly based in the United States and influenced by American modes of thought, while European, including English, developments have been the occasionally marked and often minor term. This panel explores European perspectives on information science, explicitly and implicitly contrasting them with United States perspectives, from a base in a number of languages and in Europe and beyond. The panel employs diverse and complementary viewpoints and should make for a lively discussion. It concludes, in sympathy with Gershwin, that cooperation and integration, corresponding to increasing globalization, is the way forward. The combination of European and beyond and United States perspectives on information science is especially appropriate for the first ASIS&T Annual Meeting outside North America

Parameterized Synthetic Image Data Set for Fisheye Lens

Based on different projection geometry, a fisheye image can be presented as a parameterized non-rectilinear image. Deep neural networks(DNN) is one of the solutions to extract parameters for fisheye image feature description. However, a large number of images are required for training a reasonable prediction model for DNN. In this paper, we propose to extend the scale of the training dataset using parameterized synthetic images. It effectively boosts the diversity of images and avoids the data scale limitation. To simulate different viewing angles and distances, we adopt controllable parameterized projection processes on transformation. The reliability of the proposed method is proved by testing images captured by our fisheye camera. The synthetic dataset is the first dataset that is able to extend to a big scale labeled fisheye image dataset. Method: data were collected along the checkpoints used for mapping and metadata analysis and later analyzed by researchers. Microsoft Excel was used to analyze the data. The study was limited to Podcasts originating in Brazil and the research was fully performed on Podcast aggregators and Social Networks. Results: we identified 390 unique events related to information science during the pandemic, with 70 episodes dealing specifically with Covid-19. The analysis revealed that podcasts with themes related to Covid-19 have common characteristics, emphasizing information flows and documental treatment of scientific communication. It also showed that the discussions on topics related to Covid-19 in podcasts vary among the areas of Archivology, Librarianship and Museology. Conclusions: the survey and analysis of Podcasts and Webinars in the area of Information Science demonstrated their relevance as communication channels to gather knowledge and discussions that directly or indirectly involve their practical and theoretical skills to address the communication challenges of Covid-19.
