    On finding two-connected subgraphs in planar graphs

    We consider a basic problem in the design of reliable networks, namely, that of finding a minimum-wight 2-connected subgraph spanning a given set K of vertices in a planar graph. We show a relationship between this problem and that of finding shortest trails and cycles enclosing K, and derive a polynomial-time algorithm in the case when the vertices of K all lie on the same face

    Constrained Planarity and Augmentation Problems

    A clustered graph C=(G,T) consists of an undirected graph G and a rooted tree T in which the leaves of T correspond to the vertices of G=(V,E). Each vertex m in T corresponds to a subset of the vertices of the graph called ``cluster''. c-planarity is a natural extension of graph planarity for clustered graphs, and plays an important role in automatic graph drawing. The complexity status of c-planarity testing is unknown. It has been shown by Dahlhaus, Eades, Feng, Cohen that c-planarity can be tested in linear time for c-connected graphs, i.e., graphs in which the cluster induced subgraphs are connected. In the first part of the thesis, we provide a polynomial time algorithms for c-planarity testing of specific planar clustered graphs: Graphs for which - all nodes corresponding to the non-c-connected clusters lie on the same path in T starting at the root of T, or graphs in which for each non-connected cluster its super-cluster and all its siblings in T are connected, - for all clusters m G-G(m) is connected. The algorithms are based on the concepts for the subgraph induced planar connectivity augmentation problem, also presented in this thesis. Furthermore, we give some characterizations of c-planar clustered graphs using minors and dual graphs and introduce a c-planar augmentation method. Parts II deals with edge deletion and bimodal crossing minimization. We prove that the maximum planar subgraph problem remains NP-complete even for non-planar graphs without a minor isomorphic to either K(5) or K(3,3), respectively. Further, we investigate the problem of finding a minimum weighted set of edges whose removal results in a graph without minors that are contractible onto a prespecified set of vertices. Finally, we investigate the problem of drawing a directed graph in two dimensions with a minimal number of crossings such that for every node the incoming and outgoing edges are separated consecutively in the cyclic adjacency lists. It turns out that the planarization method can be adapted such that the number of crossings can be expected to grow only slightly for practical instances

    Planar Induced Subgraphs of Sparse Graphs

    We show that every graph has an induced pseudoforest of at least n−m/4.5n-m/4.5 vertices, an induced partial 2-tree of at least n−m/5n-m/5 vertices, and an induced planar subgraph of at least n−m/5.2174n-m/5.2174 vertices. These results are constructive, implying linear-time algorithms to find the respective induced subgraphs. We also show that the size of the largest KhK_h-minor-free graph in a given graph can sometimes be at most n−m/6+o(m)n-m/6+o(m).Comment: Accepted by Graph Drawing 2014.     Surface Split Decompositions and Subgraph Isomorphism in Graphs on Surfaces

    The Subgraph Isomorphism problem asks, given a host graph G on n vertices and a pattern graph P on k vertices, whether G contains a subgraph isomorphic to P. The restriction of this problem to planar graphs has often been considered. After a sequence of improvements, the current best algorithm for planar graphs is a linear time algorithm by Dorn (STACS '10), with complexity 2O(k)O(n)2^{O(k)} O(n). We generalize this result, by giving an algorithm of the same complexity for graphs that can be embedded in surfaces of bounded genus. At the same time, we simplify the algorithm and analysis. The key to these improvements is the introduction of surface split decompositions for bounded genus graphs, which generalize sphere cut decompositions for planar graphs. We extend the algorithm for the problem of counting and generating all subgraphs isomorphic to P, even for the case where P is disconnected. This answers an open question by Eppstein (SODA '95 / JGAA '99)

    The VC-Dimension of Graphs with Respect to k-Connected Subgraphs

    We study the VC-dimension of the set system on the vertex set of some graph which is induced by the family of its kk-connected subgraphs. In particular, we give tight upper and lower bounds for the VC-dimension. Moreover, we show that computing the VC-dimension is NP\mathsf{NP}-complete and that it remains NP\mathsf{NP}-complete for split graphs and for some subclasses of planar bipartite graphs in the cases k=1k = 1 and k=2k = 2. On the positive side, we observe it can be decided in linear time for graphs of bounded clique-width

    Crossing Patterns in Nonplanar Road Networks

    We define the crossing graph of a given embedded graph (such as a road network) to be a graph with a vertex for each edge of the embedding, with two crossing graph vertices adjacent when the corresponding two edges of the embedding cross each other. In this paper, we study the sparsity properties of crossing graphs of real-world road networks. We show that, in large road networks (the Urban Road Network Dataset), the crossing graphs have connected components that are primarily trees, and that the remaining non-tree components are typically sparse (technically, that they have bounded degeneracy). We prove theoretically that when an embedded graph has a sparse crossing graph, it has other desirable properties that lead to fast algorithms for shortest paths and other algorithms important in geographic information systems. Notably, these graphs have polynomial expansion, meaning that they and all their subgraphs have small separators.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures.
