Large-System Analysis of Joint Channel and Data Estimation for MIMO DS-CDMA Systems
This paper presents a large-system analysis of the performance of joint
channel estimation, multiuser detection, and per-user decoding (CE-MUDD) for
randomly-spread multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) direct-sequence
code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems. A suboptimal receiver based on
successive decoding in conjunction with linear minimum mean-squared error
(LMMSE) channel estimation is investigated. The replica method, developed in
statistical mechanics, is used to evaluate the performance in the large-system
limit, where the number of users and the spreading factor tend to infinity
while their ratio and the number of transmit and receive antennas are kept
constant. The performance of the joint CE-MUDD based on LMMSE channel
estimation is compared to the spectral efficiencies of several receivers based
on one-shot LMMSE channel estimation, in which the decoded data symbols are not
utilized to refine the initial channel estimates. The results imply that the
use of joint CE-MUDD significantly reduces rate loss due to transmission of
pilot signals, especially for multiple-antenna systems. As a result, joint
CE-MUDD can provide significant performance gains, compared to the receivers
based on one-shot channel estimation.Comment: The paper was resubmitted to IEEE Trans. Inf. Theor
Performance Analysis of Iterative Channel Estimation and Multiuser Detection in Multipath DS-CDMA Channels
This paper examines the performance of decision feedback based iterative
channel estimation and multiuser detection in channel coded aperiodic DS-CDMA
systems operating over multipath fading channels. First, explicit expressions
describing the performance of channel estimation and parallel interference
cancellation based multiuser detection are developed. These results are then
combined to characterize the evolution of the performance of a system that
iterates among channel estimation, multiuser detection and channel decoding.
Sufficient conditions for convergence of this system to a unique fixed point
are developed.Comment: To appear in the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Impact of Channel Estimation Errors on Multiuser Detection via the Replica Method
For practical wireless DS-CDMA systems, channel estimation is imperfect due
to noise and interference. In this paper, the impact of channel estimation
errors on multiuser detection (MUD) is analyzed under the framework of the
replica method. System performance is obtained in the large system limit for
optimal MUD, linear MUD and turbo MUD, and is validated by numerical results
for finite systems.Comment: To appear in the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communication and

Blind adaptive constrained reduced-rank parameter estimation based on constant modulus design for CDMA interference suppression
This paper proposes a multistage decomposition for blind adaptive parameter estimation in the Krylov subspace with the code-constrained constant modulus (CCM) design criterion. Based on constrained optimization of the constant modulus cost function and utilizing the Lanczos algorithm and Arnoldi-like iterations, a multistage decomposition is developed for blind parameter estimation. A family of computationally efficient blind adaptive reduced-rank stochastic gradient (SG) and recursive least squares (RLS) type algorithms along with an automatic rank selection procedure are also devised and evaluated against existing methods. An analysis of the convergence properties of the method is carried out and convergence conditions for the reduced-rank adaptive algorithms are established. Simulation results consider the application of the proposed techniques to the suppression of multiaccess and intersymbol interference in DS-CDMA systems
Coded DS-CDMA Systems with Iterative Channel Estimation and no Pilot Symbols
In this paper, we describe direct-sequence code-division multiple-access
(DS-CDMA) systems with quadriphase-shift keying in which channel estimation,
coherent demodulation, and decoding are iteratively performed without the use
of any training or pilot symbols. An expectation-maximization
channel-estimation algorithm for the fading amplitude, phase, and the
interference power spectral density (PSD) due to the combined interference and
thermal noise is proposed for DS-CDMA systems with irregular repeat-accumulate
codes. After initial estimates of the fading amplitude, phase, and interference
PSD are obtained from the received symbols, subsequent values of these
parameters are iteratively updated by using the soft feedback from the channel
decoder. The updated estimates are combined with the received symbols and
iteratively passed to the decoder. The elimination of pilot symbols simplifies
the system design and allows either an enhanced information throughput, an
improved bit error rate, or greater spectral efficiency. The interference-PSD
estimation enables DS-CDMA systems to significantly suppress interference.Comment: To appear, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
Robust Reduced-Rank Adaptive Processing Based on Parallel Subgradient Projection and Krylov Subspace Techniques
In this paper, we propose a novel reduced-rank adaptive filtering algorithm
by blending the idea of the Krylov subspace methods with the set-theoretic
adaptive filtering framework. Unlike the existing Krylov-subspace-based
reduced-rank methods, the proposed algorithm tracks the optimal point in the
sense of minimizing the \sinq{true} mean square error (MSE) in the Krylov
subspace, even when the estimated statistics become erroneous (e.g., due to
sudden changes of environments). Therefore, compared with those existing
methods, the proposed algorithm is more suited to adaptive filtering
applications. The algorithm is analyzed based on a modified version of the
adaptive projected subgradient method (APSM). Numerical examples demonstrate
that the proposed algorithm enjoys better tracking performance than the
existing methods for the interference suppression problem in code-division
multiple-access (CDMA) systems as well as for simple system identification
problems.Comment: 10 figures. In IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 201
Code-timing synchronization in DS-CDMA systems using space-time diversity
The synchronization of a desired user transmitting a known training sequence in a direct-sequence (DS) asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) sys-tem is addressed. It is assumed that the receiver consists of an arbitrary antenna array and works in a near-far, frequency-nonselective, slowly fading channel. The estimator that we propose is derived by applying the maximum likelihood (ML) principle to a signal model in which the contribution of all the interfering compo-nents (e.g., multiple-access interference, external interference and noise) is modeled as a Gaussian term with an unknown and arbitrary space-time correlation matrix. The main contribution of this paper is the fact that the estimator makes eÆcient use of the structure of the signals in both the space and time domains. Its perfor-mance is compared with the Cramer-Rao Bound, and with the performance of other methods proposed recently that also employ an antenna array but only exploit the structure of the signals in one of the two domains, while using the other simply as a means of path diversity. It is shown that the use of the temporal and spatial structures is necessary to achieve synchronization in heavily loaded systems or in the presence of directional external interference.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
