Embedded Rank Distance Codes for ISI channels

    Get PDF
Designs for transmit alphabet constrained space-time codes naturally lead to questions about the design of rank distance codes. Recently, diversity embedded multi-level space-time codes for flat fading channels have been designed from sets of binary matrices with rank distance guarantees over the binary field by mapping them onto QAM and PSK constellations. In this paper we demonstrate that diversity embedded space-time codes for fading Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) channels can be designed with provable rank distance guarantees. As a corollary we obtain an asymptotic characterization of the fixed transmit alphabet rate-diversity trade-off for multiple antenna fading ISI channels. The key idea is to construct and analyze properties of binary matrices with a particular structure induced by ISI channels.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor

Active Terminal Identification, Channel Estimation, and Signal Detection for Grant-Free NOMA-OTFS in LEO Satellite Internet-of-Things

This paper investigates the massive connectivity of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) for seamless global coverage. We propose to integrate the grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) paradigm with the emerging orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation to accommodate the massive IoT access, and mitigate the long round-trip latency and severe Doppler effect of terrestrial-satellite links (TSLs). On this basis, we put forward a two-stage successive active terminal identification (ATI) and channel estimation (CE) scheme as well as a low-complexity multi-user signal detection (SD) method. Specifically, at the first stage, the proposed training sequence aided OTFS (TS-OTFS) data frame structure facilitates the joint ATI and coarse CE, whereby both the traffic sparsity of terrestrial IoT terminals and the sparse channel impulse response are leveraged for enhanced performance. Moreover, based on the single Doppler shift property for each TSL and sparsity of delay-Doppler domain channel, we develop a parametric approach to further refine the CE performance. Finally, a least square based parallel time domain SD method is developed to detect the OTFS signals with relatively low complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods over the state-of-the-art solutions in terms of ATI, CE, and SD performance confronted with the long round-trip latency and severe Doppler effect.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted by IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication

Resource allocation for layered broadcast over relay-assisted channels

The topic of this thesis is on the application of “multilayer transmission” using the broadcast approach on a “relay-assisted” channel. Unlike single layer transmission, where all transmitted information bits have the same protection level by the channel coding scheme, multilayer transmission schemes combine successive refinement layered source coding with ordered protection levels of the source layers. Consequently, the receiver will be able to decode “some” information when the channel is faded and “all” information when the channel is good. The multilayer transmission schemes have gained a lot of interest in the information theory and the communication theory literature, where most researchers are interested in the “broadcast approach” since it is the optimal transmission strategy. In this thesis, we consider a fading relay channel where the source uses layered source coding with successive refinement. The source layers are transmitted using superposition coding at the source with optimal resource allocation. The destination applies successive interference cancellation after optimally combining the direct and relayed signals. The resource allocation for the layers is subject to optimization in order to maximize the expected user satisfaction that is usually defined by a differentiable concave increasing utility function of the total decoded rate at the destination. As special cases, we consider two utility functions; namely, the expected total decoded rate at the receiver and the expected rate distortion of a Gaussian source. We also assume that only the channel statistics are known at the receiver. The relay is half-duplex and applies different relaying strategies, and we have investigated the Amplify-and-Forward, and Decode-and-Forward strategies in particular. First, we consider the case of Decode-and-Forward relays where we consider two layers only with predetermined rates for simplicity, and we solve the problem of optimal power allocation among the two layers at the source and the relay using random search methods. After that, we solve the optimal power allocation problem for any number of layers with fixed rates over an Amplify-and-Forward relays. An approximation for the end-to-end channel quality is presented in terms of the statistics of the three links of the channel model. Furthermore, we obtain that for some conditions, it is optimal to send only one layer. Finally, we solve the joint optimal power and rate allocation problem for any number of layers over an Amplify-and-Forward relays. We also consider the theoretical case of infinite number of layers representing an upper bound for the performance. Moreover, we show that with a small number of layers, we can approach the performance upper bound. We provide many numerical examples for the three cases above to show the prospected gains of using the relays on the expected utility for different channel conditions

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2009.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 109-111).We consider codec structures that exploit diversity in both source coding and channel coding components. We propose to study source-channel schemes using the tradeoff between end-to-end distortion level and the outage probability as our performance metric, namely distortion-diversity tradeoff. In the high SNR regime, within the distortion-diversity tradeoff framework, we are able to differentiate two source-channel schemes, one based on multi-resolution (MR) and the other based on multi-description (MD), that have been previously determined to have the same average distortion exponent. We then propose a triple-level source-channel scheme that unifies the Mr-based and the MD-based schemes. In particular, we demonstrate that the triple-level scheme dominates the MD-based and the MR-based schemes within the distortion-diversity tradeoff framework. We then extend the distortion-diversity tradeoff to the low SNR regime. We compare the distortion performance of the MR-based scheme and MD-based scheme with separate source-channel decoder that achieve constant levels of outage probability. The performance comparison between the two source-channel schemes is mixed, which naturally links the low outage probability and the high outage probability cases. In particular, the MD-based scheme with separate source-channel decoder preserves the interface between source coding component and channel coding component. The fact that MD-based scheme could outperform MR-based scheme while preserving the source-channel interface suggests that bit rates may not be a complete characterization of the source-channel interface.by Sheng Jing.Ph.D

Future 4G mobile radio cellular networks are considered OFDM-MIMO systems. Cooperative communication based on coordinated base stations is a very promising concept to perform inter-cell interference management. This thesis deals with the concept of cooperative communication from its information-theoretic background to its practical system design. The main focus is a practical design of the joint detection scheme in the uplink and the joint transmission scheme in the downlink with partial channel-state information (CSI), i.e., significant CSI and imperfect CSI.Zukünftige zellulare 4G-Mobilfunksysteme können als OFDM-MIMO-Systeme betrachtet werden.

Adaptive multicoding and robust linear-quadratic receivers for uncertain CDMA frequency-selective fading channels

Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) communications in the presence of channel uncertainty poses a challenging problem with many practical applications in the wireless communications filed. In this dissertation, robust linear-quadratic (LQ) receivers for time-varying, frequency-selective CDMA channels in the presence of uncertainty regarding instantaneous channel state information are proposed and studied. In order to enhance the performance of the LQ receivers, a novel modulation technique adaptive multicoding is employed. We proposed a simple, intuitively appealing cost function the modified deflection ratio that can be maximized to find signal constellations and associated LQ receivers that are optimal in a certain sense. We discuss the properties of the proposed LQ cost function and derive a related adaptive algorithm for the simultaneous design of signals and receivers based on a simple multicoding technique. The Chernoff bound for the LQ receivers is also derived to compensate for the analytical intractability of the probability of bit error. Finally, in order to achieve higher data rate transmission in favorable channels, we extend our approach from binary signals to M-ary signal constellations in a multi-dimension subspace

OTFS vs. OFDM in the Presence of Sparsity: A Fair Comparison

Many recent works in the literature declare that Orthogonal Time-Frequency-Space (OTFS) modulation is a promising candidate technology for high mobility communication scenarios. However, a truly fair comparison with its direct concurrent and widely used Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation has not yet been provided. In this paper, we present such a fair comparison between the two digital modulation formats in terms of achievable communication rate. In this context, we explicitly address the problem of channel estimation by considering, for each modulation, a pilot scheme and the associated channel estimation algorithm specifically adapted to sparse channels in the Doppler-delay domain, targeting the optimization of the pilot overhead to maximize the overall achievable rate. In our achievable rate analysis we consider also the presence of a guard interval or cyclic prefix. The results are supported by numerical simulations, for different time-frequency selective channels including multiple scattering components and under non-perfect channel state information resulting from the considered pilot schemes. This work does not claim to establish in a fully definitive way which is the best modulation format, since such choice depends on many other features which are outside the scope of this work (e.g., legacy, intellectual property, ease and know-how for implementation, and many other criteria). Nevertheless, we provide the foundations to properly compare multi-carrier communication systems in terms of their information theoretic achievable rate potential, within meaningful and sensible assumptions on the channel models and on the receiver complexity (both in terms of channel estimation and in terms of soft-output symbol detection)
