    Analysing the impact of rescheduling time in hybrid manufacturing control

    Hybrid manufacturing control architectures merge the benefits of hierarchical and heterarchical approaches. Disturbances can be handled at upper or lower decision levels, depending on the type of disturbance, its impact and the time the control system has to react. This paper focuses particularly on a disturbance handling mechanism at upper decision levels using a rescheduling manufacturing method. Such rescheduling is more complex that the offline scheduling since the control system must take into account the current system status, obtain a satisfactory performance under the new conditions, and also come up with a new schedule in a restricted amount of time. Then, this paper proposes a simple and generic rescheduling method which, based on the satisfying principle, analyses the trade-off between the rescheduling time and the performance achieved after a perturbation. The proposed approach is validated on a simulation model of a realistic assembly cell and results demonstrate that adaptation of the rescheduling time might be beneficial in terms of overall performance and reactivity.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Agent-based hierarchical production planning and scheduling in make-to-order manufacturing system

In order to survive in the turbulent environment, manufacturing organisations must become flexible and responsive to these dynamic changes in the business environment. This paper presents a hierarchical agent bidding mechanism that is particularly designed for Make-to-Order manufacturing system and attempts to enhance the operational flexibility of manufacturing system in dealing with dynamic changes in the business environment. The novelty of this mechanism is that it enables manufacturing resources to be self-organised cost-efficiently within structural constraints of manufacturing system for fulfilling customer orders. However, when orders cannot be fulfilled within the structural constraints of manufacturing systems, the mechanism can enable manufacturing resources to be regrouped flexibly across system boundaries but with minimum disturbances to existing system structure. Based on an example application to a manufacturing company, this paper demonstrates that the operational flexibility provided by this mechanism is able to help manufacturing system to respond demand fluctuation through balancing the capacity across the entire system. Meanwhile, this mechanism potentially enables manufacturing systems to deal with unexpected changes in product type. As long as the manufacturing system has the technicality required by a new product, this mechanism enables resources across the manufacturing system to be cost-efficiently and flexibly self-organised to fulfil the new product

    Scheduling for Flexible Production: A Case Study of Production Leveling Under Volume Constraints

    Flexible manufacturing systems in high-mix low-volume segments offer many challenges in terms of planning and scheduling. The complexity of these systems often requires a systemic approach for which humans are the perfect actors. However, computer systems can support scheduling tasks more effectively due to their capacity to synthesize large amounts of data. This paper describes a system developed for the flexible manufacturing of wooden doors with a wide range of product configurations. This paper proposes a rule-based scheduling method for high-mix production. The method was applied and validated at a wooden door producer. Based on the company's production schedule for a given week, a scheduling program was developed that suggested minor rearrangements for production leveling. As the rule-based approach makes the decisions verifiable, the program was validated at the producer, through a case study of production leveling under volume constraints. The results include the complete elimination of changeovers and the stabilization of throughput, which improved the precision of the delivery time. The producer is integrating the program into their production planning and control system. Thus, the results suggest that the proposed method can be useful for scheduling high-mix low-volume production, and merits further validation in similar environments.acceptedVersio

    Generally speaking, scheduling is the procedure of mapping a set of tasks or jobs (studied objects) to a set of target resources efficiently. More specifically, as a part of a larger planning and scheduling process, production scheduling is essential for the proper functioning of a manufacturing enterprise. This book presents ten chapters divided into five sections. Section 1 discusses rescheduling strategies, policies, and methods for production scheduling. Section 2 presents two chapters about flow shop scheduling. Section 3 describes heuristic and metaheuristic methods for treating the scheduling problem in an efficient manner. In addition, two test cases are presented in Section 4. The first uses simulation, while the second shows a real implementation of a production scheduling system. Finally, Section 5 presents some modeling strategies for building production scheduling systems.
