    T-infinity: The Dependency Inversion Principle for Rapid and Sustainable Multidisciplinary Software Development

    The CFD Vision 2030 Study recommends that, NASA should develop and maintain an integrated simulation and software development infrastructure to enable rapid CFD technology maturation.... [S]oftware standards and interfaces must be emphasized and supported whenever possible, and open source models for noncritical technology components should be adopted. The current paper presents an approach to an open source development architecture, named T-infinity, for accelerated research in CFD leveraging the Dependency Inversion Principle to realize plugins that communicate through collections of functions without exposing internal data structures. Steady state flow visualization, mesh adaptation, fluid-structure interaction, and overset domain capabilities are demonstrated through compositions of plugins via standardized abstract interfaces without the need for source code dependencies between disciplines. Plugins interact through abstract interfaces thereby avoiding N 2 direct code-to-code data structure coupling where N is the number of codes. This plugin architecture enhances sustainable development by controlling the interaction between components to limit software complexity growth. The use of T-infinity abstract interfaces enables multidisciplinary application developers to leverage legacy applications alongside newly-developed capabilities.     Simulating water-entry/exit problems using Eulerian-Lagrangian and fully-Eulerian fictitious domain methods within the open-source IBAMR library

    In this paper we employ two implementations of the fictitious domain (FD) method to simulate water-entry and water-exit problems and demonstrate their ability to simulate practical marine engineering problems. In FD methods, the fluid momentum equation is extended within the solid domain using an additional body force that constrains the structure velocity to be that of a rigid body. Using this formulation, a single set of equations is solved over the entire computational domain. The constraint force is calculated in two distinct ways: one using an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework of the immersed boundary (IB) method and another using a fully-Eulerian approach of the Brinkman penalization (BP) method. Both FSI strategies use the same multiphase flow algorithm that solves the discrete incompressible Navier-Stokes system in conservative form. A consistent transport scheme is employed to advect mass and momentum in the domain, which ensures numerical stability of high density ratio multiphase flows involved in practical marine engineering applications. Example cases of a free falling wedge (straight and inclined) and cylinder are simulated, and the numerical results are compared against benchmark cases in literature.Comment: The current paper builds on arXiv:1901.07892 and re-explains some parts of it for the reader's convenienc

    High-fidelity Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis and Design Optimization for Rotorcraft Applications

    A multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis of rotorcraft simulations involving tightly coupled high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics and comprehensive analysis solvers is presented and evaluated. A sensitivity-enabled fluid dynamics solver and a nonlinear flexible multibody dynamics solver are coupled to predict aerodynamic loads and structural responses of helicopter rotor blades. A discretely consistent adjoint-based sensitivity analysis available in the fluid dynamics solver provides sensitivities arising from unsteady turbulent flows and unstructured dynamic overset meshes, while a complex-variable approach is used to compute structural sensitivities with respect to aerodynamic loads. The multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis is conducted through integrating the sensitivity components from each discipline of the coupled system. Accuracy of the coupled system is validated by conducting simulations for a benchmark rotorcraft model and comparing solutions with established analyses and experimental data. Sensitivities of lift computed by the multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis are verified by comparison with the sensitivities obtained by complex-variable simulations. Finally the multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis is applied to a constrained gradient-based design optimization for a HART-II rotorcraft configuration

    Aerodynamic optimization studies on advanced architecture computers

    The approach to carrying out multi-discipline aerospace design studies in the future, especially in massively parallel computing environments, comprises of choosing (1) suitable solvers to compute solutions to equations characterizing a discipline, and (2) efficient optimization methods. In addition, for aerodynamic optimization problems, (3) smart methodologies must be selected to modify the surface shape. In this research effort, a 'direct' optimization method is implemented on the Cray C-90 to improve aerodynamic design. It is coupled with an existing implicit Navier-Stokes solver, OVERFLOW, to compute flow solutions. The optimization method is chosen such that it can accomodate multi-discipline optimization in future computations. In the work , however, only single discipline aerodynamic optimization will be included

    Overset grid applications on distributed memory MIMD computers

    Analysis of modern aerospace vehicles requires the computation of flowfields about complex three dimensional geometries composed of regions with varying spatial resolution requirements. Overset grid methods allow the use of proven structured grid flow solvers to address the twin issues of geometrical complexity and the resolution variation by decomposing the complex physical domain into a collection of overlapping subdomains. This flexibility is accompanied by the need for irregular intergrid boundary communication among the overlapping component grids. This study investigates a strategy for implementing such a static overset grid implicit flow solver on distributed memory, MIMD computers; i.e., the 128 node Intel iPSC/860 and the 208 node Intel Paragon. Performance data for two composite grid configurations characteristic of those encountered in present day aerodynamic analysis are also presented

    CHANCE: A FRENCH-GERMAN HELICOPTER CFD-PROJECT

    The paper gives an overview of the CHANCE research project (partly supported by the French DPAC and DGA and the German BMWA) which was started in 1998 between the German and French Aerospace Research Centres DLR and ONERA, the University of Stuttgart and the two National Helicopter Manufacturers, Eurocopter and Eurocopter Deutschland. The objective of the project was to develop and validate CFD tools for computing the aerodynamics of the complete helicopter, accounting for the blade elasticity by coupling with blade dynamics. The validation activity of the flow solvers was achieved through intermediate stages of increasing geometry and flow modelling complexity, starting from an isolated rotor in hover, and concluding with the time-accurate simulation of a complete helicopter configuration in forward-flight. All along the research program the updated versions of the CFD codes were systematically delivered to Industry. This approach was chosen to speed up the transfer of capabilities to industry and check early enough that the products meet the expectations for applicability in the industrial environment of Eurocopter

    Advances in Time-Domain Electromagnetic Simulation Capabilities Through the Use of Overset Grids and Massively Parallel Computing

    A new methodology is presented for conducting numerical simulations of electromagnetic scattering and wave propagation phenomena. Technologies from several scientific disciplines, including computational fluid dynamics, computational electromagnetics, and parallel computing, are uniquely combined to form a simulation capability that is both versatile and practical. In the process of creating this capability, work is accomplished to conduct the first study designed to quantify the effects of domain decomposition on the performance of a class of explicit hyperbolic partial differential equations solvers; to develop a new method of partitioning computational domains comprised of overset grids; and to provide the first detailed assessment of the applicability of overset grids to the field of computational electromagnetics. Furthermore, the first Finite Volume Time Domain (FVTD) algorithm capable of utilizing overset grids on massively parallel computing platforms is developed and implemented. Results are presented for a number of scattering and wave propagation simulations conducted using this algorithm, including two spheres in close proximity and a finned missile

    A Solution Adaptive Structured/Unstructured Overset Grid Flow Solver with Applications to Helicopter Rotor Flows

    This paper summarizes a method that solves both the three dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations and the Euler equations using overset structured and solution adaptive unstructured grids with applications to helicopter rotor flowfields. The overset structured grids use an implicit finite-difference method to solve the thin-layer Navier-Stokes/Euler equations while the unstructured grid uses an explicit finite-volume method to solve the Euler equations. Solutions on a helicopter rotor in hover show the ability to accurately convect the rotor wake. However, isotropic subdivision of the tetrahedral mesh rapidly increases the overall problem size

    Coupled computational fluid mechanics/multibody dynamics approach for naval applications

    The multibody dynamics (MBD) solver MagnusDyn and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code REX, both developed at the University of Iowa, are implicitly coupled. MagnusDyn can solve bodies connected through a variety of joints and cables, while REX is a dynamic overset naval hydrodynamics code with extensive capabilities for motions of surface and underwater vehicles including waves, autopilots and wind. The implementation adds capability to simulate at-sea operations, like takeoff and landing of manned and unmanned aircraft, deployment and recovery of service watercraft, etc. In these maneuvers, interaction between vessels occurs through connecting cables or direct contact. The paper describes the strategy to couple the solvers and presents validation and demonstration cases, including the relaxation of a buoy, and deployment and recovery of an unmanned underwater vehicle.Publicado en: Mecánica Computacional vol.
