    LINK ADAPTATION IN WIRELESS NETWORKS: A CROSS-LAYER APPROACH

    Conventional Link Adaptation Techniques in wireless networks aim to overcome harsh link conditions caused by physical environmental properties, by adaptively regulating modulation, coding and other signal and protocol specific parameters. These techniques are essential for the overall performance of the networks, especially for environments where the ambient noise level is high or the noise level changes rapidly. Link adaptation techniques answer the questions of What to change? and When to change? in order to improve the present layer performance. Once these decisions are made, other layers are expected to function perfectly with the new communication channel conditions. In our work, we have shown that this assumption does not always hold; and provide two mechanisms that lessen the negative outcomes caused by these decisions. Our first solution, MORAL, is a MAC layer link adaptation technique which utilizes the physical transmission information in order to create differentiation between wireless users with different communication capabilities. MORAL passively collects information from its neighbors and re-aligns the MAC layer parameters according to the observed conditions. MORAL improves the fairness and total throughput of the system through distributing the mutually shared network assets to the wireless users in a fairer manner, according to their capabilities. Our second solution, Data Rate and Fragmentation Aware Ad-hoc Routing protocol, is a network layer link adaptation technique which utilizes the physical transmission information in order to differentiate the wireless links according to their communication capabilities. The proposed mechanism takes the physical transmission parameters into account during the path creation process and produces energy-efficient network paths. The research demonstrated in this dissertation contributes to our understanding of link adaptation techniques and broadens the scope of such techniques beyond simple, one-step physical parameter adjustments. We have designed and implemented two cross-layer mechanisms that utilize the physical layer information to better adapt to the varying channel conditions caused by physical link adaptation mechanisms. These mechanisms has shown that even though the Link Adaptation concept starts at the physical layer, its effects are by no means restricted to this layer; and the wireless networks can benefit considerably by expanding the scope of this concept throughout the entire network stack

    Design and Evaluation of Efficient Medium Access Control Solutions for Vehicular Environments

    [EN] In recent years, advances in wireless technologies and improved sensing and computational capabilities have led to a gradual transition towards Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and related applications. These applications aim at improving road safety, provide smart navigation, and eco-friendly driving. Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) provide a communication structure for ITS by equipping cars with advanced sensors and communication devices that enable a direct exchange of information between vehicles. Different types of ITS applications rely on two types of messages: periodic beacons and event-driven messages. Beacons include information such as geographical location, speed, and acceleration, and they are only disseminated to a close neighborhood. Differently from beacons, event-driven messages are only generated when a critical event of general interest occurs, and it is spread within a specific target area for the duration of the event. The reliability of information exchange is one of the main issues for vehicularcommunications since the safety of people on the road is directly related to the effectiveness of these transmissions. A Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol must guarantee reliable beacon broadcasting within deadline bounds to all vehicles in the neighbourhood, thereby providing them timely notifications about unsafe driving conditions or other hazardous events. Moreover, infotainment and comfort applications require reliable unicast transmissions that must be taken into account. However, high node mobility, highly dynamic topology, and lack of a central control unit, are issues that make the design of a reliable MAC protocol for vehicular environments a very difficult and challenging task, especially when efficient broadcasting strategies are required. The IEEE 802.11p MAC protocol, an approved amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard, is a random access protocol that is unable to provide guaranteed delay bounds with sufficient reliability in vehicular scenarios, especially under high channel usage. This problem is particularly serious when implementing (semi-) automated driving applications such as platooning, where inter-vehicle spacing is drastically reduced, and the control loop that manages and maintains the platoon requires frequent, timely and reliable exchange of status information (beacons). In this thesis novel protocols compatible with the IEEE 802.11 and 802.11p standards are proposed in order to optimally adjust the contention window size for unicast applications in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) and VANETs. Experimental tests comparing our proposals to existing solutions show that the former are able to improve the packet delivery ratio and the average end-to-end delay for unicast applications. Concerning efficient message diffusion (broadcast) in VANET environments, we proposed token-based MAC solutions to improve the performance achieved by existing 802.11p driving safety applications in different vehicular environments, including highway, urban, and platooning scenarios. Experimental results show that the proposed solutions clearly outperform 802.11p when delay-bounded beacons and event notifications must be delivered.[ES] Recientemente, los avances en las tecnologías inalámbricas y las mejoras en términos de capacidades de sensorización y computación de los dispositivos electrónicos, han dado lugar a una transición gradual hacia servicios y aplicaciones de los Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte (ITS). Estas aplicaciones tienen como objetivo mejorar la seguridad vial, proporcionar una navegación inteligente, y promover la conducción eco-eficiente. Las redes vehiculares ad hoc (VANETs) proporcionan una infraestructura de comunicaciones para ITS al equipar los coches con sensores avanzados y dispositivos de comunicación que permiten el intercambio directo de información entre vehículos. Los diferentes tipos de aplicaciones ITS se basan en dos tipos de mensajes: mensajes periódicos conocidos como beacons y mensajes asociados a eventos. Los mensajes periódicos incluyen información relativa a la ubicación geográfica, la velocidad y la aceleración, entre otros, y sólo son distribuidos entre los vehículos vecinos. A diferencia de estos beacons, los mensajes asociados a eventos sólo se generan cuando se produce un evento crítico de interés general, el cual se propaga dentro del área de interés de dicho evento y mientras éste siga activo. La fiabilidad del intercambio de información es uno de los principales problemas para las comunicaciones vehiculares, debido principalmente a que las aplicaciones de seguridad dependen directamente de la eficacia de estas transmisiones. Un protocolo de Control de Acceso al Medio (MAC) debe garantizar la difusión fiable de información a todos los vehículos vecinos dentro de unos límites máximos de retardo, proporcionándoles las notificaciones oportunas respecto a condiciones de conducción inseguras y otros eventos peligrosos. Por otra parte, las aplicaciones de información y entretenimiento, así como las aplicaciones orientadas al confort, también requieren transmisiones fiables extremoa-extremo. Sin embargo, la alta movilidad de los vehículos, la variabilidad de la topología, así como la falta de una unidad central de control, son factores que hacen que el diseño de un protocolo MAC fiable para entornos vehiculares sea una tarea especialmente compleja, especialmente cuando son necesarias estrategias de difusión eficientes. El protocolo MAC IEEE 802.11p, una modificación ya aprobada al estándar IEEE 802.11 original para entornos de comunicación vehiculares, es un protocolo de acceso que no es capaz de garantizar unos límites de retardo con la fiabilidad necesaria para estos entornos, especialmente en escenarios de alta utilización del canal inalámbrico. Este problema es particularmente importante a la hora de implementar aplicaciones de conducción (semi-)automática, como el caso de grupos de vehículos donde la separación entre vehículos se reduce drásticamente, y el sistema de control que gestiona y mantiene el grupo requiere de un intercambio frecuente de información fiable y acotado en retardo. En esta tesis se proponen nuevos protocolos MAC compatibles con los estándares IEEE 802.11 y 802.11p basados en el ajuste del tamaño de la ventana de contención para aplicaciones unicast en rede MANETs y VANETs. Los resultados experimentales obtenidos comparando nuestras propuestas con las soluciones existentes muestran que los protocolos propuestos son capaces de mejorar la tasa de entrega de paquetes y el retardo medio extremo-a-extremo para aplicaciones unicast. En lo que respecta a la difusión eficiente de mensajes broadcast en entornos VANET, se han propuesto soluciones MAC basadas en el uso de tokens que mejoran las prestaciones de aplicaciones de conducción segura basadas en el estándar 802.11p, tanto en autopistas, zonas urbanas, y escenarios con grupos de vehículos. Els diversos tipus d'aplicacions ITS es basen en dos classes de missatges: missatges periòdics coneguts com a beacons i missatges associats a esdeveniments. Els missatges periòdics inclouen informació relativa a la ubicació geogràfica, la velocitat i l'acceleració, entre uns altres, i només són distribuïts entre els vehicles veïns. A diferència d'aquests beacons, els missatges associats a esdeveniments només es generen quan es produeix un esdeveniment crític d'interès general, el qual es propaga dins de l àrea d'interès d'aquest esdeveniment i mentre aquest seguisca actiu. La fiabilitat de l'intercanvi d'informació és un dels principals problemes per a les comunicacions vehicular, principalment perquè les aplicacions de seguretat depenen directament de l'eficàcia d'aquestes transmissions. Un protocol de control d'accés al medi (MAC) ha de garantir la difusió fiable d'informació a tots els vehicles veïns dins d'uns límits màxims de retard, i proporcionar-los les notificacions oportunes respecte a condicions de conducció insegures i altres esdeveniments perillosos. D'altra banda, les aplicacions d'informació i entreteniment, com també les aplicacions orientades al confort, també requereixen transmissions fiables extrema-extrem.     Supporting Internet Access and Quality of Service in Distributed Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

    In this era of wireless hysteria, with continuous technological advances in wireless communication and new wireless technologies becoming standardized at a fast rate, we can expect an increased interest for wireless networks, such as ad hoc and mesh networks. These networks operate in a distributed manner, independent of any centralized device. In order to realize the practical benefits of ad hoc networks, two challenges (among others) need to be considered: distributed QoS guarantees and multi-hop Internet access. In this thesis we present conceivable solutions to both of these problems. An autonomous, stand-alone ad hoc network is useful in many cases, such as search and rescue operations and meetings where participants wish to quickly share information. However, an ad hoc network connected to the Internet is even more desirable. This is because Internet plays an important role in the daily life of many people by offering a broad range of services. In this thesis we present AODV+, which is our solution to achieve this network interconnection between a wireless ad hoc network and the wired Internet. Providing QoS in distributed wireless networks is another challenging, but yet important, task mainly because there is no central device controlling the medium access. In this thesis we propose EDCA with Resource Reservation (EDCA/RR), which is a fully distributed MAC scheme that provides QoS guarantees by allowing applications with strict QoS requirements to reserve transmission time for contention-free medium access. Our scheme is compatible with existing standards and provides both parameterized and prioritized QoS. In addition, we present the Distributed Deterministic Channel Access (DDCA) scheme, which is a multi-hop extension of EDCA/RR and can be used in wireless mesh networks. Finally, we have complemented our simulation studies with real-world ad hoc and mesh network experiments. With the experience from these experiments, we obtained a clear insight into the limitations of wireless channels. We could conclude that a wise design of the network architecture that limits the number of consecutive wireless hops may result in a wireless mesh network that is able to satisfy users’ needs. Moreover, by using QoS mechanisms like EDCA/RR or DDCA we are able to provide different priorities to traffic flows and reserve resources for the most time-critical applications

    Efficient Cross Layer Designs for IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks

    Various properties of wireless networks, such as mobility, frequent disconnections and varying channel conditions, have made it a challenging task to design networking protocols for wireless communications. In this dissertation, we address several problems related to both the routing layer and medium access control (MAC) layer in wireless networks aiming to enhance the network performance. First, we study the effect of the channel noise on the network performance. We present mechanisms to compute energy-efficient paths in noisy environments for ad hoc networks by exploiting the IEEE 802.11 fragmentation mechanism. These mechanisms enhance the network performance up to orders of magnitude in terms of energy and throughput. We also enhance the IEEE 802.11 infrastructure networks with a capability to differentiate between different types of unsuccessful transmissions to enhance the network performance. Second, we study the effects of the physical layer capture phenomena on network performance. We modify the IEEE 802.11 protocol in a way to increase the concurrent transmissions by exploiting the capture phenomena. We analytically study the potential performance enhancement of our mechanism over the original IEEE 802.11. The analysis shows that up to 35% of the IEEE 802.11 blocking decisions are unnecessary. The results are verified by simulation in which we show that our enhanced mechanism can achieve up to 22% more throughput. Finally, we exploit the spatial reuse of the directional antenna in the IEEE 802.11 standards by developing two novel opportunistic enhancement mechanisms. The first mechanism augments the IEEE 802.11 protocol with additional information that gives a node the flexibility to transmit data while other transmissions are in its vicinity. The second mechanism changes the access routines of the IEEE 802.11 data queue. We show analytically how the IEEE 802.11 protocol using directional antenna is conservative in terms of assessing channel availability, with as much as 60% of unnecessary blocking assessments and up to 90% when we alter the accessing mechanism of the data queue. By simulation, we show an improvement in network throughput of 40% in the case of applying the first mechanism, and up to 60% in the case of applying the second mechanism

    Link Scheduling Algorithms For In-Band Full-Duplex Wireless Networks

    In the last two decades, wireless networks and their corresponding data traffic have grown significantly. This is because wireless networks have become an indispens- able and critical communication infrastructure in a modern society. An on-going challenge in communication systems is meeting the continuous increase in traffic de- mands. This is driven by the proliferation of electronic devices such as smartphones with a WiFi interface along with their bandwidth intensive applications. Moreover, in the near future, sensor devices that form the Internet of Things (IoTs) ecosystem will also add to future traffic growth. One promising approach to meet growing traffic demands is to equip nodes with an In-band-Full-Duplex (IBFD) radio. This radio thus allows nodes to transmit and receive data concurrently over the same frequency band. Another approach to in- crease network or link capacity is to exploit the benefits of Multiple-Input-Multiple- Output (MIMO) technologies; namely, (i) spatial diversity gain, which improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and thus has a direct impact on the data rate used by nodes, and (ii) spatial multiplexing gain, whereby nodes are able to form concurrent links to neighbors

    Radio Access Techniques for Energy Effcient and Energy Harvesting based Wireless Sensor Networks

    Traditional Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) rely on batteries with finite stored energy. In the future with billions of such devices, it will be difficult to replace and dispose their batteries, which can cause a huge environmental threat. Hence, research is being done to eliminate batteries from sensor devices and replace them with harvesters. These harvesters can power the sensor network nodes by extracting energy from ambient sources. Harvesters are already being implemented in many real-life applications like structural health monitoring, environment monitoring and body area networks. A sensor network of multiple energy harvesting enabled devices is known as Energy Harvesting based Wireless Sensor Network (EH-WSN). For uninterrupted operation of EH-WSN, radio protocols must consider the energy harvesting constraints; (i) energy harvesting process unpredictability and; (ii) energy harvesting rate variations in time and space. EH-WSN comes with unique traits which discourage the use of existing WSNs radio protocols, as most of existing protocols are focussed on decreasing the energy consumption and increasing the network lifetime. This thesis work focusses on modifying an existing energyefficient Multipath Rings (MPR) routing protocol for low-power and low-bandwidth EH-WSN and evaluating its performance through simulations. Firstly, the topology setup phase is revised by implementing a new ring formation scheme for better data reliability. Secondly, controlled flooding of data packets is used by enabling selective forwarding, which leads to decrease in network traffic and overall energy consumption. Lastly, every node is equipped with a neighbors’ table on-board which helps in making energy-related routing decisions in multi-hop networks. A periodic energy update packet transmission helps in keeping latest neighbor information. This modified version of MPR routing protocol is called Energy Harvesting based Multipath Rings (EH-MPR) routing. This work also provides a comprehensive survey on existing MAC and Routing protocols for energy efficient and energy harvesting based WSNs. Through this work, the main constraints on using existing energy-efficient protocols for EH-WSN are discussed and depicted with the help of network simulations. The effects of using fixed duty cycle for energy harvesting enabled sensor nodes are outlined by simulating T-MAC (adaptive duty cycle) against S-MAC (fixed duty cycle). For all evaluation metrics, T-MAC outperformed S-MAC. Using Castalia’s realistic wireless channel and radio model, EH-MPR is simulated for low-power, low-data rate and low bandwidth (1 MHz) networks where satisfactory results are obtained for sub-GHz frequencies (433 MHz and 868 MHz). Next, the modified EH-MPR protocol is compared with original MPR routing under practical deployment scenarios. The metrics in consideration are successful packet transmissions, energy consumption, energy harvested-to-consumed ratio and failed packets. After thorough simulations, it was concluded that although the packet success rate is approximately equal for both protocols, EH-MPR has advantages over original MPR routing protocol in terms of energy cost and uninterrupted operations
