    Transformer for Object Re-Identification: A Survey

    Object Re-Identification (Re-ID) aims to identify and retrieve specific objects from varying viewpoints. For a prolonged period, this field has been predominantly driven by deep convolutional neural networks. In recent years, the Transformer has witnessed remarkable advancements in computer vision, prompting an increasing body of research to delve into the application of Transformer in Re-ID. This paper provides a comprehensive review and in-depth analysis of the Transformer-based Re-ID. In categorizing existing works into Image/Video-Based Re-ID, Re-ID with limited data/annotations, Cross-Modal Re-ID, and Special Re-ID Scenarios, we thoroughly elucidate the advantages demonstrated by the Transformer in addressing a multitude of challenges across these domains. Considering the trending unsupervised Re-ID, we propose a new Transformer baseline, UntransReID, achieving state-of-the-art performance on both single-/cross modal tasks. Besides, this survey also covers a wide range of Re-ID research objects, including progress in animal Re-ID. Given the diversity of species in animal Re-ID, we devise a standardized experimental benchmark and conduct extensive experiments to explore the applicability of Transformer for this task to facilitate future research. Finally, we discuss some important yet under-investigated open issues in the big foundation model era, we believe it will serve as a new handbook for researchers in this field

    HumanBench: Towards General Human-centric Perception with Projector Assisted Pretraining

    Human-centric perceptions include a variety of vision tasks, which have widespread industrial applications, including surveillance, autonomous driving, and the metaverse. It is desirable to have a general pretrain model for versatile human-centric downstream tasks. This paper forges ahead along this path from the aspects of both benchmark and pretraining methods. Specifically, we propose a \textbf{HumanBench} based on existing datasets to comprehensively evaluate on the common ground the generalization abilities of different pretraining methods on 19 datasets from 6 diverse downstream tasks, including person ReID, pose estimation, human parsing, pedestrian attribute recognition, pedestrian detection, and crowd counting. To learn both coarse-grained and fine-grained knowledge in human bodies, we further propose a \textbf{P}rojector \textbf{A}ssis\textbf{T}ed \textbf{H}ierarchical pretraining method (\textbf{PATH}) to learn diverse knowledge at different granularity levels. Comprehensive evaluations on HumanBench show that our PATH achieves new state-of-the-art results on 17 downstream datasets and on-par results on the other 2 datasets.     Visual Representation Learning with Limited Supervision

    The quality of a Computer Vision system is proportional to the rigor of data representation it is built upon. Learning expressive representations of images is therefore the centerpiece to almost every computer vision application, including image search, object detection and classification, human re-identification, object tracking, pose understanding, image-to-image translation, and embodied agent navigation to name a few. Deep Neural Networks are most often seen among the modern methods of representation learning. The limitation is, however, that deep representation learning methods require extremely large amounts of manually labeled data for training. Clearly, annotating vast amounts of images for various environments is infeasible due to cost and time constraints. This requirement of obtaining labeled data is a prime restriction regarding pace of the development of visual recognition systems. In order to cope with the exponentially growing amounts of visual data generated daily, machine learning algorithms have to at least strive to scale at a similar rate. The second challenge consists in the learned representations having to generalize to novel objects, classes, environments and tasks in order to accommodate to the diversity of the visual world. Despite the evergrowing number of recent publications tangentially addressing the topic of learning generalizable representations, efficient generalization is yet to be achieved. This dissertation attempts to tackle the problem of learning visual representations that can generalize to novel settings while requiring few labeled examples. In this research, we study the limitations of the existing supervised representation learning approaches and propose a framework that improves the generalization of learned features by exploiting visual similarities between images which are not captured by provided manual annotations. Furthermore, to mitigate the common requirement of large scale manually annotated datasets, we propose several approaches that can learn expressive representations without human-attributed labels, in a self-supervised fashion, by grouping highly-similar samples into surrogate classes based on progressively learned representations. The development of computer vision as science is preconditioned upon the seamless ability of a machine to record and disentangle pictures' attributes that were expected to only be conceived by humans. As such, particular interest was dedicated to the ability to analyze the means of artistic expression and style which depicts a more complex task than merely breaking an image down to colors and pixels. The ultimate test for this ability is the task of style transfer which involves altering the style of an image while keeping its content. An effective solution of style transfer requires learning such image representation which would allow disentangling image style and its content. Moreover, particular artistic styles come with idiosyncrasies that affect which content details should be preserved and which discarded. Another pitfall here is that it is impossible to get pixel-wise annotations of style and how the style should be altered. We address this problem by proposing an unsupervised approach that enables encoding the image content in such a way that is required by a particular style. The proposed approach exchanges the style of an input image by first extracting the content representation in a style-aware way and then rendering it in a new style using a style-specific decoder network, achieving compelling results in image and video stylization. Finally, we combine supervised and self-supervised representation learning techniques for the task of human and animals pose understanding. The proposed method enables transfer of the representation learned for recognition of human poses to proximal mammal species without using labeled animal images. This approach is not limited to dense pose estimation and could potentially enable autonomous agents from robots to self-driving cars to retrain themselves and adapt to novel environments based on learning from previous experiences

    Depth Estimation Using 2D RGB Images

    Single image depth estimation is an ill-posed problem. That is, it is not mathematically possible to uniquely estimate the 3rd dimension (or depth) from a single 2D image. Hence, additional constraints need to be incorporated in order to regulate the solution space. As a result, in the first part of this dissertation, the idea of constraining the model for more accurate depth estimation by taking advantage of the similarity between the RGB image and the corresponding depth map at the geometric edges of the 3D scene is explored. Although deep learning based methods are very successful in computer vision and handle noise very well, they suffer from poor generalization when the test and train distributions are not close. While, the geometric methods do not have the generalization problem since they benefit from temporal information in an unsupervised manner. They are sensitive to noise, though. At the same time, explicitly modeling of a dynamic scenes as well as flexible objects in traditional computer vision methods is a big challenge. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, a hybrid method, which benefits from both, is proposed here by extending traditional geometric models’ abilities to handle flexible and dynamic objects in the scene. This is made possible by relaxing geometric computer vision rules from one motion model for some areas of the scene into one for every pixel in the scene. This enables the model to detect even small, flexible, floating debris in a dynamic scene. However, it makes the optimization under-constrained. To change the optimization from under-constrained to over-constrained while maintaining the model’s flexibility, ”moving object detection loss” and ”synchrony loss” are designed. The algorithm is trained in an unsupervised fashion. The primary results are in no way comparable to the current state of the art. Because the training process is so slow, it is difficult to compare it to the current state of the art. Also, the algorithm lacks stability. In addition, the optical flow model is extremely noisy and naive. At the end, some solutions are suggested to address these issues

    Solving Computer Vision Challenges with Synthetic Data

    Computer vision researchers spent a lot of time creating large datasets, yet there is still much information that is difficult to label. Detailed annotations like part segmentation and dense keypoint are expensive to annotate. 3D information requires extra hardware to capture. Besides the labeling cost, an image dataset also lacks the ability to allow an intelligent agent to interact with the world. As a human, we learn through interaction, rather than per-pixel labeled images. To fill in the gap of existing datasets, we propose to build virtual worlds using computer graphics and use generated synthetic data to solve these challenges. In this dissertation, I demonstrate cases where computer vision challenges can be solved with synthetic data. The first part describes our engineering effort about building a simulation pipeline. The second and third part describes using synthetic data to train better models and diagnose trained models. The major challenge for using synthetic data is the domain gap between real and synthetic. In the model training part, I present two cases, which have different characteristics in terms of domain gap. Two domain adaptation methods are proposed, respectively. Synthetic data saves enormous labeling effort by providing detailed ground truth. In the model diagnosis part, I present how to control nuisance factors to analyze model robustness. Finally, I summarize future research directions that can benefit from synthetic data

    Development of artificial neural network-based object detection algorithms for low-cost hardware devices

    Finally, the fourth work was published in the “WCCI” conference in 2020 and consisted of an individuals' position estimation algorithm based on a novel neural network model for environments with forbidden regions, named “Forbidden Regions Growing Neural Gas”.The human brain is the most complex, powerful and versatile learning machine ever known. Consequently, many scientists of various disciplines are fascinated by its structures and information processing methods. Due to the quality and quantity of the information extracted from the sense of sight, image is one of the main information channels used by humans. However, the massive amount of video footage generated nowadays makes it difficult to process those data fast enough manually. Thus, computer vision systems represent a fundamental tool in the extraction of information from digital images, as well as a major challenge for scientists and engineers. This thesis' primary objective is automatic foreground object detection and classification through digital image analysis, using artificial neural network-based techniques, specifically designed and optimised to be deployed in low-cost hardware devices. This objective will be complemented by developing individuals' movement estimation methods by using unsupervised learning and artificial neural network-based models. The cited objectives have been addressed through a research work illustrated in four publications supporting this thesis. The first one was published in the “ICAE” journal in 2018 and consists of a neural network-based movement detection system for Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras deployed in a Raspberry Pi board. The second one was published in the “WCCI” conference in 2018 and consists of a deep learning-based automatic video surveillance system for PTZ cameras deployed in low-cost hardware. The third one was published in the “ICAE” journal in 2020 and consists of an anomalous foreground object detection and classification system for panoramic cameras, based on deep learning and supported by low-cost hardware

    Understanding video through the lens of language

    The increasing abundance of video data online necessitates the development of systems capable of understanding such content. However, building these systems poses significant challenges, including the absence of scalable and robust supervision signals, computational complexity, and multimodal modelling. To address these issues, this thesis explores the role of language as a complementary learning signal for video, drawing inspiration from the success of self-supervised Large Language Models (LLMs) and image-language models. First, joint video-language representations are examined under the text-to-video retrieval task. This includes the study of pre-extracted multimodal features, the influence of contextual information, joint end-to-end learning of both image and video representations, and various frame aggregation methods for long-form videos. In doing so, state-of-the-art performance is achieved across a range of established video-text benchmarks. Second, this work explores the automatic generation of audio description (AD) – narrations describing the visual happenings in a video, for the benefit of visually impaired audiences. An LLM, prompted with multimodal information, including past predictions, and pretrained with partial data sources, is employed for the task. In the process, substantial advancements are achieved in the following areas: efficient speech transcription, long-form visual storytelling, referencing character names, and AD time-point prediction. Finally, audiovisual behaviour recognition is applied to the field of wildlife conservation and ethology. The approach is used to analyse vast video archives of wild primates, revealing insights into individual and group behaviour variations, with the potential for monitoring the effects of human pressures on animal habitats
