    Watch Your Step! Terrain Traversability for Robot Control

    Watch your step! Or perhaps, watch your wheels. Whatever the robot is, if it puts its feet, tracks, or wheels in the wrong place, it might get hurt; and as robots are quickly going from structured and completely known environments towards uncertain and unknown terrain, the surface assessment becomes an essential requirement. As a result, future mobile robots cannot neglect the evaluation of terrain’s structure, according to their driving capabilities. With the objective of filling this gap, the focus of this study was laid on terrain analysis methods, which can be used for robot control with particular reference to autonomous vehicles and mobile robots. Giving an overview of theory related to this topic, the investigation not only covers hardware, such as visual sensors or laser scanners, but also space descriptions, such as digital elevation models and point descriptors, introducing new aspects and characterization of terrain assessment. During the discussion, a wide number of examples and methodologies are exposed according to different tools and sensors, including the description of a recent method of terrain assessment using normal vectors analysis. Indeed, normal vectors has demonstrated great potentialities in the field of terrain irregularity assessment in both on‐road and off‐road environments

    A Neural Model of Visually Guided Steering, Obstacle Avoidance, and Route Selection

    A neural model is developed to explain how humans can approach a goal object on foot while steering around obstacles to avoid collisions in a cluttered environment. The model uses optic flow from a 3D virtual reality environment to determine the position of objects based on motion discontinuities, and computes heading direction, or the direction of self-motion, from global optic flow. The cortical representation of heading interacts with the representations of a goal and obstacles such that the goal acts as an attractor of heading, while obstacles act as repellers. In addition the model maintains fixation on the goal object by generating smooth pursuit eye movements. Eye rotations can distort the optic flow field, complicating heading perception, and the model uses extraretinal signals to correct for this distortion and accurately represent heading. The model explains how motion processing mechanisms in cortical areas MT, MST, and posterior parietal cortex can be used to guide steering.     MRF Stereo Matching with Statistical Estimation of Parameters

    For about the last ten years, stereo matching in computer vision has been treated as a combinatorial optimization problem. Assuming that the points in stereo images form a Markov Random Field (MRF), a variety of combinatorial optimization algorithms has been developed to optimize their underlying cost functions. In many of these algorithms, the MRF parameters of the cost functions have often been manually tuned or heuristically determined for achieving good performance results. Recently, several algorithms for statistical, hence, automatic estimation of the parameters have been published. Overall, these algorithms perform well in labeling, but they lack in performance for handling discontinuity in labeling along the surface borders. In this dissertation, we develop an algorithm for optimization of the cost function with automatic estimation of the MRF parameters – the data and smoothness parameters. Both the parameters are estimated statistically and applied in the cost function with support of adaptive neighborhood defined based on color similarity. With the proposed algorithm, discontinuity handling with higher consistency than of the existing algorithms is achieved along surface borders. The data parameters are pre-estimated from one of the stereo images by applying a hypothesis, called noise equivalence hypothesis, to eliminate interdependency between the estimations of the data and smoothness parameters. The smoothness parameters are estimated applying a combination of maximum likelihood and disparity gradient constraint, to eliminate nested inference for the estimation. The parameters for handling discontinuities in data and smoothness are defined statistically as well. We model cost functions to match the images symmetrically for improved matching performance and also to detect occlusions. Finally, we fill the occlusions in the disparity map by applying several existing and proposed algorithms and show that our best proposed segmentation based least squares algorithm performs better than the existing algorithms. We conduct experiments with the proposed algorithm on publicly available ground truth test datasets provided by the Middlebury College. Experiments show that results better than the existing algorithms’ are delivered by the proposed algorithm having the MRF parameters estimated automatically. In addition, applying the parameter estimation technique in existing stereo matching algorithm, we observe significant improvement in computational time

    Growing interest in autonomous driving (AD) and intelligent vehicles (IVs) is fueled by their promise for enhanced safety, efficiency, and economic benefits. While previous surveys have captured progress in this field, a comprehensive and forward-looking summary is needed. Our work fills this gap through three distinct articles. The first part, a "Survey of Surveys" (SoS), outlines the history, surveys, ethics, and future directions of AD and IV technologies. The second part, "Milestones in Autonomous Driving and Intelligent Vehicles Part I: Control, Computing System Design, Communication, HD Map, Testing, and Human Behaviors" delves into the development of control, computing system, communication, HD map, testing, and human behaviors in IVs. This part, the third part, reviews perception and planning in the context of IVs. Aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in AD and IVs, this work caters to both newcomers and seasoned researchers.     Image based human body rendering via regression & MRF energy minimization

    A machine learning method for synthesising human images is explored to create new images without relying on 3D modelling. Machine learning allows the creation of new images through prediction from existing data based on the use of training images. In the present study, image synthesis is performed at two levels: contour and pixel. A class of learning-based methods is formulated to create object contours from the training image for the synthetic image that allow pixel synthesis within the contours in the second level. The methods rely on applying robust object descriptions, dynamic learning models after appropriate motion segmentation, and machine learning-based frameworks. Image-based human image synthesis using machine learning is a research focus that has recently gained considerable attention in the field of computer graphics. It makes use of techniques from image/motion analysis in computer vision. The problem lies in the estimation of methods for image-based object configuration (i.e. segmentation, contour outline). Using the results of these analysis methods as bases, the research adopts the machine learning approach, in which human images are synthesised by executing the synthesis of contour and pixels through the learning from training image. Firstly, thesis shows how an accurate silhouette is distilled using developed background subtraction for accuracy and efficiency. The traditional vector machine approach is used to avoid ambiguities within the regression process. Images can be represented as a class of accurate and efficient vectors for single images as well as sequences. Secondly, the framework is explored using a unique view of machine learning methods, i.e., support vector regression (SVR), to obtain the convergence result of vectors for contour allocation. The changing relationship between the synthetic image and the training image is expressed as a vector and represented in functions. Finally, a pixel synthesis is performed based on belief propagation. This thesis proposes a novel image-based rendering method for colour image synthesis using SVR and belief propagation for generalisation to enable the prediction of contour and colour information from input colour images. The methods rely on using appropriately defined and robust input colour images, optimising the input contour images within a sparse SVR framework. Firstly, the thesis shows how contour can effectively and efficiently be predicted from small numbers of input contour images. In addition, the thesis exploits the sparse properties of SVR efficiency, and makes use of SVR to estimate regression function. The image-based rendering method employed in this study enables contour synthesis for the prediction of small numbers of input source images. This procedure avoids the use of complex models and geometry information. Secondly, the method used for human body contour colouring is extended to define eight differently connected pixels, and construct a link distance field via the belief propagation method. The link distance, which acts as the message in propagation, is transformed by improving the low-envelope method in fast distance transform. Finally, the methodology is tested by considering human facial and human body clothing information.
