    Stabilization of DC–DC buck converter with unknown constant power load via passivity-based control plus proportion-integration

    Abstract It is known that constant power load (CPL) may cause a negative impedance, which seriously affects the stability of power system. In this paper, a new control algorithm for DC–DC buck converter feeding unknown CPL is proposed. First, under the assumption of known extracted power load, the standard passivity–based control (PBC) is presented to reshape the system energy and compensate for the negative impedance and a proportion‐integration (PI) action around passive output is added to improve disturbance rejection performance, which forms the PBC plus PI (PBC+PI). Then, a parameter estimation algorithm is developed, based on immersion and invariance (I&I) technique, in order to online estimate the extracted power load. In the next step, the online estimation scheme is adopted to construct an adaptive strategy. Finally, the stability analysis of the cascaded system containing a closed‐loop control system and observer error dynamics is conducted. Simulation and experimental results are demonstrated to validate the performance of the proposed controller

    Active damping of a DC network with a constant power load: an adaptive passivity-based control approach

    This paper proposes a nonlinear, adaptive controller to increase the stability margin of a direct-current (DC) small-scale electrical network containing a constant power load, whose value is unknown. Due to their negative incremental impedance, constant power loads are known to reduce the effective damping of a network, leading to voltage oscillations and even to network collapse. To tackle this problem, we consider the incorporation of a controlled DC-DC power converter between the feeder and the constant power load. The design of the control law for the converter is based on the use of standard Passivity-Based Control and Immersion and Invariance theories.     Voltage regulation of an isolated DC microgrid with a constant power load: A passivity-based control design

    Passivity-based nonlinear control for an isolated microgrid system is proposed in this paper. The microgrid consists of a photovoltaic array and a battery energy storage connected to a point of common converters, supplying a constant power load. The purpose of this control strategy is to maintain the output direct current voltage in its reference value under load variations, improving battery interaction. The system is represented by its state space averaged model and the proposed controller is designed using the interconnection and damping assignment strategy, which allows obtaining controller parameters while ensuring the closed-loop system stability. The unknown constant power load is estimated using an observer based on the energy function of the system.     H∞ based control of a DC/DC buck converter feeding a constant power load in uncertain DC microgrid system

    DC microgrids are gaining more and more popularity and are becoming a more viable alternative to AC microgrids (MGs) due to their advantages in terms of simpler power converter stages, flexible control algorithms and the absence of synchronization and reactive power. However, DC-MGs are prone to instability issues associated with the presence of nonlinear loads such as constant power loads (CPL) known by their incremental negative impedance (INI), which may lead to voltage collapse of the main DC Bus. In this paper, -based controller of a source side buck converter is designed to avoid the instability issues caused by the load-side converter acting as a CPL. Besides, the proposed controller allows a perfect rejection of all perturbations that may arise from parameter variations, input voltage and CPL current fluctuations. The design process of H-based controller is based on the Golver Doyle Optimization Algorithm (GDOA), which requires an augmented system extracted from the small-signal model of the DC/DC converter including the mathematical model of parameter variations and overall external perturbations. The​ based controller involves the use of weight functions in order to get the desired performances. The proposed controller is easy to implement and lead to reducing the implementation cost and avoid the use of current measurement that may have some disadvantages. The derived controller is validated by simulation performed in Psim software and experimental setup

    Advanced Modeling, Design, and Control of ac-dc Microgrids

    An interconnected dc grid that comprises resistive and constant-power loads (CPLs) that is fed by Photovoltaic (PV) units is studied first. All the sources and CPLs are connected to the grid via dc-dc buck converters. Nonlinear behavior of PV units in addition to the effect of the negative-resistance CPLs can destabilize the dc grid. A decentralized nonlinear model and control are proposed where an adaptive output-feedback controller is employed to stabilize the dc grid with assured stability through Lyapunov stability method while each converter employs only local measurements. Adaptive Neural Networks (NNs) are utilized to overcome the unknown dynamics of the dc-dc converters at Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and CPLs and those of the interconnected network imposed on the converters. Additionally, the use of the output feedback control makes possible the utilization of other measured signals, in case of loss of main signal, at the converter location and creates measurement redundancy that improves reliability of the dc network. The switching between measurement signals of different types are performed through using the NNs without the need to further tuning. Then, in a small-scale ac grid, PV-based Distributed Generation (DG) units, including dc/dc converters and inverters, are controlled such that mimic a synchronous generator behavior. While other control schemes such as Synchronverters are used to control the inverter frequency and power at a fixed dc link voltage, the proposed approach considers both the dc-link voltage and the inverter ac voltage and frequency regulation. The dc-link capacitor stores kinetic energy similar to the rotor of a synchronous generator, providing inertia and contributes to the system stability. Additionally, a reduced Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) structure is proposed to enhance transient stability of small-scale micro grids. The reduced UPFC model exploits dc link of the DG unit to generate appropriate series voltage and inject it to the power line to enhance transient stability. It employs optimal control to ensure that the stability of the system is realized through minimum cost for the system.     Design and Implementation of Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Tracking Control for a DC-DC Buck Converter

    This paper presents the design and implementation of a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy controller for a DC-DC buck converter using Arduino board. The proposed fuzzy controller is able to pilot the states of the buck converter to track a reference model. The T-S fuzzy model is employed, firstly, to represent exactly the dynamics of the nonlinear buck converter system, and then the considered controller is designed on the basis of a concept called Virtual Desired Variables (VDVs). In this case, a two-stage design procedure is developed: i) determine the reference model according to the desired output voltage, ii) determine the fuzzy controller gains by solving a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). A digital implementation of the proposed T-S fuzzy controller is carried out using the ATmega328P-based Microcontroller of the Arduino Uno board. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme
