    A Formal, Resource Consumption-Preserving Translation of Actors to Haskell

    We present a formal translation of an actor-based language with cooperative scheduling to the functional language Haskell. The translation is proven correct with respect to a formal semantics of the source language and a high-level operational semantics of the target, i.e. a subset of Haskell. The main correctness theorem is expressed in terms of a simulation relation between the operational semantics of actor programs and their translation.     EthIR: A Framework for High-Level Analysis of Ethereum Bytecode

    Analyzing Ethereum bytecode, rather than the source code from which it was generated, is a necessity when: (1) the source code is not available (e.g., the blockchain only stores the bytecode), (2) the information to be gathered in the analysis is only visible at the level of bytecode (e.g., gas consumption is specified at the level of EVM instructions), (3) the analysis results may be affected by optimizations performed by the compiler (thus the analysis should be done ideally after compilation). This paper presents EthIR, a framework for analyzing Ethereum bytecode, which relies on (an extension of) OYENTE, a tool that generates CFGs; EthIR produces from the CFGs, a rule-based representation (RBR) of the bytecode that enables the application of (existing) high-level analyses to infer properties of EVM code

    Special issue on testing, analysis and debugging of concurrent programs

    This special issue concerns a range of issues related to the development of concurrent programs. This is an important topic, because many systems are now either multi-threaded or distributed, and it is well known that concurrency makes testing, analysis and debugging significantly more complicated. Essentially, the alternative interleavings of events can lead to different behaviours, and so any analysis, debugging or testing technique must consider these interleavings. The interest in this topic is reflected in the larger than normal issue, which contains five papers. The papers fall into three groups: we start with a paper on debugging, then have two on static analysis techniques and finally have two on testing. All papers were reviewed in the normal way

    A high-level and scalable approach for generating scale-free graphs using active objects

    The Barabasi-Albert model (BA) is designed to generate scale-free networks using the preferential attachment mechanism. In the preferential attachment (PA) model, new nodes are sequentially introduced to the network and they attach preferentially to existing nodes. PA is a classical model with a natural intuition, great explanatory power and a simple mechanism. Therefore, PA is widely-used for network generation. However the sequential mechanism used in the PA model makes it an inefficient algorithm. The existing parallel approaches, on the other hand, suffer from either changing the original model or explicit complex low-level synchronization mechanisms.     We present a formal translation of a resource-Aware extension of the Abstract Behavioral Specification (ABS) language to the functional language Haskell. ABS is an actor-based language tailored to the modeling of distributed systems. It combines asynchronous method calls with a suspend and resume mode of execution of the method invocations. To cater for the resulting cooperative scheduling of the method invocations of an actor, the translation exploits for the compilation of ABS methods Haskell functions with continuations. The main result of this article is a correctness proof of the translation by means of a simulation relation between a formal semantics of the source language and a high-level operational semantics of the target language, i.e., a subset of Haskell. We further prove that the resource consumption of an ABS program extended with a cost model is preserved over this translation, as we establish an equivalence of the cost of executing the ABS program and its corresponding Haskell-Translation. Concretely, the resources consumed by the original ABS program and those consumed by the Haskell program are the same, considering a cost model. Consequently, the resource bounds automatically inferred for ABS programs extended with a cost model, using resource analysis tools, are sound resource bounds also for the translated Haskell programs. Our experimental evaluation confirms the resource preservation over a set of benchmarks featuring different asymptotic costs

    Static Analysis of Concurrent Programs Based on Behavioral Type Systems

    The strength of program static analysis techniques lies on its ability to detect faulty behaviors prior to the execution. This ability requires that the analysis process foresees any possible runtime scenario. A task which is even more complex in the case of concurrent programs, because of the number of alternatives introduced by the usual nondeterminism. In this particular case, some of the most common faulty behaviors are those about erroneous usage of resources, presence of deadlocks and data race conflicts. Behavioral type systems for programming languages provide a strong mechanism for reasoning on programs actions at static time. In this thesis we discuss two static analysis techniques based on this approach. The first one, targets the resource usage in an ad-hoc language with full-fledged operations for acquiring and releasing virtual machines. The second one, targets the deadlock analysis of Java programs. In both cases we provide a formal proof of correctness, along with prototype implementations that allow practically to test the feasibility of these solutions. These prototypes have also allowed assessing these techniques against others existing in the literature obtaining very encouraging results
