Traffic engineering in ambient networks: challenges and approaches
The focus of this paper is on traffic engineering in ambient networks.
We describe and categorize different alternatives for making the routing more adaptive to the current traffic situation and discuss the challenges that ambient networks pose on traffic engineering methods. One of the main objectives of traffic engineering is to avoid congestion by controlling and optimising the routing function, or in short, to put the traffic where the capacity is. The main challenge for traffic engineering in ambient networks is to cope with the dynamics of both topology and traffic demands. Mechanisms are needed that can handle traffic load dynamics in scenarios with sudden changes in traffic demand and dynamically distribute traffic to benefit from available resources. Trade-offs between optimality, stability and signaling overhead that are important for traffic engineering methods in the fixed Internet becomes even more critical in a dynamic ambient environment
Fast emergency paths schema to overcome transient link failures in ospf routing
A reliable network infrastructure must be able to sustain traffic flows, even
when a failure occurs and changes the network topology. During the occurrence
of a failure, routing protocols, like OSPF, take from hundreds of milliseconds
to various seconds in order to converge. During this convergence period,
packets might traverse a longer path or even a loop. An even worse transient
behaviour is that packets are dropped even though destinations are reachable.
In this context, this paper describes a proactive fast rerouting approach,
named Fast Emergency Paths Schema (FEP-S), to overcome problems originating
from transient link failures in OSPF routing. Extensive experiments were done
using several network topologies with different dimensionality degrees. Results
show that the recovery paths, obtained by FEPS, are shorter than those from
other rerouting approaches and can improve the network reliability by reducing
the packet loss rate during the routing protocols convergence caused by a

We propose a novel distributed approach to exploit sleep mode capabilities of links in an Internet Service Provider network. Differently from other works, neither a central controller, nor the knowledge of the current traffic matrix is assumed, favoring a major step towards making sleep mode enabled networks practical in the current Internet architecture. Our algorithms are able to automatically adapt the state of network links to the actual traffic in the network. Moreover, the required input parameters are intuitive and easy to set. Extensive simulations that consider a real network and traffic demand prove that our algorithms are able to follow the daily variation of traffic, reducing energy consumption up to 70% during off peak time, with little overheads and while guaranteeing Quality of Service constraint
Traffic Engineering in G-MPLS networks with QoS guarantees
In this paper a new Traffic Engineering (TE) scheme to efficiently route sub-wavelength requests with different QoS requirements is proposed for G-MPLS networks. In most previous studies on TE based on dynamic traffic grooming, the objectives were to minimize the rejection probability by respecting the constraints of the optical node architecture, but without considering service differentiation. In practice, some high-priority (HP) connections can instead be characterized by specific constraints on the maximum tolerable end-to-end delay and packet-loss ratio. The proposed solution consists of a distributed two-stage scheme: each time a new request arrives, an on-line dynamic grooming scheme finds a route which fulfills the QoS requirements. If a HP request is blocked at the ingress router, a preemption algorithm is executed locally in order to create room for this traffic. The proposed preemption mechanism minimizes the network disruption, both in term of number of rerouted low-priority connections and new set-up lightpaths, and the signaling complexity. Extensive simulation experiments are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of our scheme
