    Solutions for decision support in university management

    The paper proposes an overview of decision support systems in order to define the role of a system to assist decision in university management. The authors present new technologies and the basic concepts of multidimensional data analysis using models of business processes within the universities. Based on information provided by scientific literature and on the authors’ experience, the study aims to define selection criteria in choosing a development environment for designing a support system dedicated to university management.     The database systems have nowadays an increasingly important role in the knowledge-based society, in which computers have penetrated all fields of activity and the Internet tends to develop worldwide. In the current informatics context, the development of the applications with databases is the work of the specialists. Using databases, reach a database from various applications, and also some of related concepts, have become accessible to all categories of IT users. This paper aims to summarize the curricular area regarding the fundamental database systems issues, which are necessary in order to train specialists in economic informatics higher education. The database systems integrate and interfere with several informatics technologies and therefore are more difficult to understand and use. Thus, students should know already a set of minimum, mandatory concepts and their practical implementation: computer systems, programming techniques, programming languages, data structures.     Easy designing steps of a local data warehouse for possible analytical data processing

    Data warehouse (DW) are used in local or global level as per usages. Most of the DW was designed for online purposes targeting the multinational firms. Majority of local firms directly purchase such readymade DW applications for their usages. Customization, maintenance and enhancement are very costly for them. To provide fruitful e-services, the Government departments, academic Institutes, firms, Telemedicine firms etc. need a DW of themselves. Lack of electricity and internet facilities, especially in rural areas, does not motivate citizen to use the benefits of e-services. In this digital world, every local firm is interested in having their DW that may support strategic and decision making for the business. This study highlights the basic technical designing steps of a local DW. It gives several possible solutions that may arise during the design of the process of Extraction Transformation and Loading (ETL). It gives detail steps to develop the dimension table, fact table and loading data. Data analytics normally answers business questions and suggest future solutions

    Business Intelligence for Small and Middle-Sized Entreprises

    Data warehouses are the core of decision support sys- tems, which nowadays are used by all kind of enter- prises in the entire world. Although many studies have been conducted on the need of decision support systems (DSSs) for small businesses, most of them adopt ex- isting solutions and approaches, which are appropriate for large-scaled enterprises, but are inadequate for small and middle-sized enterprises. Small enterprises require cheap, lightweight architec- tures and tools (hardware and software) providing on- line data analysis. In order to ensure these features, we review web-based business intelligence approaches. For real-time analysis, the traditional OLAP architecture is cumbersome and storage-costly; therefore, we also re- view in-memory processing. Consequently, this paper discusses the existing approa- ches and tools working in main memory and/or with web interfaces (including freeware tools), relevant for small and middle-sized enterprises in decision making

    An integrated approach to deliver OLAP for multidimensional Semantic Web Databases

    Semantic Webs (SW) and web data have become increasingly important sources to support Business Intelligence (BI), but they are difficult to manage due to the exponential increase in their volumes, inconsistency in semantics and complexity in representations. On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is an important tool in analysing large and complex BI data, but it lacks the capability of processing disperse SW data due to the nature of its design. A new concept with a richer vocabulary than the existing ones for OLAP is needed to model distributed multidimensional semantic web databases. A new OLAP framework is developed, with multiple layers including additional vocabulary, extended OLAP operators, and usage of SPARQL to model heterogeneous semantic web data, unify multidimensional structures, and provide new enabling functions for interoperability. The framework is presented with examples to demonstrate its capability to unify existing vocabularies with additional vocabulary elements to handle both informational and topological data in Graph OLAP. The vocabularies used in this work are: the RDF Cube Vocabulary (QB) – proposed by the W3C to allow multi-dimensional, mostly statistical, data to be published in RDF; and the QB4OLAP – a QB extension introducing standard OLAP operators. The framework enables the composition of multiple databases (e.g. energy consumptions and property market values etc.) to generate observations through semantic pipe-like operators. This approach is demonstrated through Use Cases containing highly valuable data collected from a real-life environment. Its usability is proved through the development and usage of semantic pipe-like operators able to deliver OLAP specific functionalities. To the best of my knowledge there is no available data modelling approach handling both informational and topological Semantic Web data, which is designed either to provide OLAP capabilities over Semantic Web databases or to provide a means to connect such databases for further OLAP analysis. The thesis proposes that the presented work provides a wider understanding of: ways to access Semantic Web data; ways to build specialised Semantic Web databases, and, how to enrich them with powerful capabilities for further Business Intelligence
