Variable grouping in multivariate time series via correlation
The decomposition of high-dimensional multivariate time series (MTS) into a number of low-dimensional MTS is a useful but challenging task because the number of possible dependencies between variables is likely to be huge. This paper is about a systematic study of the “variable groupings” problem in MTS. In particular, we investigate different methods of utilizing the information regarding correlations among MTS variables. This type of method does not appear to have been studied before. In all, 15 methods are suggested and applied to six datasets where there are identifiable mixed groupings of MTS variables. A new approach to adaptive fuzzy control: the controller output error method
The controller output error method (COEM) is introduced and applied to the design of adaptive fuzzy control systems. The method employs a gradient descent algorithm to minimize a cost function which is based on the error at the controller output. This contrasts with more conventional methods which use the error at the plant output. The cost function is minimized by adapting some or all of the parameters of the fuzzy controller. The proposed adaptive fuzzy controller is applied to the adaptive control of a nonlinear plant and is shown to be capable of providing good overall system performance
Using fuzzy logic to integrate neural networks and knowledge-based systems
Outlined here is a novel hybrid architecture that uses fuzzy logic to integrate neural networks and knowledge-based systems. The author's approach offers important synergistic benefits to neural nets, approximate reasoning, and symbolic processing. Fuzzy inference rules extend symbolic systems with approximate reasoning capabilities, which are used for integrating and interpreting the outputs of neural networks. The symbolic system captures meta-level information about neural networks and defines its interaction with neural networks through a set of control tasks. Fuzzy action rules provide a robust mechanism for recognizing the situations in which neural networks require certain control actions. The neural nets, on the other hand, offer flexible classification and adaptive learning capabilities, which are crucial for dynamic and noisy environments. By combining neural nets and symbolic systems at their system levels through the use of fuzzy logic, the author's approach alleviates current difficulties in reconciling differences between low-level data processing mechanisms of neural nets and artificial intelligence systems
How to cluster in parallel with neural networks
Partitioning a set of N patterns in a d-dimensional metric space into K clusters - in a way that those in a given cluster are more similar to each other than the rest - is a problem of interest in astrophysics, image analysis and other fields. As there are approximately K(N)/K (factorial) possible ways of partitioning the patterns among K clusters, finding the best solution is beyond exhaustive search when N is large. Researchers show that this problem can be formulated as an optimization problem for which very good, but not necessarily optimal solutions can be found by using a neural network. To do this the network must start from many randomly selected initial states. The network is simulated on the MPP (a 128 x 128 SIMD array machine), where researchers use the massive parallelism not only in solving the differential equations that govern the evolution of the network, but also by starting the network from many initial states at once, thus obtaining many solutions in one run. Researchers obtain speedups of two to three orders of magnitude over serial implementations and the promise through Analog VLSI implementations of speedups comensurate with human perceptual abilities
A proposal of an architecture for the coordination level of intelligent machines
The issue of obtaining a practical, structured, and detailed description of an architecture for the Coordination Level of Center for Intelligent Robotic Systems for Sapce Exploration (CIRSSE) Testbed Intelligent Controller is addressed. Previous theoretical and implementation works were the departure point for the discussion. The document is organized as follows: after this introductory section, section 2 summarizes the overall view of the Intelligent Machine (IM) as a control system, proposing a performance measure on which to base its design. Section 3 addresses with some detail implementation issues. An hierarchic petri-net with feedback-based learning capabilities is proposed. Finally, section 4 is an attempt to address the feedback problem. Feedback is used for two functions: error recovery and reinforcement learning of the correct translations for the petri-net transitions
