    Triple correlation for detection of damage-related nonlinearities in composite structures

    Nonlinear effects in vibration responses are investigated for the undamaged composite plate and the composite plate with a delamination. The analysis is focused on higher harmonic generation in vibration responses for various excitation amplitude levels. This effect is investigated using the triple correlation technique. The dynamics of composite plate was modelled using two-dimensional finite elements and the classical lamination theory. The doubled-node approach was used to model delamination area. Mode shapes and natural frequencies were estimated based on numerical models. Next, the delamination divergence analysis was used to obtain relative displacements for delaminated plies. Experimental modal analysis test was carried out to verify the numerical models. The two strongest vibration modes as well as two vibration modes with the smallest and largest motion level of delaminated plies were selected for nonlinear vibration test. The Fisher criterion was employed to verify the effectiveness and confidence level of the proposed technique. The results show that the method can be used not only to reveal nonlinearities, but also to reliably detect impact damage in composites. These results are confirmed using the statistical analysis

    Smart monitoring of aeronautical composites plates based on electromechanical impedance measurements and artificial neural networks

    This paper presents a structural health monitoring (SHM) method for in situ damage detection and localization in carbon fiber reinforced plates (CFRPs). The detection is achieved using the electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique employing piezoelectric transducers as high-frequency modal sensors. Numerical simulations based on the finite element method are carried out so as to simulate more than a hundred damage scenarios. Damage metrics are then used to quantify and detect changes between the electromechanical impedance spectrum of a pristine and damaged structure. The localization process relies on artificial neural networks (ANNs) whose inputs are derived from a principal component analysis of the damage metrics. It is shown that the resulting ANN can be used as a tool to predict the in-plane position of a single damage in a laminated composite plate

    A stable and accurate control-volume technique based on integrated radial basis function networks for fluid-flow problems

    Radial basis function networks (RBFNs) have been widely used in solving partial differential equations as they are able to provide fast convergence. Integrated RBFNs have the ability to avoid the problem of reduced convergence-rate caused by differentiation. This paper is concerned with the use of integrated RBFNs in the context of control-volume discretisations for the simulation of fluid-flow problems. Special attention is given to (i) the development of a stable high-order upwind scheme for the convection term and (ii) the development of a local high-order approximation scheme for the diffusion term. Benchmark problems including the lid-driven triangular-cavity flow are employed to validate the present technique. Accurate results at high values of the Reynolds number are obtained using relatively-coarse grids

    Linear and non-linear dynamic analyses of sandwich panels with face sheet-tocore debonding

    А survey of recent developments in the dynamic analysis of sandwich panels with face sheet-to-core debonding is presented. The finite element method within the ABAQUSTM code is utilized. The emphasis is directed to the procedures used to elaborate linear and non-linear models and to predict dynamic response of the sandwich panels. Recently developed models are presented, which can be applied for structural health monitoring algorithms of real-scale sandwich panels. First, various popular theories of intact sandwich panels are briefly mentioned and a model is proposed to effectively analyse the modal dynamics of debonded and damaged (due to impact) sandwich panels. The influence of debonding size, form and location, and number of such damage on the modal characteristics of sandwich panels are shown. For nonlinear analysis, models based on implicit and explicit time integration schemes are presented and dynamic response gained with those models are discussed. Finally, questions related to debonding progression at the face sheet-core interface when dynamic loading continues with time are briefly highlighted

    Damage location method for thin composites structures - application to an aircraft door

    Piezoelectric sensors are widely used for Structure Health Monitoring (SHM) technique due to their high-frequency capability. In particular, electromechanical impedance (EMI) techniques give simple and low cost solutions for detecting damage in composite structures. For example, damage indicators computed from EMI deviations between the pristine structure and the damaged structure can be compared to a threshold in order to point damage. When it is question of damage localization, the simple analysis of the electromechanical impedance fails to furnish enough information. We propose a method based both on EMI damage indicators and on the acoustic attenuation level to locate damage. One of the main advantages of our method, so called data driven method, is that only experimental data are used as inputs for our algorithms. It does not rely on any model

    Influence of geometry, elasticity properties and boundary conditions on the Mode I purity in sandwich composites

    The present work addresses the problem of skin/core debonding in sandwich materials. The main goal is to carry out parametric analyses for studying the influence of various materials, geometrical parameters and boundary conditions of sandwich fracture specimens such as a Single Cantilever Beam and a Double Cantilever Beam on the skin/core opening (KI ) and shearing (KII ) modes. The analyses have been performed by means of fracture mechanics tools implemented into the commercial finite element code ABAQUS™. A two-dimensional model of the fracture specimens has been developed with plane strain finite elements. The dependence of the stress intensity factors in the sandwich specimens on the skin thickness, ratio between the Young’s moduli of the skin and core materials and boundary conditions imposed on the specimens has been examined under quasi-static loading by using the interaction integral method

    Development of a Damage Quantification Model for Composite Skin-Stiffener Structures

    The development of a model-based approach for a damage severity assessment applied on a complex composite skin structure with stiffeners is presented in this paper. Earlier investigations on composite structures with stiffeners revealed that a vibration based structural health monitoring approach, employing the Modal Strain Energy Damage Index (MSE-DI) algorithm can detect and localise delaminations. The next step, performed in the presented part of the research, is to assess the severity of the damage. It is shown that combining results from a fre-quency based analysis and from a modal strain energy based analysis can enhance the quantifica-tion of the severity estimation. This conclusion was drawn by analysing the effect of small masses that were added at a specific location in to mimic a damage, but maintain reversibility of the dam-age.     Structural health monitoring of offshore wind turbines: A review through the Statistical Pattern Recognition Paradigm

    Offshore Wind has become the most profitable renewable energy source due to the remarkable development it has experienced in Europe over the last decade. In this paper, a review of Structural Health Monitoring Systems (SHMS) for offshore wind turbines (OWT) has been carried out considering the topic as a Statistical Pattern Recognition problem. Therefore, each one of the stages of this paradigm has been reviewed focusing on OWT application. These stages are: Operational Evaluation; Data Acquisition, Normalization and Cleansing; Feature Extraction and Information Condensation; and Statistical Model Development. It is expected that optimizing each stage, SHMS can contribute to the development of efficient Condition-Based Maintenance Strategies. Optimizing this strategy will help reduce labor costs of OWTs׳ inspection, avoid unnecessary maintenance, identify design weaknesses before failure, improve the availability of power production while preventing wind turbines׳ overloading, therefore, maximizing the investments׳ return. In the forthcoming years, a growing interest in SHM technologies for OWT is expected, enhancing the potential of offshore wind farm deployments further offshore. Increasing efficiency in operational management will contribute towards achieving UK׳s 2020 and 2050 targets, through ultimately reducing the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE)
