    Review of recent research towards power cable life cycle management

    Power cables are integral to modern urban power transmission and distribution systems. For power cable asset managers worldwide, a major challenge is how to manage effectively the expensive and vast network of cables, many of which are approaching, or have past, their design life. This study provides an in-depth review of recent research and development in cable failure analysis, condition monitoring and diagnosis, life assessment methods, fault location, and optimisation of maintenance and replacement strategies. These topics are essential to cable life cycle management (LCM), which aims to maximise the operational value of cable assets and is now being implemented in many power utility companies. The review expands on material presented at the 2015 JiCable conference and incorporates other recent publications. The review concludes that the full potential of cable condition monitoring, condition and life assessment has not fully realised. It is proposed that a combination of physics-based life modelling and statistical approaches, giving consideration to practical condition monitoring results and insulation response to in-service stress factors and short term stresses, such as water ingress, mechanical damage and imperfections left from manufacturing and installation processes, will be key to success in improved LCM of the vast amount of cable assets around the world

    Microwave reflectometric systems and monitoring apparatus for diffused-sensing applications

    Most sensing networks rely on punctual/local sensors; they thus lack the ability to spatially resolve the quantity to be monitored (e.g. a temperature or humidity profile) without relying on the deployment of numerous inline sensors. Currently, most quasi-distributed or distributed sensing technologies rely on the use of optical fibre systems. However, these are generally expensive, which limits their large-scale adoption. Recently, elongated sensing elements have been successfully used with time-domain reflectometry (TDR) to implement diffused monitoring solutions. The advantage of TDR is that it is a relatively low-cost technology, with adequate measurement accuracy and the potential to be customised to suit the specific needs of different application contexts in the 4.0 era. Based on these considerations, this paper addresses the design, implementation and experimental validation of a novel generation of elongated sensing element networks, which can be permanently installed in the systems that need to be monitored and used for obtaining the diffused profile of the quantity to be monitored. Three applications are considered as case studies: monitoring the irrigation process in agriculture, leak detection in underground pipes and the monitoring of building structures

    This is the second half of a two paper series covering aspects of the no fault found (NFF) phenomenon, which is highly challenging and is becoming even more important due to increasing complexity and criticality of technical systems. Part 1 introduced the fundamental concept of unknown failures from an organizational, behavioral and cultural stand point. It also reported an industrial outlook to the problem, recent procedural standards, whilst discussing the financial implications and safety concerns. In this issue, the authors examine the technical aspects, reviewing the common causes of NFF failures in electronic, software and mechanical systems. This is followed by a survey on technological techniques actively being used to reduce the consequence of such instances. After discussing improvements in testability, the article identifies gaps in literature and points out the core areas that should be focused in the future. Special attention is paid to the recent trends on knowledge sharing and troubleshooting tools; with potential research on technical diagnosis being enumerated

    Intermittent fault diagnosis and health monitoring for electronic interconnects

    Literature survey and correspondence with industrial sector shows that No-Fault-Found (NFF) is a major concern in through life engineering services, especially for defence, aerospace, and other transport industry. There are various occurrences and root causes that result in NFF events but intermittent interconnections are the most frustrating. This is because it disappears while testing, and missed out by diagnostic equipment. This thesis describes the challenging and most important area of intermittent fault detection and health monitoring that focuses towards NFF situation in electronics interconnections. After introduction, this thesis starts with literature survey and describes financial impact on aerospace and other transport industry. It highlights NFF technologies and discuss different facts and their impact on NFF. Then It goes into experimental study that how repeatedly intermittent fault could be replicated. It describes a novel fault replicator that can generate repeatedly IFs for further experimental study on diagnosis techniques/algorithms. The novel IF replicator provide for single and multipoint intermittent connection. The experimental work focuses on mechanically induced intermittent conditions in connectors.     A Concept of Operations for an Integrated Vehicle Health Assurance System

    This document describes a Concept of Operations (ConOps) for an Integrated Vehicle Health Assurance System (IVHAS). This ConOps is associated with the Maintain Vehicle Safety (MVS) between Major Inspections Technical Challenge in the Vehicle Systems Safety Technologies (VSST) Project within NASA s Aviation Safety Program. In particular, this document seeks to describe an integrated system concept for vehicle health assurance that integrates ground-based inspection and repair information with in-flight measurement data for airframe, propulsion, and avionics subsystems. The MVS Technical Challenge intends to maintain vehicle safety between major inspections by developing and demonstrating new integrated health management and failure prevention technologies to assure the integrity of vehicle systems between major inspection intervals and maintain vehicle state awareness during flight. The approach provided by this ConOps is intended to help optimize technology selection and development, as well as allow the initial integration and demonstration of these subsystem technologies over the 5 year span of the VSST program, and serve as a guideline for developing IVHAS technologies under the Aviation Safety Program within the next 5 to 15 years. A long-term vision of IVHAS is provided to describe a basic roadmap for more intelligent and autonomous vehicle systems

    A review of automated solar photovoltaic defect detection systems : approaches, challenges, and future orientations

    The development of Photovoltaic (PV) technology has paved the path to the exponential growth of solar cell deployment worldwide. Nevertheless, the energy efficiency of solar cells is often limited by resulting defects that can reduce their performance and lifespan. Therefore, it is crucial to identify a set of defect detection approaches for predictive maintenance and condition monitoring of PV modules. This paper presents a comprehensive review of different data analysis methods for defect detection of PV systems with a high categorisation granularity in terms of types and approaches for each technique. Such approaches, introduced in the literature, were categorised into Imaging-Based Techniques (IBTs) and Electrical Testing Techniques (ETTs). Although several review papers have investigated recent solar cell defect detection techniques, they do not provide a comprehensive investigation including IBTs and ETTs with a greater granularity of the different types of each for PV defect detection systems. Types of IBTs were categorised into Infrared Thermography (IRT), Electroluminescence (EL) imaging, and Light Beam Induced Current (LBIC). On the other hand, ETTs were categorised into Current-Voltage (I-V) characteristics analysis, Earth Capacitance Measurements (ECM), Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), Power Losses Analysis (PLA), and Voltage and Current Measurements (VCM). Approaches based on digital/signal processing and Machine Learning (ML) models for each method are included where relevant. Moreover, the paper critically analyses the advantages and disadvantages of each of the adopted techniques, which can be referred to by future studies to identify the most suitable method considering the use-case’s requirements and setting. The adoption of each of the reviewed techniques depends on several factors, including the deployment scale, the targeted defects for detection, and the required location of defect analysis in the PV system, which are expanded further in the presented analysis. From a high-level perspective, while IBTs provide a high-resolution visual representation of the module surface, allowing for the detection and diagnosis of small structural defects that may be missed by other techniques, ETTs can detect electrical faults beyond the PV module’s surface. On the IBT level, the most notable adopted techniques in the literature are IRT- and EL-based. While IRT techniques are more practical for large-scale applications than EL imaging, the latter is considered a non-intrusive technique that is highly efficient in localising defects of solar cells. The paper also discusses challenges observed in the state-of-the-art related to data availability, real-time monitoring, accurate measurements, computational efficiency, and dataset distribution, and reviews data pre-processing and augmentation approaches that can address some of these challenges. Furthermore, potential future orientations are identified, addressing the limitations of PV defect detection systems

    dissertationThree major catastrophic failures in photovoltaic (PV) arrays are ground-faults, line-to-line faults, and arc faults. Although the number of such failures is few, recent fire events on April 5, 2009, in Bakersfield, California, and April 16, 2011, in Mount Holly, North Carolina suggest the need for improvements in present fault detection and mitigation techniques, as well as amendments to existing codes and standards to avoid such accidents. A fault prediction and detection technique for PV arrays based on spread spectrum time domain reflectometry (SSTDR) has been proposed and was successfully implemented. Unlike other conventional techniques, SSTDR does not depend on the amplitude of the fault-current. Therefore, SSTDR can be used in the absence of solar irradiation as well. However, wide variation in impedance throughout different materials and interconnections makes fault locating more challenging than prediction/detection of faults. Another application of SSTDR in PV systems is the measurement of characteristic impedance of power components for condition monitoring purposes. Any characteristic variations in one component will simultaneously alter the operating conditions of other components in a closed-loop system, resulting in a shift in overall reliability profile. This interdependence makes the reliability of a converter a complex function of time and operating conditions. Details of this failure mode, mechanism, and effect analysis (FMMEA) have been developed. By knowing the present state of health and the remaining useful life (RUL) of a power converter, it is possible to reduce the maintenance cost for expensive high-power converters by facilitating a reliability centered maintenance (RCM) scheme. This research is a step forward toward power converter reliability analysis since the cumulative effect of multiple degraded components has been considered here for the first time in order to estimate reliability of a power converter

    High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC): Technical Design Report

    The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 9000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its instantaneous luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total number of collisions) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require new infrastructures (underground and on surface) and over a decade to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), relies on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11–12 Tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 100 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation, all of which required several years of dedicated R&D effort on a global international level. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the project and is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of the HL-LHC
