4th International Conference on Open RepositoriesThis presentation was part of the session : Conference PostersNORA (NERC Open Research Archive) is the repository for the peer-reviewed output of the UK's Natural Environment Research Council, covering atmospheric science, earth science, earth observation, environmental maths and statistics, marine, polar, science based archaeology, technology and e-science, terrestrial and freshwater science. NORA phase 1 went live in August 2007 and now has over 5000 entries. With phase 2 we are looking to develop a publication management workflow, add an internal repository, and improve the output of statistics and management information

Opening Paragraph Lieux de Memoire, or places of memory, are symbolic sites of national identity. Defined in Le Grand Robert de la langue franfaise, the term is attributed to French historian Pierre Nora. Nora has compiled two large project anthologies and several individual books of essays by various authors that identify and reflect upon symbolic sites of great national importance throughout France. Nora\u27s various collections of work, span over seven volumes, six thousand pages ) and more than one hundred and thirty authors (Le Goff 118). The particular project of Nora\u27s that I will focus on, titled Realms of Memory: The Construction of the French Past, includes: Volume 1: Conflicts and Divisions, Volume 2: Traditions, and Volume 3: Symbols. Here, I will examine and apply theories from Nora\u27s third and final volume of this project, Symbols

All Rights Reserved.NorA is the best studied efflux system of Staphylococcus aureus and therefore frequently used as a model for investigating efflux-mediated resistance in this pathogen. NorA activity is associated with resistance to fluoroquinolones, several antiseptics and disinfectants and several reports have pointed out the role of efflux systems, including NorA, as a first-line response to antimicrobials in S. aureus. Genetic diversity studies of the gene norA have described three alleles; norAI, norAII and norAIII. However, the epidemiology of these alleles and their impact on NorA activity remains unclear. Additionally, increasing studies do not account for norA variability when establishing relations between resistance phenotypes and norA presence or reported absence, which actually corresponds, as we now demonstrate, to different norA alleles. In the present study we assessed the variability of the norA gene present in the genome of over 1,000 S. aureus isolates, corresponding to 112 S. aureus strains with whole genome sequences publicly available; 917 MRSA strains sourced from a London-based study and nine MRSA isolates collected in a major Hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. Our analyses show that norA is part of the core genome of S. aureus. It also suggests that occurrence of norA variants reflects the population structure of this major pathogen. Overall, this work highlights the ubiquitous nature of norA in S. aureus which must be taken into account when studying the role played by this important determinant on S. aureus resistance to antimicrobials.publishersversionpublishe

Implications of Non-Operating Room Anesthesia Policy for Operating Room Efficiency

This thesis focuses on examining the use of Non-Operating Room Anesthesia (NORA) policy in Operating Room (OR) scheduling. A NORA policy involves a practice whereby the administration of anesthesia stage is performed outside the OR. The goal of the thesis is to determine whether NORA policy can improve OR efficiency measured by the performance of total costs, which consists of a weighted sum of patient waiting time, OR overtime and idle time. A simulation optimization method is adopted to find near-optimal schedules for elective surgeries in an outpatient setting. The results of a traditional OR scheduling model, where all stages of the surgery are performed in the OR, will be compared to the results of a NORA OR model where the initial anesthesia stage is performed outside of the OR. Two cases are considered for the NORA model given the decrease on mean durations: (1) a model with the same number of surgery appointments and shorter session length and (2) a models with the same session length and more surgery appointments. . The impact of a NORA policy on OR performance is further analyzed by considering scenarios that capture Surgery duration variability and mean surgery durations which are two traits for surgeries that have been shown to impact OR performance. This thesis aims to investigate how a NORA policy performs when standard deviations and mean surgery durations change. The results show that NORA policy can improve OR efficiency in all settings
