    Effective Target Aware Visual Navigation for UAVs

    In this paper we propose an effective vision-based navigation method that allows a multirotor vehicle to simultaneously reach a desired goal pose in the environment while constantly facing a target object or landmark. Standard techniques such as Position-Based Visual Servoing (PBVS) and Image-Based Visual Servoing (IBVS) in some cases (e.g., while the multirotor is performing fast maneuvers) do not allow to constantly maintain the line of sight with a target of interest. Instead, we compute the optimal trajectory by solving a non-linear optimization problem that minimizes the target re-projection error while meeting the UAV's dynamic constraints. The desired trajectory is then tracked by means of a real-time Non-linear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC): this implicitly allows the multirotor to satisfy both the required constraints. We successfully evaluate the proposed approach in many real and simulated experiments, making an exhaustive comparison with a standard approach.Comment: Conference paper at "European Conference on Mobile Robotics" (ECMR) 201

    Backpropagating constraints-based trajectory tracking control of a quadrotor with constrained actuator dynamics and complex unknowns

    In this paper, a backpropagating constraints-based trajectory tracking control (BCTTC) scheme is addressed for trajectory tracking of a quadrotor with complex unknowns and cascade constraints arising from constrained actuator dynamics, including saturations and dead zones. The entire quadrotor system including actuator dynamics is decomposed into five cascade subsystems connected by intermediate saturated nonlinearities. By virtue of the cascade structure, backpropagating constraints (BCs) on intermediate signals are derived from constrained actuator dynamics suffering from nonreversible rotations and nonnegative squares of rotors, and decouple subsystems with saturated connections. Combining with sliding-mode errors, BC-based virtual controls are individually designed by addressing underactuation and cascade constraints. In order to remove smoothness requirements on intermediate controls, first-order filters are employed, and thereby contributing to backstepping-like subcontrollers synthesizing in a recursive manner. Moreover, universal adaptive compensators are exclusively devised to dominate intermediate tracking residuals and complex unknowns. Eventually, the closed-loop BCTTC system stability can be ensured by the Lyapunov synthesis, and trajectory tracking errors can be made arbitrarily small.     Experimental Investigation of Shrouded Rotor Micro Air Vehicle in Hover and in Edgewise Gusts

    Due to the hover capability of rotary wing Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs), it is of interest to improve their aerodynamic performance, and hence hover endurance (or payload capability). In this research, a shrouded rotor conguration is studied and implemented, that has the potential to oer two key operational benets: enhanced system thrust for a given input power, and improved structural rigidity and crashworthiness of an MAV platform. The main challenges involved in realising such a system for a lightweight craft are: design of a lightweight and stiff shroud, and increased sensitivity to external flow disturbances that can affect flight stability. These key aspects are addressed and studied in order to assess the capability of the shrouded rotor as a platform of choice for MAV applications. A fully functional shrouded rotor vehicle (disk loading 60 N/m2) was designed and constructed with key shroud design variables derived from previous studies on micro shrouded rotors. The vehicle weighed about 280 g (244 mm rotor diameter). The shrouded rotor had a 30% increase in power loading in hover compared to an unshrouded rotor. Due to the stiff, lightweight shroud construction, a net payload benefit of 20-30 g was achieved. The different components such as the rotor, stabilizer bar, yaw control vanes and the shroud were systematically studied for system efficiency and overall aerodynamic improvements. Analysis of the data showed that the chosen shroud dimensions was close to optimum for a design payload of 250 g. Risk reduction prototypes were built to sequentially arrive at the nal conguration. In order to prevent periodic oscillations in flight, a hingeless rotor was incorporated in the shroud. The vehicle was successfully flight tested in hover with a proportional-integral-derivative feedback controller. A flybarless rotor was incorporated for efficiency and control moment improvements. Time domain system identification of the attitude dynamics of the flybar and flybarless rotor vehicle was conducted about hover. Controllability metrics were extracted based on controllability gramian treatment for the flybar and flybarless rotor. In edgewise gusts, the shrouded rotor generated up to 3 times greater pitching moment and 80% greater drag than an equivalent unshrouded rotor. In order to improve gust tolerance and control moments, rotor design optimizations were made by varying solidity, collective, operating RPM and planform. A rectangular planform rotor at a collective of 18 deg was seen to offer the highest control moments. The shrouded rotor produced 100% higher control moments due to pressure asymmetry arising from cyclic control of the rotor. It was seen that the control margin of the shrouded rotor increased as the disk loading increased, which is however deleterious in terms of hover performance. This is an important trade-off that needs to be considered. The flight performance of the vehicle in terms of edgewise gust disturbance rejection was tested in a series of bench top and free flight tests. A standard table fan and an open jet wind tunnel setup was used for bench top setup. The shrouded rotor had an edgewise gust tolerance of about 3 m/s while the unshrouded rotor could tolerate edgewise gusts greater than 5 m/s. Free flight tests on the vehicle, using VICON for position feedback control, indicated the capability of the vehicle to recover from gust impulse inputs from a pedestal fan at low gust values (up to 3 m/s)

    Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Multi-Micro Aerial Vehicle Robust Collision Avoidance

    Multiple multirotor Micro Aerial Vehicles sharing the same airspace require a reliable and robust collision avoidance technique. In this paper we address the problem of multi-MAV reactive collision avoidance. A model-based controller is employed to achieve simultaneously reference trajectory tracking and collision avoidance. Moreover, we also account for the uncertainty of the state estimator and the other agents position and velocity uncertainties to achieve a higher degree of robustness. The proposed approach is decentralized, does not require collision-free reference trajectory and accounts for the full MAV dynamics.     Design and Analysis of Stop-Rotor Multimode Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

    abstract: The objective of this work is to develop a Stop-Rotor Multimode UAV. This UAV is capable of vertical take-off and landing like a helicopter and can convert from a helicopter mode to an airplane mode in mid-flight. Thus, this UAV can hover as a helicopter and achieve high mission range of an airplane. The stop-rotor concept implies that in mid-flight the lift generating helicopter rotor stops and rotates the blades into airplane wings. The thrust in airplane mode is then provided by a pusher propeller. The aircraft configuration presents unique challenges in flight dynamics, modeling and control. In this thesis a mathematical model along with the design and simulations of a hover control will be presented. In addition, the discussion of the performance in fixed-wing flight, and the autopilot architecture of the UAV will be presented.     Analysis and Realization of a Dual-Nacelle Tiltrotor Aerial Vehicle

    Unmanned aerial vehicles are a salient solution for rapid deployment in disaster relief, search and rescue, and warfare operations. In these scenarios, the agility, maneuverability and speed of the UAV are vital components towards saving human lives, successfully completing a mission, or stopping dangerous threats. Hence, a high speed, highly agile, and small footprint unmanned aerial vehicle capable of carrying minimal payloads would be the best suited design for completing the desired task. This thesis presents the design, analysis, and realization of a dual-nacelle tiltrotor unmanned aerial vehicle. The design of the dual-nacelle tiltrotor aerial vehicle utilizes two propellers for thrust with the ability to rotate the propellers about the sagittal plane to provide thrust vectoring. The dual-nacelle thrust vectoring of the aerial vehicle provides a slimmer profile, a smaller hover footprint, and allows for rapid aggressive maneuvers while maintaining a desired speed to quickly navigate through cluttered environments. The dynamic model of the dual-nacelle tiltrotor design was derived using the Newton-Euler method and a nonlinear PD controller was developed for spatial trajectory tracking. The dynamic model and nonlinear PD controller were implemented in Matlab Simulink using SimMechanics. The simulation verified the ability of the controlled tiltrotor to track a helical trajectory. To study the scalability of the design, two prototypes were developed: a micro scale tiltrotor prototype, 50mm wide and weighing 30g, and a large scale tiltrotor prototype, 0.5m wide and weighing 2.8kg. The micro scale tiltrotor has a 1.6:1 thrust to weight ratio with an estimated flight time of 6 mins in hover. The large scale tiltrotor has a 2.3:1 thrust to weight ratio with an estimated flight time of 4 mins in hover. A detailed realization of the tiltrotor prototypes is provided with discussions on mechanical design, fabrication, hardware selection, and software implementation. Both tiltrotor prototypes successfully demonstrated hovering, altitude, and yaw maneuvering while tethered and remotely controlled. The developed prototypes provide a framework for further research and development of control strategies for the aggressive maneuvering of underactuated tiltrotor aerial vehicles
