    Overcoming barriers and increasing independence: service robots for elderly and disabled people

    This paper discusses the potential for service robots to overcome barriers and increase independence of elderly and disabled people. It includes a brief overview of the existing uses of service robots by disabled and elderly people and advances in technology which will make new uses possible and provides suggestions for some of these new applications. The paper also considers the design and other conditions to be met for user acceptance. It also discusses the complementarity of assistive service robots and personal assistance and considers the types of applications and users for which service robots are and are not suitable

    Current state of digital signal processing in myoelectric interfaces and related applications

    This review discusses the critical issues and recommended practices from the perspective of myoelectric interfaces. The major benefits and challenges of myoelectric interfaces are evaluated. The article aims to fill gaps left by previous reviews and identify avenues for future research. Recommendations are given, for example, for electrode placement, sampling rate, segmentation, and classifiers. Four groups of applications where myoelectric interfaces have been adopted are identified: assistive technology, rehabilitation technology, input devices, and silent speech interfaces.     Marathi Speech Interface System for the Activation and Controlling of Electronic Equipment

    This paper provides a framework to design Marathi speech recognition interface system to control the electronic equipment like fan and electric bulb. This system is designed using HM2007 speech recognition kit. HM2007 is a single chip CMOS LSI circuit with on chip front end and analysis. The interface system is trained with the database of total 15 most commonly used words to activate and control the equipment. The training and testing of Marathi speech interface system is done in noisy and noise free environment. The performance of MSAEE system calculated on the basis of False Acceptance Rate (FAR), False Recognition Rate (FRR), Word Error Rate (WER), sensitivity, specificity and F-Measure. The average accuracy obtained in noisy environment is 88.77% whereas the accuracy of 98.88% is achieved without noise. The sensitivity value is superior then specificity means MSAEE system is robust and dynamic. FAR values is most significant than value of FRR so, it means MSAEE system proved a best solution for controlling electrical appliances. HM2007 is found to be most promising speech recognition IC, through which many speech interface application can be built that will be beneficial to people with less mobility.     Semi-autonomous robotic wheelchair controlled with low throughput human- machine interfaces

    For a wide range of people with limited upper- and lower-body mobility, interaction with robots remains a challenging problem. Due to various health conditions, they are often unable to use standard joystick interface, most of wheelchairs are equipped with. To accommodate this audience, a number of alternative human-machine interfaces have been designed, such as single switch, sip-and-puff, brain-computer interfaces. They are known as low throughput interfaces referring to the amount of information that an operator can pass into the machine. Using them to control a wheelchair poses a number of challenges. This thesis makes several contributions towards the design of robotic wheelchairs controlled via low throughput human-machine interfaces: (1) To improve wheelchair motion control, an adaptive controller with online parameter estimation is developed for a differentially driven wheelchair. (2) Steering control scheme is designed that provides a unified framework integrating different types of low throughput human-machine interfaces with an obstacle avoidance mechanism. (3) A novel approach to the design of control systems with low throughput human-machine interfaces has been proposed. Based on the approach, position control scheme for a holonomic robot that aims to probabilistically minimize time to destination is developed and tested in simulation. The scheme is adopted for a real differentially driven wheelchair. In contrast to other methods, the proposed scheme allows to use prior information about the user habits, but does not restrict navigation to a set of pre-defined points, and parallelizes the inference and motion reducing the navigation time. (4) To enable the real time operation of the position control, a high-performance algorithm for single-source any-angle path planning on a grid has been developed. By abandoning the graph model and introducing discrete geometric primitives to represent the propagating wave front, we were able to design a planning algorithm that uses only integer addition and bit shifting. Experiments revealed a significant performance advantage. Several modifications, including optimal and multithreaded implementations, are also presented

    Despite the rapid development of medical technologies the health sector does not yet offer any universal remedy for people suffering from permanent impairment of motor functions. Individuals depending on the range of disability require rehabilitation and help to perform the ALDs (activities of daily living). To aid people affected by the impairment and relieve from some duties the ones responsible for helping them the electronic wheelchair was developed. One of the functions of the electronic wheelchair is supposed to be autonomous navigation with speech recognition. The main objective of this project was to extend the existing electronic wheelchair solution with all necessary equipment and software necessary to make the autonomous navigation possible. As a result, a versatile system was created capable of mapping the working space and navigating in both known and unknown dynamic environments. The system allows dynamic obstacle detection and avoidance, basic recovery behaviors and accepts navigation goals provided by speech recognition.A pesar del rápido desarrollo de las tecnologías médicas el sector de la salud todavía no ofrece ningún remedio universal para las personas sufriendo de falta de control motor. Dependiente del rango de discapacidad las personas requieren rehabilitación y ayuda para realizar AC (actividades cotidianas). Para ayudar a las personas afectadas por discapacidad y relevar de algunos deberes la gente que los soporta se desarrolló la silla de ruedas electrónica. Una de las funciones de ya mencionada silla de ruedas debería ser la navegación autónoma con reconocimiento de voz. Entonces el objetivo principal de este proyecto fue extender la solución existente con todo el hardware y software necesarios para que la navegación autónoma sea posible. El proyecto resultado en creación de un sistema versátil capaz de mapear el espacio de trabajo y navegar en entornos también conocidos y desconocidos. El sistema permite detección y evitación dinámica de obstáculos, soporta comportamientos básicos de recuperación y acepta objetivos de navegación proporcionados por el software de reconocimiento de voz

    Speech Recognition or Speech Recognizer (SR) has become an important tool for people with physical disabilities when handling Home Automation (HA) appliances. This technology is expected to improve the daily life of the elderly and the disabled so that they are always in control over their lives, and continue to live independently, to learn and stay involved in social life. The goal of the research is to solve the constraints of current Malay SR that is still in its infancy stage where there is limited research in Malay words, especially for HA applications. Since, most of the previous works were confined to wired microphone; this limitation of using wireless microphone type makes it an important area of the research. Research was carried out to develop SR word model for five (5) Malay words and five (5) English words as commands to activate and deactivate home appliances
