    The Trajectory of IT in Healthcare at HICSS: A Literature Review, Analysis, and Future Directions

    Research has extensively demonstrated that healthcare industry has rapidly implemented and adopted information technology in recent years. Research in health information technology (HIT), which represents a major component of the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, demonstrates similar findings. In this paper, review the literature to better understand the work on HIT that researchers have conducted in HICSS from 2008 to 2017. In doing so, we identify themes, methods, technology types, research populations, context, and emerged research gaps from the reviewed literature. With much change and development in the HIT field and varying levels of adoption, this review uncovers, catalogs, and analyzes the research in HIT at HICSS in this ten-year period and provides future directions for research in the field

    Making the Most of Slides and Lecture Captures for Better Performance: A Learning Analytics Case Study in Higher Education

    The provision of educational material in higher education takes place through learning management systems (LMS) and other learning platforms. However, little is known yet about how and when the students access the educational materials provided to perform better. In this paper, we aim to answer the research question: ‘How do the high achievers use the educational material provided to get better grades?’. To answer this question, the data from two educational platforms were merged: a LMS, and a lecture capture platform. We based our analysis on a series of quizzes to understand the differences between high and non high achievers regarding the use of lecture recordings and slides at different moments: (1) before and (2) while solving the quizzes, and (3) after their submission. Our analysis shows significant differences between both groups and highlights the value of considering all the educational platforms instead of limiting the analyses to a single data source

    Demand-oriented Competency Development in a Manufacturing Context: The Relevance of Process and Knowledge Modeling

    Competency management is a crucial success factor for organizations in the area of tension between knowledge management, human resource management, and process management, and has to be considered from a knowledge economy perspective. A basis for developing appropriate qualification measures in organizations is the comparison of necessary and available competencies. Given the time and cost intensity of the comparison process, the use of appropriate methods is of particular relevance for enterprises. This paper presents a procedural method and a software tool which enable resource-saving comparisons. Usually, employees’ “to competencies” are determined on a strategic level. Currently available “is competencies” can be derived from the actual knowledge transfer or from existing competence profiles. The method and tool first allow for the appropriate visualization of both competencies. After an automatized comparison of both contents, an overview of given and missing “to competencies” will be provided. Not available competencies can be addressed as qualification requirements and reflections regarding staffing or task allocation can be conducted

    Among Followers and Rebels: Professional Identity and Digitalization of Work

    The digitalization of work practices has changed the conditions for many professions. In this study, we explore the relation between professional identity and digitalization in the workplace. We join the research stream within professional identity research that views identity as a narrative construction, a story that individuals tell themselves and others to tell who they are, in this case in relation to digitalization. The empirical data derive from two different contexts: Nordic primary school teachers and European hoteliers at an international hotel chain. In total, 72 interviews were conducted. The study contributes to existing literature by providing increased knowledge on digitalization of work practices by illustrating different approaches to digitalization of work that extend over a specific profession. Theoretical contributions involve suggesting four ideal types of categorization to explain the approach to digitalization in professional life

    Towards explaining user satisfaction with contact tracing mobile applications in a time of pandemic: a text analytics approach

    This research project investigates the critical phenomenon of the post-adoption use of Contact Tracing Mobile Applications (CTMAs) in a time of pandemic. A panel data set of customer reviews was collected from March 2020 to June 2021. Using sentiment analysis, topic modeling and dictionary-based analytics, 10,337 reviews were analyzed. The results show that after controlling for review sentiment and length, user satisfaction is associated with users’ perception of utilitarian benefits of CTMA, their CTMA-specific privacy concerns, and installation and use issues. Our methodological approach (using various text analysis techniques for analyzing public feedback) and findings (influential factors on consumers’ satisfaction with CTMA) can inform the design and deployment of the next generation of CTMAs for managing future pandemics

    As maritime transport produces a large amount of data from various sources and in different formats, authors have analysed current applications of Big Data by researching global applications and experiences and by studying journal and conference articles. Big Data innovations in maritime transport (both cargo and passenger) are demonstrated, mainly in the fields of seaport operations, weather routing, monitoring/tracking and security. After the analysis, the authors have concluded that Big Data analyses can provide deep understanding of causalities and correlations in maritime transport, thus improving decision making. However, there exist major challenges of an efficient data collection and processing in maritime transport, such as technology challenges, challenges due to competitive conditions etc. Finally, the authors provide a future perspective of Big Data usage in maritime transport

    Virtual teamwork in the context of technological and cultural transformation

    Megatrends affect all individuals and organizations in our society. Mobility and flexibility are examples of megatrends that influence our everyday lives and also intensely alter the ways we work. The deployment of virtual teams meets the new chances emerging with these trends. Employees aspire to work virtually due to benefits, such as flexibility regarding the locations and hours for working. Organizations deploy virtual teams to remain competitive regarding new technological opportunities, employee retention and cost efficiency in an increasingly digital environment. Organizations can guide their change towards virtuality by building on the knowledge of practice as well as scientific insights regarding the deployment of virtual teams. In order to provide a holistic view on the structures and processes affected by such a change and thus provide guidance, a framework for analyzing and planning organizational change is adapted to virtual teamwork and presented in this paper. The framework shows that the deployment of virtual teams affects the whole organization. This comprehensive view on the implementation of virtual teamwork allows an integration of virtual teams and focusses on their performance. The adapted framework furthermore provides links for further in-depth research in this field
