    Minimum-weight triangulation is NP-hard

    A triangulation of a planar point set S is a maximal plane straight-line graph with vertex set S. In the minimum-weight triangulation (MWT) problem, we are looking for a triangulation of a given point set that minimizes the sum of the edge lengths. We prove that the decision version of this problem is NP-hard. We use a reduction from PLANAR-1-IN-3-SAT. The correct working of the gadgets is established with computer assistance, using dynamic programming on polygonal faces, as well as the beta-skeleton heuristic to certify that certain edges belong to the minimum-weight triangulation.Comment: 45 pages (including a technical appendix of 13 pages), 28 figures.     Exploiting parallelism within multidimensional multirate digital signal processing systems

    The intense requirements for high processing rates of multidimensional Digital Signal Processing systems in practical applications justify the Application Specific Integrated Circuits designs and parallel processing implementations. In this dissertation, we propose novel theories, methodologies and architectures in designing high-performance VLSI implementations for general multidimensional multirate Digital Signal Processing systems by exploiting the parallelism within those applications. To systematically exploit the parallelism within the multidimensional multirate DSP algorithms, we develop novel transformations including (1) nonlinear I/O data space transforms, (2) intercalation transforms, and (3) multidimensional multirate unfolding transforms. These transformations are applied to the algorithms leading to systematic methodologies in high-performance architectural designs. With the novel design methodologies, we develop several architectures with parallel and distributed processing features for implementing multidimensional multirate applications. Experimental results have shown that those architectures are much more efficient in terms of execution time and/or hardware cost compared with existing hardware implementations

    Approximate optimality with bounded regret in dynamic matching models

    We consider a discrete-time bipartite matching model with random arrivals of units of supply and demand that can wait in queues located at the nodes in the network. A control policy determines which are matched at each time. The focus is on the infinite-horizon average-cost optimal control problem. A relaxation of the stochastic control problem is proposed, which is found to be a special case of an inventory model, as treated in the classical theory of Clark and Scarf. The optimal policy for the relaxation admits a closed-form expression. Based on the policy for this relaxation, a new matching policy is proposed. For a parameterized family of models in which the network load approaches capacity, this policy is shown to be approximately optimal, with bounded regret, even though the average cost grows without bound

    Integer programming approaches for minimum stabbing problems

    The problem of finding structures with minimum stabbing number has received considerable attention from researchers. Particularly, [10] study the minimum stabbing number of perfect matchings (mspm), spanning trees (msst) and triangulations (mstr) associated to set of points in the plane. The complexity of the mstr remains open whilst the other two are known to be . This paper presents integer programming (ip) formulations for these three problems, that allowed us to solve them to optimality through ip branch-and-bound (b&b) or branch-and-cut (b&c) algorithms. Moreover, these models are the basis for the development of Lagrangian heuristics. Computational tests were conducted with instances taken from the literature where the performance of the Lagrangian heuristics were compared with that of the exact b&b and b&c algorithms. The results reveal that the Lagrangian heuristics yield solutions with minute, and often null, duality gaps for instances with several hundreds of points in small computation times.     Optimal area triangulation

    Given a set of points in the Euclidean plane, we are interested in its triangulations, i.e., the maximal sets of non-overlapping triangles with vertices in the given points whose union is the convex hull of the point set. With respect to the area of the triangles in a triangulation, several optimality criteria can be considered. We study two of them. The MaxMin area triangulation is the triangulation of the point set that maximizes the area of the smallest triangle in the triangulation. Similarly, the MinMax area triangulation is the triangulation that minimizes the area of the largest area triangle in the triangulation. In the case when the point set is in a convex position, we present algorithms that construct MaxMin and MinMax area triangulations of a convex polygon in O(n2logn)O(n^2log{n}) time and O(n2)O(n^2) space. These algorithms are based on dynamic programming. They use a number of geometric properties that are established within this work, and a variety of data structures specific to the problems. Further, we study polynomial time computable approximations to the optimal area triangulations of general point sets. We present geometric properties, based on angular constraints and perfect matchings, and use them to evaluate the approximation factor and to achieve triangulations with good practical quality compared to the optimal ones. These results open new direction in the research on optimal triangulations and set the stage for further investigations on optimization of area

    Nonnegative factorization and the maximum edge biclique problem

    Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is a data analysis technique based on the approximation of a nonnegative matrix with a product of two nonnegative factors, which allows compression and interpretation of nonnegative data. In this paper, we study the case of rank-one factorization and show that when the matrix to be factored is not required to be nonnegative, the corresponding problem (R1NF) becomes NP-hard. This sheds new light on the complexity of NMF since any algorithm for fixed-rank NMF must be able to solve at least implicitly such rank-one subproblems. Our proof relies on a reduction of the maximum edge biclique problem to R1NF. We also link stationary points of R1NF to feasible solutions of the biclique problem, which allows us to design a new type of biclique finding algorithm based on the application of a block-coordinate descent scheme to R1NF. We show that this algorithm, whose algorithmic complexity per iteration is proportional to the number of edges in the graph, is guaranteed to converge to a biclique and that it performs competitively with existing methods on random graphs and text mining datasets.nonnegative matrix factorization, rank-one factorization, maximum edge biclique problem, algorithmic complexity, biclique finding algorithm

    This thesis consists of five papers within the design and analysis of efficient algorithms.In the first paper, we consider the problem of computing all-pairs shortest paths in a directed graph with real weights assigned to vertices. We develop a combinatorial randomized algorithm that runs in subcubic time for a special class of graphs.In the second paper, we present a polynomial-time dynamic programming algorithm for optimal partitions of a complete edge-weighted graph, where the edges are weighted by the length of the unique shortest path connecting those vertices in the a priori given tree (shortest path metric induced by a tree). Our result resolves, in particular, the complexity status of the optimal partition problems in one-dimensional geometric (Euclidean) setting.In the third paper, we study the NP-hard problem of partitioning an orthogonal polyhedron P into a minimum number of 3D rectangles. We present an approximation algorithm with the approximation ratio 4 for the special case of the problem in which P is a so-called 3D histogram. We then apply it to compute the exact arithmetic matrix product of two matrices with non-negative integer entries. The computation is time-efficient if the 3D histograms induced by the input matrices can be partitioned into relatively few 3D rectangles.In the fourth paper, we present the first quasi-polynomial approximation schemes for the base of the number of triangulations of a planar point set and the base of the number of crossing-free spanning trees on a planar point set, respectively.In the fifth paper, we study the complexity of detecting monomials with special properties in the sum-product expansion of a polynomial represented by an arithmetic circuit of size polynomial in the number of input variables and using only multiplication and addition. We present a fixed-parameter tractable algorithms for the detection of monomial having at least k distinct variables, parametrized with respect to k. Furthermore, we derive several hardness results on the detection of monomials with such properties within exact, parametrized and approximation complexity
