Shoe-box orbit determination system for SMM preliminary results
The implementation of both sequential and batch methods of estimation on IMP-16 microprocessors was investigated. Simulated data was used from a tracking and data relay satellite whose target satellite was the Solar Maximum Mission. An interesting feature of the hardware was the use of two interconnected IMP-16's. Some preliminary results from the study, as well as the difficulties and advantages in the use of microprocessors, are presented
IMP Science Gateway: from the Portal to the Hub of Virtual Experimental Labs in Materials Science
"Science gateway" (SG) ideology means a user-friendly intuitive interface
between scientists (or scientific communities) and different software
components + various distributed computing infrastructures (DCIs) (like grids,
clouds, clusters), where researchers can focus on their scientific goals and
less on peculiarities of software/DCI. "IMP Science Gateway Portal"
(http://scigate.imp.kiev.ua) for complex workflow management and integration of
distributed computing resources (like clusters, service grids, desktop grids,
clouds) is presented. It is created on the basis of WS-PGRADE and gUSE
technologies, where WS-PGRADE is designed for science workflow operation and
gUSE - for smooth integration of available resources for parallel and
distributed computing in various heterogeneous distributed computing
infrastructures (DCI). The typical scientific workflows with possible scenarios
of its preparation and usage are presented. Several typical use cases for these
science applications (scientific workflows) are considered for molecular
dynamics (MD) simulations of complex behavior of various nanostructures
(nanoindentation of graphene layers, defect system relaxation in metal
nanocrystals, thermal stability of boron nitride nanotubes, etc.). The user
experience is analyzed in the context of its practical applications for MD
simulations in materials science, physics and nanotechnologies with available
heterogeneous DCIs. In conclusion, the "science gateway" approach - workflow
manager (like WS-PGRADE) + DCI resources manager (like gUSE)- gives opportunity
to use the SG portal (like "IMP Science Gateway Portal") in a very promising
way, namely, as a hub of various virtual experimental labs (different software
components + various requirements to resources) in the context of its practical
MD applications in materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, and
nanotechnologies.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables; 6th International Workshop on Science

The Common HOL Platform
The Common HOL project aims to facilitate porting source code and proofs
between members of the HOL family of theorem provers. At the heart of the
project is the Common HOL Platform, which defines a standard HOL theory and API
that aims to be compatible with all HOL systems. So far, HOL Light and hol90
have been adapted for conformance, and HOL Zero was originally developed to
conform. In this paper we provide motivation for a platform, give an overview
of the Common HOL Platform's theory and API components, and show how to adapt
legacy systems. We also report on the platform's successful application in the
hand-translation of a few thousand lines of source code from HOL Light to HOL
Zero.Comment: In Proceedings PxTP 2015, arXiv:1507.0837
The space science data service: A study of its efficiencies and costs
Factors affecting the overall advantages and disadvantages of a centralized facility for both the data base and processing capability for NASA's Office of Space Science programs are examined in an effort to determine the best approach to data management in the light of the increasing number of data bits collected annually. Selected issues considered relate to software and storage savings, security precautions, and the phase-in plan. Information on the current mode of processing and on the potential impact of changes resulting from a conversion to a space science data base service was obtained from five user groups and is presented as an aid in determining the dollar benefits and advantages of a centralized system

Generation of an expandable intermediate mesoderm restricted progenitor cell line from human pluripotent stem cells.
The field of tissue engineering entered a new era with the development of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), which are capable of unlimited expansion whilst retaining the potential to differentiate into all mature cell populations. However, these cells harbor significant risks, including tumor formation upon transplantation. One way to mitigate this risk is to develop expandable progenitor cell populations with restricted differentiation potential. Here, we used a cellular microarray technology to identify a defined and optimized culture condition that supports the derivation and propagation of a cell population with mesodermal properties. This cell population, referred to as intermediate mesodermal progenitor (IMP) cells, is capable of unlimited expansion, lacks tumor formation potential, and, upon appropriate stimulation, readily acquires properties of a sub-population of kidney cells. Interestingly, IMP cells fail to differentiate into other mesodermally-derived tissues, including blood and heart, suggesting that these cells are restricted to an intermediate mesodermal fate
Carrier Transport in High Mobility InAs Nanowire Junctionless Transistors
Ability to understand and model the performance limits of nanowire
transistors is the key to design of next generation devices. Here, we report
studies on high-mobility junction-less gate-all-around nanowire field effect
transistor with carrier mobility reaching 2000 cm2/V.s at room temperature.
Temperature-dependent transport measurements reveal activated transport at low
temperatures due to surface donors, while at room temperature the transport
shows a diffusive behavior. From the conductivity data, the extracted value of
sound velocity in InAs nanowires is found to be an order less than the bulk.
This low sound velocity is attributed to the extended crystal defects that
ubiquitously appear in these nanowires. Analyzing the temperature-dependent
mobility data, we identify the key scattering mechanisms limiting the carrier
transport in these nanowires. Finally, using these scattering models, we
perform drift-diffusion based transport simulations of a nanowire field-effect
transistor and compare the device performances with experimental measurements.
Our device modeling provides insight into performance limits of InAs nanowire
transistors and can be used as a predictive methodology for nanowire-based
integrated circuits.Comment: 22 pages, 5 Figures, Nano Letter
Corotating pressure waves without streams in the solar wind
Voyager 1 and 2 magnetic field and plasma data are presented which demonstrate the existence of large scale, corotating, non-linear pressure waves between 2 AU and 4 AU that are not accompanied by fast streams. The pressure waves are presumed to be generated by corotating streams near the Sun. For two of the three pressure waves that are discussed, the absence of a stream is probably a real, physical effect, viz., a consequence of deceleration of the stream by the associated compression wave. For the third pressure wave, the apparent absence of a stream may be a geometrical effect; it is likely that the stream was at latitudes just above those of the spacecraft, while the associated shocks and compression wave extended over a broader range of latitudes so that they could be observed by the spacecraft. It is suggested that the development of large-scale non-linear pressure waves at the expense of the kinetic energy of streams produces a qualitative change in the solar wind in the outer heliosphere. Within a few AU the quasi-stationary solar wind structure is determined by corotating streams whose structure is determined by the boundary conditions near the Sun
