    Impact of generalized travel costs on satellite location in two-echelon vehicle routing problem

    In this paper we address the Two-Echelon Vehicle Routing Problem (2E-VRP), the variant of VRP where freight is delivered from depots to intermediate satellites, and then it is delivered to customers while minimizing the global routing costs of the overall two-echelon network. The goal of this work is to address more realistic situations in urban freight delivery where the travel costs are not only given by distances, but also by other components, like fixed costs for using the arcs, operational costs, and environmental costs. We introduce a generalized travel cost that may combine different components, e.g., operational, environmental, congestion, etc. We then analyze how the different components of the generalized cost affect the satellite location in the 2E-VRP and whether and under which conditions the Two-Echelon approach dominates the Single-Echelon on

    Multi-start heuristics for the Two-Echelon Vehicle Routing Problem

    In this paper we address the Two-Echelon Vehicle Routing Problem (2E-VRP), an extension of the classical Capacitated VRP, where the delivery from a single depot to the customers is managed by routing and consolidating the freight through intermediate depots called satellites. We present a family of Multi-Start heuristics based on separating the depot-to-satellite transfer and the satellite-to-customer delivery by iteratively solving the two resulting routing subproblems, while adjusting the satellite workloads that link them. The common scheme on which all the heuristics are based consists in, after having found an initial solution, applying a local search phase, followed by a diversification; if the new obtained solutions are feasible, then local search is applied again, otherwise a feasibility search procedure is applied, and if it successful, the local search is applied on the newfound solution. Different diversification strategies and feasibility search rules are proposed. We present computational results on a wide set of instances up to 50 customers and 5 satellites and compare them with results from the literature, showing how the new methods outperform previous existent methods, both in efficiency and accurac

    In the last decades , the increasing quality of services requested by the cust omer, yields to the necessity of optimizing the whole distribution process. This goal may be achieved through a smart exploitation of existing resources other than a clever planning of the whole distribution process.     In the efficient management of the supply chain the optimal management of transport of consumables and finished products appears. The costs associated with transport have direct impact on the final value consumers must pay, which in addition to requiring competitive products also demand that they are generated in environmentally friendly organizations. Aware of this reality, this document is intended to be a starting point for Master's and Doctoral degree students who want to work in a line of research recently proposed: green routing. The state of the art of the vehicle routing problem is presented in this paper, listing its variants, models and methodologies for solution. Furthermore, the proposed interaction between variants of classical routing problems and environmental effects of its operations, known in the literature as Green-VRP is presented. The goal is to generate a discussion in which mathematical models and solution strategies that can be applied within organizations that consider within their objectives an efficient and sustainable operation are posed. En el gerenciamiento eficiente de la cadena de suministro aparece la gesti贸n 贸ptima del transporte de insumos y productos terminados. Los costos asociados al transporte tienen impacto directo sobre el valor final que deben pagar los consumidores, que adem谩s de requerir productos competitivos tambi茅n exigen que los mismos sean generados en organizaciones amigables con el medioambiente. Consientes de esa realidad este documento pretende ser un punto de partida para estudiantes de maestr铆a y doctorado que quieran trabajar en una l铆nea de investigaci贸n propuesta recientemente: el ruteo verde. En este trabajo se muestra un estado del arte del problema de ruteo de veh铆culos, enumerando sus variantes, modelos y metodolog铆as de soluci贸n. Adem谩s, se presenta la interacci贸n que se ha propuesto entre variantes cl谩sicas de los problemas de ruteo y los efectos ambientales de su operaci贸n, denominados en la literatura como Green-VRP. El objetivo es generar una discusi贸n donde se planteen modelos matem谩ticos y estrategias de soluci贸n que puedan ser aplicadas en organizaciones que consideren dentro de sus objetivos una operaci贸n eficiente y sustentable.     A large neighbourhood based heuristic for two-echelon routing problems

    In this paper, we address two optimisation problems arising in the context of city logistics and two-level transportation systems. The two-echelon vehicle routing problem and the two-echelon location routing problem seek to produce vehicle itineraries to deliver goods to customers, with transits through intermediate facilities. To efficiently solve these problems, we propose a hybrid metaheuristic which combines enumerative local searches with destroy-and-repair principles, as well as some tailored operators to optimise the selections of intermediate facilities. We conduct extensive computational experiments to investigate the contribution of these operators to the search performance, and measure the performance of the method on both problem classes. The proposed algorithm finds the current best known solutions, or better ones, for 95% of the two-echelon vehicle routing problem benchmark instances. Overall, for both problems, it achieves high-quality solutions within short computing times. Finally, for future reference, we resolve inconsistencies between different versions of benchmark instances, document their differences, and provide them all online in a unified format
